"WMR status changed to 'processing delayed beyond normal timeframe' after ID verification - still in 'Received' stage with Tax Topic 152"

I verified my identity at the IRS office on 3/15 and my Where's My Refund status has finally changed today. Now it says 'We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe.' It also mentions Tax Topic 152. When I check my IRS2Go Refund Status app, I can see that my return is still in the "Received" stage - it hasn't moved to "Approved" or "Sent" yet. The full message states: "We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe. You can continue to check back here for the most up to date information regarding your refund. We understand your tax refund is very important and we are working to process your return as quickly as possible." Below that, it says "Please read the following information related to your tax situation: Tax Topic 152, Refund Information" and "Please Note: For refund information, please continue to check here, or visit the Refunds page on IRS.gov. Updates to refund status are made no more than once a day." I filed as Married-Filing Joint status, and my transcripts are still completely blank though. Has anyone experienced this? How long after this message should I expect to see my transcripts update? Feeling like I'm making some progress but still waiting...

This is actually progress! When you see the 'delayed beyond normal timeframe' message with Tax Topic 152, it means your return has passed the identity verification stage and is now in processing. The blank transcripts are normal at this point. Typically, you'll see transcript updates within 1-3 weeks after this status change. The cycle depends on which processing center has your return. Many people see updates on Fridays when the IRS does their weekly processing. The fact that you verified in person is good - that usually speeds things up compared to other verification methods. Keep checking your transcripts weekly rather than daily - this will save you some frustration. Once you see a 570 or 971 code appear, that means action is happening.

Thank you so much! That's a huge relief. I'll try to be patient and check weekly instead of obsessively every day 😅

0 coins

what day of the week did you see your WMR update? just wondering if theres a pattern

0 coins

It updated on Tuesday morning. I had been checking every day around 7am.

0 coins

Mine updated on a thursday, so I don't think theirs a specific pattern. Just seems random tbh

I've been through this exact situation and was pulling my hair out trying to understand what was going on with my refund. I tried calling the IRS multiple times but couldn't get through. Then I found this tool called taxr.ai that analyzed my transcript and explained EXACTLY what was happening with my return. It predicted when I'd get my money and was spot on. Saved me so much time compared to trying to figure out all the codes and dates myself. Wish I'd found it sooner! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does way more than just read it! It connects all the cycles, dates and codes and gives a timeline of what happened with your return and what will happen next. It even told me why my return was delayed and when it would be fixed. Honestly life changing after weeks of stress and confusion!

0 coins

OMG I just tried it and I'm blown away!!! It literally explained EVERYTHING that's been happening with my refund. No more trying to google random codes at 2am. Best tax tool I've ever used by far. Thanks for sharing this! 🙌

another app? is this just selling our data to scammers or what

0 coins

No selling data! It just reads what's already on your transcript and makes sense of it. You can use it without creating an account if you're concerned.

After sitting in the same boat for weeks with that exact message, I finally found a way to get through to an actual IRS agent using claimyr.com. Got a callback in about 15 minutes and the agent told me exactly what was going on with my return. Turns out there was a small error they needed to fix. Once I talked to someone, my refund was processed within days. Talking to a live person made all the difference after waiting for months with no movement!

0 coins

Does that actually work? I've been trying to call for weeks and just get the stupid automated message saying they're too busy

0 coins

Yeah it works! I was skeptical too but was desperate. It's worth every penny when you're waiting on thousands in refund money. The agent had access to details that never showed up on WMR or my transcript.

0 coins

how much does it cost tho?

0 coins

I don't remember the exact amount but it was the best money I've spent all year considering I was waiting on a $5k refund. Getting answers immediately instead of waiting another month was totally worth it.

0 coins

Are u still checking the same SSN u filed with? This happened to me and I realized I was entering my wifes SSN instead of mine (we filed jointly). Once I switched to my SSN I saw my transcript right away.

0 coins

mine did this in February and my transcripts updated 9 days later. Then I got my refund about a week after the transcripts showed a DDD. Hang in there!

0 coins

That's encouraging! Did you have to verify identity too or was yours a different issue?

0 coins

Yep had to verify in person at a taxpayer assistance center. Once that was done things moved along pretty quick.

0 coins

The IRS is a joke this year! 🤡 I've been waiting since January with the exact same message. My transcripts finally updated last week but with a 570 code which means they're still holding my refund. This is absolutely ridiculous when people need their money.

0 coins

I feel you. This is my money and they act like they're doing me a favor by returning it. Meanwhile I'm behind on bills waiting for this refund 😤

0 coins

570 code isn't necessarily bad. I had that and then a 571 a week later which released the hold. Check again tomorrow, Friday updates are common

0 coins

I filed in January, verified in February, and got the same message you're seeing. My transcripts updated about 3 weeks later, and I received my refund the first week of April. From what I've read on this forum, most people see transcript updates within 2-4 weeks after getting that message. The IRS is super backlogged this year.

0 coins

If your transcript is blank, that means they haven't even processed your return yet. that message is just a generic message they use when theirs a delay. Could be weeks or months b4 any updates tbh.

0 coins

Months?? That's so frustrating. I filed in January... it's already been so long 😫

0 coins

Not trying to be negative, just realistic. Last year I waited 5 months. Hope yours is faster!

0 coins

Anyone else notice that in person verification seems to get processed faster than the online verification? I had to go into the office too and my stuff moved pretty quick after that.

