NY unemployment ID.me verification keeps rejecting me - what am I doing wrong?
So frustrated right now. Been trying to recertify for my unemployment benefits for the past 2 weeks but keep hitting a wall with the ID.me verification process. Every single time I submit my information, I get this message saying they can't confirm my identity. I've triple-checked that I'm entering everything correctly - my driver's license, social security number, address, everything matches my official documents. I've tried using different devices, different browsers, even tried at different times of day thinking maybe their system is overloaded. Nothing works! I've got bills piling up and need this money asap. Has anyone else dealt with this? What fixed it for you? This whole system feels designed to prevent people from actually getting their benefits.

This happened to me too! The EXACT same problem. I was losing my mind trying to figure it out. Turns out my license had expired by like 2 weeks and I hadn't even noticed! Double check all your documents are current. Also make sure your selfie is in good lighting with no glasses, hat, etc.

•Thanks for the suggestion! Just checked and my license is valid till next year, so that's not it. My selfies are clear too - no glasses or anything blocking my face. Still getting rejected 😫

•Sometimes the camera quality matters too. I had to use my bf's phone instead of mine cuz the resolution was better. Made a difference!

•Yeah u might need to try a different camera. Also make sure your address on everything matches EXACTLY. Like if your license says "Street" but you type "St." - that can mess it up too.

After being stuck with this same issue for almost a month, I finally found a solution! I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human at unemployment. They helped me bypass the ID.me issues and got my account verified over the phone. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast - it's literally the only way I could resolve this. Check out this video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•sounds like one of those fake solutions that never actually work... did this actually help or are u just promoting something? 🤔

•Nah, I get the skepticism for real. I was desperate after 3 weeks of trying everything else. It actually connected me to a real agent who manually verified my identity. Only reason I posted is cuz I know how frustrating this is.

•wait so what exactly does this service do? how does it work? i've been stuck in verification hell for weeks

•It basically calls unemployment for you, stays on hold (mine was like 3+ hours), then calls your phone when they get a real person. Then you just explain your problem to the agent. For me they were able to manually verify my account.

•another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol... but honestly at this point I'm desperate enough to try anything 😩

•I was exactly where you are! Totally get it. But this actually worked - the key was getting to talk to a real person who could override the system.

The ID.me system is GARBAGE. I work in IT and I can tell you its poorly designed. My suggestion is to try doing the live video verification option instead of the automated one. There should be a link that says something like "verify with an agent" after a few failed attempts.

•I've tried the video verification twice now. First time I waited 3 hours in queue and then got disconnected. Second time the agent said my documents looked fine but still couldn't verify me and told me to "try again later" 🤬

•that suuucks. sounds like a deeper issue with your account then. might need to contact unemployment directly to have them reset something on their end.

•THIS 100%. I've built identity verification systems professionally and ID.me is honestly embarassing. Bad UX, poor error handling, and the matching algorithms are WAY too strict.

Try using a different email address and start the whole process from scratch. That worked for me. For some reason my original email got flagged in their system or something.

Bro I swear the NY unemployment system is DESIGNED to make us give up. It's not a bug, it's a feature 🤡 They make the process so painful hoping people will just stop trying. I had the same issue and ended up having to mail in physical copies of my documents to their office in Albany. Took forever but finally got verified.

•This is the truth! My cousin works for the state (not unemployment but another agency) and she says they deliberately make it difficult so fewer people complete the process. Saves them $$$

•Wait, mailing in documents actually worked?? Did you just send copies of your ID and SS card? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

Jacob Smithson
•Yeah I sent notarized copies of my license, birth certificate, SS card, and a utility bill. Put my claim # on everything. Took like 3 weeks but they eventually processed it. Better than nothing I guess 🤷♂️

Check if your name on your SS card and ID match EXACTLY. My middle name was spelled out on one and just an initial on the other, and that was enough to cause problems with their system. Also, sometimes their system has issues with certain characters in addresses like # or Apt. Try simplifying your address if possible.

Mateo Rodriguez
•Good point! Just double-checked and my name is identical on both documents. I do have an apartment number though... maybe that's causing issues?

Maya Patel
•Definitely could be! Try submitting without the apartment number if possible or format it differently (Unit vs Apt). Their system is super picky about stuff like that.

