Help! Mom struggling with ID.me for NY unemployment - any alternatives?
My mom got laid off from her administrative job in November and filed for unemployment benefits in early December. Everything was going smoothly until last week when she received an email saying she needs to verify her identity through ID.me before her payments can continue. The problem is she's 68 years old and really struggling with the technology. She doesn't have a smartphone with a good camera for the selfie verification, and she can't find her original social security card (only has a photocopy). She tried using her passport but it expired 8 months ago. I've been trying to help her remotely since I live in another state. We've been on the phone for hours trying to figure this out, and she's getting really stressed because her rent is due next week. Has anyone found a way around using ID.me? Or know if there's a phone number where she can verify her identity with a real person? This whole system seems designed to prevent older people from getting their benefits.

u gotta do the ID.me thing. theres no way around it. my uncle had same problem, hes 72 and not tech savvy at all. i had to drive over to his house and help him. took like 3 attempts but we got it done.

Thanks for the reply. Wish I could go to her place but I'm literally across the country 😓 Did your uncle have all the required documents?

thats the thing that pisses me off. why do old ppl need to jump thru these hoops? they should have an alternative for seniors!

I was in a similar situation last month but found a solution that worked! I was stuck in an endless loop with ID.me and getting desperate. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected directly to an agent who helped me verify my identity over the phone instead. Talking to a real person got my benefits unlocked in like 48 hours. They have a YouTube video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real? Sounds too good to be true tbh. How does it actually work?

Yeah its real! Basically they have this system that keeps calling the unemployment office until they get through, then they connect the call to your phone. I tried calling myself for DAYS with no luck before using this.

hmm another 'solution' that probably takes ur $$$ and gives nothing back 🙄 seen too many of these unemployment 'services'

No actually it worked! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after weeks of no benefits. Its a legit service - they just do the waiting on hold part for you. The agent I talked to helped me bypass the ID.me thing completely.

yo I actually used this too when my claim got frozen. saved me from having another mental breakdown after being on hold for 5 hours lmao

Try this trick that worked for me: When you start the ID.me process, select the option for a video call verification instead of uploading docs. You'll wait a bit but get a real person who can be more flexible about what ID they'll accept. My mom used an expired license + medicare card and they approved it.

ID.me is THE WORST!!! 🤬 i spent 3 weeks trying to get verified and almost lost my apartment. the whole system is designed to make people give up. tried calling the ny unemployment office 47 times (yes i counted) and couldnt get thru to a human.

Same. I think that's literally their strategy... make it so complicated that people just stop trying to claim benefits. Saves the state money.

For anyone struggling with verification issues or other unemployment problems, here's what worked for me: First, don't give up! The system is frustrating by design, but persistence pays off. If your mom is having trouble with ID.me specifically: 1) Try the video chat option instead of document upload - they're more flexible 2) Ask about alternative document combinations (utility bill + birth certificate sometimes works) 3) For seniors, mention accessibility issues directly during verification 4) If all else fails, contact your state representative's office - they can intervene What finally worked for me after 3 weeks of hell was using claimyr.com to get a direct line to an agent. They called and stayed on hold for me, then connected me when a live person answered. The agent was able to note special circumstances in my file and provide alternative verification methods. The unemployment system isn't designed for edge cases or people with limited tech access, but there are workarounds if you're persistent!

This is really helpful advice, thanks for sharing! Did you need to provide any personal info to that claimyr service?

Nope! They just need your phone number to connect the call to you when they get through to an agent. They don't ask for any of your unemployment info or anything like that.

ur mom can go to the public library! most libraries have staff that help seniors with tech stuff. my grandma did her ID.me there and the librarian helped her through the whole process. they have computers and webcams you can use.

That's actually a great idea I hadn't thought of! Will definitely suggest this to her. Thanks!

Does she have a birth certificate? I was able to use that + utility bill when my wallet was stolen. They made me do a video call verification but it worked eventually.

She does have her birth certificate! Did you have to schedule the video call in advance or was it immediate?

had to schedule it and wait about 2 days. but once i got on the call it only took like 15 mins to verify. way better than trying to upload pics that kept getting rejected

bro the whole ID.me thing is a scam to collect our biometric data. wake up sheeple!! 👀 they just want your face scan in their database

Tell her to cal the ny unemployment senior helpline directly at 888-209-8124 and press 3 when it asks for why ur calling. sometimes they have special exemptions for seniors who struggle with the digital verification.

My aunt is 73 and went through this last month! We ended up calling her state representative's office and they helped push her case through without having to do the full ID.me process. Worth a shot!

After failing ID.me verification 4 times I got so mad I wrote an actual letter (yes with paper and stamp lol) to the head of NYSDOL explaining my situation. Shockingly, I got a call 2 weeks later from someone who helped me verify over the phone. Maybe worth trying?

check if there's a workforce center near her. they sometimes have staff who can help with id verification issues.

I'll look into this. Anyone know if these centers typically require appointments or can you just walk in?

The system is rigged against older people and it's disgusting. My dad went through this in February. What finally worked was going to our local state assembly person's office. They have special contacts at unemployment and got his issue resolved in like 3 days.

She does! I didn't realize that could work as ID. Will definitely have her try that, thanks!
