ID Verification Completed 4 Weeks Ago - Still Shows 'Action Needed' and Transcript Shows N/A
I'm trying to help my mom with her tax situation and I'm documenting each step we've taken so far: 1. We completed the online identity verification almost 4 weeks ago (March 12th) 2. The IRS website STILL shows "Action Needed: Verify Identity" 3. Her transcript still shows N/A for 2023 tax year 4. Where's My Refund tool says "Action Needed" 5. Called IRS last week and spoke with a representative who said "nothing is wrong with the taxes" I'm confused because if nothing is wrong, why does her transcript show N/A and say no tax return filed? And why does WMR still say action needed? Has anyone else experienced this disconnect between what the IRS phone rep says versus what the online tools show? What should our next steps be?

The IRS identity verification system has exactly 3 separate databases that don't sync in real-time. Your verification completion on March 12th (28 days ago) would typically propagate through their system in 9-21 days. However, during peak filing season (which we're in now), this can extend to 24-35 days. The representative likely confirmed that your submission is valid and properly received, but couldn't see that the verification status hasn't yet propagated to all systems. The transcript showing N/A is consistent with a return that's been received but is pending ID verification in their central database.

How does this compare to paper filing verification? My brother had to verify his identity last year, but he filed on paper and it took almost 3 months before his transcript updated. Is the electronic verification supposed to be faster than that?

According to IRM 21.5.6.4.35.3, identity verification processing should be completed within 9 weeks of successful verification. The IRS Publication 5027 specifically states that online verification should resolve within 6 weeks. Isn't there a violation of their own procedural guidelines happening here if it's been 4 weeks with no database updates?

I'm so relieved to see this explanation. I've been dealing with the same issue and couldn't understand why the phone rep said everything was fine when the website showed otherwise. This makes perfect sense about the separate databases not syncing immediately.

I went through this exact same situation in 2022. Verified my identity online, but the system showed "Action Needed" for almost 6 weeks. What helped me understand what was happening was using https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript once it finally appeared. The tool explained that my return had actually been processing the whole time, but the ID verification flag wasn't properly cleared in their public-facing system. The transcript codes showed normal processing despite the misleading messages online. In my experience, the different IRS systems often don't talk to each other correctly during busy periods.

How's this taxr thing any better than just reading the IRS website? Their transcript explanations are pretty straightforward imho. Plus the IRS site gives you official info, not just someone's interpretation.

Lol I thought the same thing until I was staring at my transcript with 12 different codes that made zero sense together. š Used taxr.ai out of desperation and it actually explained the contradiction between my codes - turns out I had a freeze code AND a release code on the same transcript. The IRS explanations don't tell you what it means when codes appear in certain combinations or what timeline to expect.

Thank you for this suggestion. Just checked it out. Very helpful tool. Explains things clearly. Much better than IRS descriptions. Will use again next year.

Identity verification discrepancies are extremely common in the IRS Processing Pipeline this year. I experienced this exact situation in February where my Taxpayer Protection Program verification was completed but my Master File record wasn't updated for 32 days. The key issue is that the Identity Theft Victim Assistance (IDTVA) unit completes verification, but then it must propagate to both the Individual Master File (IMF) and the Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS) before your online tools update. In my experience, the WMR tool is the last to update - my transcript showed processing about 10 days before WMR changed from "Action Needed."

This is a typical IRS processing delay during peak season. What you need is to speak with an IRS representative who has access to the Taxpayer Protection Program (TPP) department, not just a general customer service rep. I recommend using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an agent quickly - they'll connect you to the IRS without the hours-long hold times. Ask specifically for a representative who can check your TPP verification status. The general representatives often don't have access to see whether your verification has been fully processed through all internal systems.

I would approach this systematically: ā¢ Print and save screenshots of the "Action Needed" message as documentation ā¢ Call the specific Identity Verification number (800-830-5084) rather than the general IRS line ā¢ Request that they specifically check the Taxpayer Protection Program database ā¢ Ask for a "Case Research" to determine if your verification is stuck ā¢ Inquire about getting a Taxpayer Advocate assigned if it's been more than 30 days I'm concerned that if this continues much longer, it could impact the timing of your refund issuance. The disconnect between systems is worrying and suggests your verification might be stuck in an administrative queue.

I went through this EXACT nightmare last year! The ID verification showed completed on my end but the IRS systems didn't update for almost 7 weeks. When will my refund actually process if the transcript still shows N/A? Did they give you any timeframe when you called? I need to know if I should keep calling them or just wait it out at this point.