Here's a comprehensive guide to resolving ID.me verification issues with NY unemployment: First, understand that ID.me and NYSDOL are separate systems that talk to each other, which creates complications. Try these steps in order: 1) Clear your cookies/cache or use a different browser entirely 2) If you have any special characters in your name (hyphens, apostrophes), try removing them 3) Make sure your smartphone camera is high quality for the selfie 4) For address verification, use EXACTLY what appears on your license/ID 5) If it still fails, request the video verification option 6) If video verification fails, you need to contact NYSDOL directly I've personally helped dozens of people with this issue, and often the fastest solution is actually using claimyr.com to get connected to a live agent who can override the verification process manually. Once you get someone on the phone, explain that ID.me keeps rejecting you despite accurate information, and they can usually verify you on the spot. Don't give up - this is frustrating but solvable!

•Thank you for such a detailed response! I've tried most of these already but will definitely try clearing cache and cookies - didn't think of that. If that doesn't work I might try that claimyr service, getting desperate here.

•I can vouch for this approach. The clearing cache thing fixed it for me - apparently ID.me stores some kind of cookie that can get corrupted.

have u tried contacting ID.me directly? they have their own customer service that's separate from unemployment. a friend of mine had his identity confirmed through their support team when the automated system wouldn't work.

•I tried emailing them twice and got generic automated responses both times. Is there a direct phone number that actually works?

Ava Kim
•Yeah their email support is useless. Try 866-775-4363 and select the option for 'government services' not the general help. Worked better for me.

Did you legally change your name at any point? I had this same issue because I got married and changed my last name. Even though I updated my license, there was a mismatch with some background database they use. Had to upload my marriage certificate to get it fixed.

Could be a credit history issue. ID.me sometimes pulls info from credit bureaus to verify identity. If you have a limited credit history, recently moved, or have a credit freeze, it can cause verification to fail. Try checking if you have a credit freeze and temporarily lift it.

•Ohhh that's interesting! I did freeze my credit last year after a data breach. I'll try lifting the freeze and see if that helps. Thanks for the tip!

•This is exactly what happened to me! Lifted my Experian freeze and suddenly ID.me worked. So dumb that they don't tell you this is the problem.

Try calling the ny unemployment fraud department directly at (888) 598-2077. They actually answer phones faster than regular unemployment and can help with ID verification issues since those are often categorized as potential fraud cases. Explain your situation calmly and they might be able to override the ID.me requirement.

•Don't waste your time with this number. I tried it last week and was on hold for 2.5 hours only to be told they couldn't help with ID.me issues anymore. They changed their policy apparently.

I swear ID.me is the worst thing to happen to unemployment systems. Every state that uses it has these problems. In my case, I had to use my passport instead of my driver's license to finally get verified. Do you have alternate forms of ID you could try?
0 coins
Mateo Rodriguez
•I do have a passport! It's expired though, would that still work? And where in the process can I select passport instead of license? I don't recall seeing that option.

Chloe Boulanger
•When you start the verification process, there should be a dropdown or option to select which primary ID you want to use. And yes, even an expired passport might work better than a license that's getting rejected. Worth a shot!

•actually they won't accept an expired passport - has to be valid. tried that route myself :/

try contacting your state representative or assemblyperson! sounds crazy but they can actually help with unemployment issues. i was stuck with verification problems for months, called my assembly member's office, and they had it fixed in 2 days. they have special contacts at nysdol.

I went through this exact nightmare last month! After weeks of failed attempts, here's what finally worked for me: 1) Make sure you're using the EXACT same name format across all documents (including middle initial vs full middle name), 2) Take your selfie in natural daylight near a window - the lighting makes a huge difference, 3) If you have any old addresses associated with your credit report, ID.me might be pulling those for verification questions. I had to temporarily lift my credit freeze like someone mentioned above, and that was the key! Also try using a different device entirely - sometimes their system gets glitchy with certain browsers/phones. Don't give up, it's incredibly frustrating but there IS a solution that will work for your specific situation.

•Thank you so much for sharing what worked! I'm definitely going to try the natural lighting tip - I've been taking my selfies indoors with artificial lighting. And you're right about the credit freeze thing, I think that might be my issue too. Quick question - when you lifted your credit freeze, did you have to lift it with all three bureaus or just one? Want to make sure I do this right!
