IRS claims they have no record of my 2023 tax return that I filed in June - HELP

This is absolutely maddening. I filed my 2023 tax return electronically on June 15th (had an extension) and got a confirmation from my tax software that it was received by the IRS. Fast forward to November and I still haven't received my refund ($3,700) so I finally managed to get through to the IRS today. The agent told me they have ZERO record of my return being filed!? How is this even possible? I have the confirmation number and everything. Has anyone else experienced this nightmare? What do I do now? I'm beyond frustrated and worried about my refund.

Unfortunately this happens more than you'd think. First, check with your tax software company to confirm they actually transmitted your return and it wasn't rejected. They should be able to provide you with an official IRS acknowledgment number, not just their internal confirmation. If they confirm successful transmission, call the IRS again and speak to a different agent. Sometimes the first person you talk to doesn't check thoroughly enough. Ask them to check under all possible variations of your name and SSN. If they still can't find it, you'll likely need to paper file. Print a copy of your return, attach any acknowledgment documentation from your tax software as proof of your attempted e-filing, and mail it certified with return receipt so you have proof of delivery. Include a brief letter explaining the situation. Also request a Tax Account Transcript for 2023 from the IRS website - sometimes this shows processing activity even when phone agents can't find your return.

Thank you so much for the detailed response! I didn't even think to check with the tax software company first. I'll do that first thing tomorrow morning. Really appreciate the advice.

Dealing with this exact situation now. Called software company and they said it was accepted but IRS says nope! Going on 5 months of back and forth 😭

Also worth noting that if you do end up having to paper file, expect a LONG wait. Paper returns are taking 6+ months to process right now.

I went through something similar last year and wasted WEEKS trying to figure out what happened to my return. Finally tried taxr.ai and it was insanely helpful! It analyzed my transcript and instantly showed me that my return got caught in some weird processing limbo. The explanations were super clear - way better than the confusing mess on the IRS website. Seriously saved me so much time and stress trying to decode all the tax jargon. I use it every week now anytime I need to check on my tax stuff or make sense of notices. You should definitely check it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does waaaaay more than just read transcripts! It can analyze notices, explain exactly what's happening with your return processing, tell you what actions you need to take, and predict timelines. It also explains everything in normal human language instead of IRS-speak. Best tax tool I've ever used by far. Literally everyone dealing with IRS issues should be using this!

is it safe tho? like what info do they need from u?

I've been using it for months - you upload your transcript or notice and it breaks everything down. Saved me from having to pay my accountant $250 every time I had a question!

After weeks of calling the IRS and getting nowhere with my missing 2022 return, I found this app called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a human at the IRS without waiting for hours. You put in your number and they call you when they've got an agent on the line. Talked to someone who actually knew what they were doing and found out my return got flagged for identity verification that I never received notice about. Best money I've ever spent to finally get my questions answered instead of waiting on hold for literal days.

This sounds like exactly what I need right now. I've tried calling 4 times and keep getting disconnected after waiting forever. How fast did they actually get you through?

Took about 35 minutes for me which was AMAZING considering I'd wasted like 6 hours trying on my own before. The agent I got connected with was actually super helpful too. Talking to an agent got my refund released so fast after months of nothing happening.

Wait is this for real? The IRS phone situation is literally the worst thing I've ever experienced.

This happened to me!!! I was able to prove I filed by showing the IRS the electronic confirmation from my tax software. They made me wait an additional 16 weeks but I did eventually get my refund. Don't give up! Make sure you keep good records and call back.

The IRS is absolutely useless this year. My brother and I both filed in February and neither of us have received our refunds. My brother's situation is exactly like yours - they claim they never received it despite him having confirmation. The entire system is broken beyond repair at this point.

Totally agree! The IRS is functioning at like 30% capacity with 1980s technology and everyone acts surprised when stuff like this happens 🤡

They're running critical systems on computers from the 1960s. No joke - they still use COBOL programming language. It's amazing anything works at all.

have you checked your transcript online? sometimes your return is actually there but the phone reps cant find it for whatever reason. create an account on irs.gov if you haven't already and check your transcript

I tried to access my transcript but couldn't verify my identity online (my phone is under my spouse's name). I guess I'll have to request it by mail which takes forever 😩

Try taxr.ai if you eventually get your transcript. It explains everything going on with your account way better than trying to figure it out yourself. Just upload and it tells you exactly what's happening and why. https://taxr.ai

Did you file with a professional or use tax software? If software, which one? Some of the free options have been having major issues this year with returns not actually being transmitted even when they say they were.

I used TurboTax. I paid for the premium version too, wasn't using any free option. Going to contact them tomorrow and see if they can tell me what happened.

Good plan. Ask them for the specific IRS acknowledgment code. If they can't provide it, that means it never actually made it to the IRS despite what their confirmation might have said.

CONTACT YOUR CONGRESSMAN. Seriously. When the IRS lost my return last year, I spent 3 months getting nowhere. Called my congressman's office and they have a dedicated staff person who deals with IRS issues. Had my refund within 3 weeks after they got involved.

I second this! Congressional inquiry is the nuclear option that actually works. The IRS has to respond to them.

This is the way. My senator's office fixed in 2 weeks what I couldn't fix in 6 months.

just had this same issue!!!! the IRS is a dumpster fire this year omg. I ended up having to re-file paper and include a letter explaining what happened with all my proof of the first filing. It's been 4 months and still waiting 🙃🙃🙃

Ok so I work adjacent to tax preparation (not a tax pro) and we've seen this ALOT this year. What likely happened is your return got rejected for some technical reason but your software never notified you. The IRS system has been extra glitchy with rejections this year.

This! Check if the last 4 digits of your prior year AGI match what you entered. That's the #1 rejection reason and often software doesn't alert properly.

i had tremendous luck using the taxpayer advocate service when i had a similar issue. they're backlogged but they DO help eventually. google irs tas to find your local office

TAS is great but they're so backed up now they won't even take new cases unless you're facing immediate financial hardship like eviction or utility shutoff 😔

Whatever you do, DON'T REFILE ELECTRONICALLY without talking to a professional first! It could cause more problems if your first return is actually in the system somewhere. Wait until you've exhausted all options to locate the first return.

The exact same thing happened to me! After months of frustration I finally used Claimyr and got through to an actual competent IRS agent. Turns out my return was sitting in some obscure holding queue because of a mismatch with my address format of all things. The agent was able to release it right there during the call. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent who actually took the time to search thoroughly. claimyr.com saved me from waiting another 6 months.

That's wild that it was just an address format issue. The system is so fragile. I'm definitely going to try Claimyr if I keep hitting dead ends. Did they find your return right away or did it take some digging?

The first agent actually couldn't find it either! But I insisted something was wrong and asked to speak with a supervisor. The supervisor found it in like 2 minutes in some secondary system they have. Definitely worth getting someone who knows what they're doing.

save ALL your records!!! acceptance confirmation, screenshots, everything. i went thru this in 2022 and had to prove to the IRS their own system was wrong. it was a nightmare but i did eventually get my refund + interest.