0 coins

100% this! My brother did online verification and waited 8 weeks. I did in-person and only waited 2 weeks after for movement.

0 coins

I think its bcause when u go in person they can fix any issues right then and there instead of putting u back in the queue

0 coins

Which cycle date did u file on? If u filed early, the delay is probably because of the PATH Act which means if you claimed EITC or ACTC they hold your refund until at least mid-Feb. Those credits need extra verification.

0 coins

I filed January 28th. No EITC or ACTC though, just standard deduction. That's why this whole delay has been confusing.

0 coins

i ended up having to contact my congressman's office after being stuck in that status for 2 months. a week after i opened a case with them my transcript updated and i got my refund. might be worth trying if yours sits for more than a month with no movement.

0 coins

Check your transcripts first thing Friday morning. Thats when they do massive updates to the system. Most ppl in ur situation see movement on Fridays around 6am Eastern time.

0 coins

Thanks for the tip! Will definitely check Friday morning.

0 coins

I had this EXACT scenario, in-person verification and all! I downloaded this transcript reading tool called taxr.ai that told me exactly what was happening with my return and when to expect my refund. Saved me from calling the IRS 50 times and stressing for weeks. It even showed me that my refund had a small adjustment I didn't know about. https://taxr.ai

0 coins

Another taxr shill? Is this some kind of guerilla marketing campaign or does this actually help?

0 coins

No marketing here, just sharing what helped me. I was literally checking WMR and transcripts 10x a day before I found this. It's the only thing that gave me actual answers instead of vague status messages.

0 coins

Fair enough, might check it out. The IRS website is so useless with these generic messages.

0 coins

That message with Tax Topic 152 is actually a good sign! It means your return made it through the first stage of processing. My transcripts updated exactly 2 weeks after I got that message. Check the website on Friday mornings around 5-6am EST, that's when they update the system.

0 coins

After weeks of no movement with the same message, I used claimyr.com to get through to an IRS agent. Got a callback within 30 minutes when I had been trying for days before. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my return and when to expect it. Instead of waiting in uncertainty for another month, I knew exactly what was happening and when my money would arrive. Totally worth it!

0 coins

What was holding up your return? Now I'm curious if it might be the same issue as mine

0 coins

In my case, they needed to verify some income I reported from a 1099 because the amounts didn't match exactly what the employer reported. Once I talked to an agent they fixed it right away instead of sending me a letter which would have added weeks to the process.

0 coins

Mine did this too! Checking transcripts a million times a day drove me crazy. Have you tried reading what the codes mean on your account transcript? Or is it completely empty? If it's empty that usually means they haven't assigned your return to a processing center yet.

0 coins

It's totally empty - when I try to access 2023 transcripts it says no record of return filed. Guess that means I'm still waiting to be assigned to a processing center 😔

0 coins

pro tip: call the IRS right when they open at 7am Eastern time. I got through immediately and had an agent explain exactly what was happening with my return. Saved me weeks of waiting and wondering.

0 coins

I tried this 3 days in a row and still got 'due to high call volume' messages and disconnected 🤦‍♂️

0 coins

That sucks! I guess I just got lucky that day

0 coins

Use claimyr.com - finally got through after weeks of trying to call myself. Totally worth it to actually talk to a human who can see your file!

0 coins

I hate that stupid error message so much. It literally tells you nothing helpful. 'Your return is delayed beyond normal timeframe' like no shit sherlock, I know that already!!! 😡

0 coins

RIGHT?! Give us ACTUAL information! Like what's causing the delay? What do we need to do? When should we expect movement? The vagueness is infuriating.

0 coins

exactly! and if we could just talk to a human they'd probably fix it in 5 minutes but instead we wait months... the system is broken.

0 coins

Is anyones elses WMR now completely down? I just tried to check and getting an error. Maybe they're updating systems?

0 coins

It's working for me but super slow. Try clearing your browser cache and cookies.

I'm in almost the exact same situation! Filed in late January, had to verify identity in person at the IRS office in early March, and just got that same "delayed beyond normal timeframe" message with Tax Topic 152 this week. My transcripts are still completely blank too. Reading through all these comments is actually really helpful - sounds like we're both making progress even though it doesn't feel like it. The fact that multiple people are saying 1-3 weeks for transcript updates after this message gives me hope. I've been checking daily but I think I need to follow the advice here and just check weekly on Fridays. Thanks for posting this - it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one dealing with this frustrating situation. Hopefully we both see movement soon! 🤞

I'm going through the exact same thing! Filed in early February, had to verify identity in person at the IRS office last month, and just got that same "delayed beyond normal timeframe" message with Tax Topic 152 yesterday. My transcripts are still completely blank too which has been driving me crazy. It's actually really reassuring to read all these responses - sounds like this is a normal part of the process after identity verification and that we should see transcript updates within the next few weeks. I've been obsessively checking every day but I think I need to take the advice here and just check weekly on Fridays. The waiting is so stressful when you're depending on that refund money, but it seems like once things start moving after this message, they move pretty quickly. Fingers crossed we both see some movement soon! Thanks for sharing your experience - it helps to know we're not alone in this.

0 coins

Same here! I'm in week 2 since getting that message and checking transcripts every Friday morning like clockwork now. It's definitely less stressful than the daily obsessive checking I was doing before. One thing that's helped me is remembering that no news isn't necessarily bad news - it just means they're working through the backlog. The in-person verification seems to be the key that gets things moving eventually. Hang in there!
