Where's my refund? DD date 5/14 with Capital One but nothing yet

Filed my taxes early April, accepted the same day. WMR updated to approved on May 8th and showed direct deposit date of 5/14 to my Capital One account. It's now May 17th and still no deposit! My transcript shows code 846 with the 5/14 date but the money isn't in my account. Called Capital One and they said they don't see any pending deposits. Anyone else with Capital One experiencing delays? Has anyone successfully received their refund with them recently? Starting to get worried as I really need this refund for some bills coming up.

Anna Stewart

Tax professional here. This is actually pretty common, especially with the IRS being backed up this year. The 846 code with a date means the IRS has scheduled your refund, but there can be delays in the actual transfer to your bank. A few things to consider: • The IRS date is when they send it, not necessarily when Capital One receives it • Some banks hold tax refunds for 1-5 business days for verification • Capital One specifically has been having some processing delays this season • If it's been more than 5 business days since your DD date, you should call the IRS directly Given that today is only 3 business days after your scheduled date, I'd wait until at least Monday before panicking. If nothing by Tuesday, definitely call the IRS at 800-829-1040 (though good luck getting through).

Thank you! This is helpful. I didnt realize they might hold it for verification. I'll give it til Tuesday then try calling if nothing shows up.

Ive been calling that number for 2 weeks and can never get through. Just endless holds and then disconnects 😤

Yeah the IRS phone lines are a nightmare. If you need to actually reach someone, there's a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you skip the wait. Saved me hours of frustration when I had a client with a similar issue.

I used that service last month when I was desperate to talk to someone about my amended return. They got me connected to an agent in like 20 minutes after I spent DAYS trying on my own. Worth every penny since I finally got my issue resolved.

Instead of going crazy trying to piece together what's happening with your refund, I just started using taxr.ai and it's been a lifesaver! It analyzed my transcript and explained every code, gave me an accurate timeline, and told me exactly why my refund was delayed. So much better than posting here and getting random guesses. For your situation, it would tell you exactly what's happening with that 846 code and if there are any holds or issues. I was in the same boat last month and taxr.ai gave me peace of mind because I finally understood what was happening with my money. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does wayyyyy more than just read the transcript. It actually interprets all the codes and dates together, explains what each one means specifically for YOUR situation, tells you if there are any issues or holds, and gives you a projected timeline. I was able to see exactly why my refund was delayed and when I'd likely get it. The accuracy was scary good - got my deposit literally on the day it predicted. Honestly everyone dealing with tax issues should be using this.

Not a miracle, just technology that actually works lol. Believe what you want, but I wasted weeks trying to figure out my transcript by googling codes and getting nowhere. This thing explained everything in minutes and was 100% accurate about my timeline and issues.

I was in your exact situation with Capital One last month! DD date was 4/22, nothing showed up until 4/26. Their customer service kept saying they didn't see anything pending, then boom - just appeared one morning. Capital One seems to be especially slow with tax refunds this year. Hang tight, it's probably on the way!

That makes me feel better! Did you have to call them or it just randomly showed up?

It just showed up randomly! I called them twice and both times they said they didnt see anything coming. Then I woke up Thursday morning and there it was. Their system is weird with government payments.

I went through the exact same thing, except it was my third return that got stuck. After trying to call the IRS for days and getting nowhere, I finally used this calling service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback with an actual agent. Found out my refund was held due to a verification issue they never notified me about! The agent released it on the spot and I got my deposit 2 days later. Talking to a real human at the IRS was the only thing that worked - wish I'd done it sooner instead of just waiting.

is that service actually real? sounds too good to be true

100% real. I was super skeptical too but was desperate after trying for literally weeks to get through. The IRS agent even fixed my issue during that call. Best money I've spent all year considering I was waiting on a $3400 refund.

Honestly whatever they charge is worth it. I spent hours upon hours trying to call myself and never got through. This got me talking to someone who could actually help in like 20 minutes. My refund was just sitting there waiting for a human to look at it.

sometimes capital one holds federal deposits for a review. happened to me last year. it showed up on day 5. so annoying but hang in there

The IRS is such a joke. They expect us to pay on time but take their sweet time sending refunds. I've been waiting since FEBRUARY for mine. 3 months for my own money back lol. And you cant even get someone on the phone 🤡

Honestly, I used to feel this way too until I actually got through to someone at the IRS using Claimyr (claimyr.com). The agent explained that their systems are from the 1960s and they're understaffed by like 30%. Still annoying but at least I understood why things were taking so long.

Check the routing number on your transcript. I had the exact same issue and turns out the last digit of my routing number was wrong. Had to call the IRS (which was a nightmare) to get it fixed.

How do I see the routing number on my transcript? I don't see it anywhere.

You cant see it on the transcript directly. You would need to call the IRS to confirm. But double check what you entered on your return first if you still have a copy.

Dont panic! I have Cap One too and it took 8 days after my DD date this year. Last year it was right on time. Something weird going on with them in 2025.

After endless frustration with a similar issue, I finally broke down and tried taxr.ai - complete game changer. Uploaded my transcript and it immediately identified why my refund was held up (some obscure code I'd never have figured out). Saved me hours of research and worry. Might be worth a shot in your case too to see if there's something else going on with your refund that isn't obvious from just the 846 code. https://taxr.ai

Literally in the same boat with Capital One right now. DD date of 5/10 and still nothing. Called them 3 times and they just say "we don't see anything pending" every time. This is so frustrating. Please update if yours comes through!

Have you checked if there's actually a problem with your return? Sometimes the WMR tool shows a deposit date but your transcript might have other codes that indicate issues. Worth checking if there's a 570 or 971 code that might be holding things up.

-

Kai Rivera

I don't see any other codes on my transcript besides the 846. That's why I'm confused.

Ive been trying to get answers about my refund for months. Finally used a service called Claimyr that got me on the phone with an IRS agent in under 30 minutes after I had spent WEEKS calling on my own and never getting through. The agent was able to see my full file and fix the hold that was on my account instantly. They released my refund right then and there. If you're desperate to know whats going on, thats your best bet. Check out claimyr.com - absolute lifesaver.

No - they just connect you with the IRS. You still talk directly to the IRS yourself. They just handle the nightmare of getting through their phone system. Once you're connected, it's just you and the IRS agent.

sometimes the problem is with the banking info you provided on your return. check that it matches exactly whats on your bank acct. Ive seen ppl put the account # wrong by one digit and the money gets sent back to IRS.

Call the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help when refunds are stuck like this. Number is 877-777-4778. Better than the regular IRS number.

Taxpayer advocate is even harder to reach these days. They're so backed up they're only taking "hardship" cases now.
