WMR shows 'Processing' with Topic 152 but Transcript says 'No Record of Return Filed' - What gives?
Filed my taxes 3 wks ago and I'm super confused rn. WMR tool is showing 'processing' w/ Topic 152, but when I check my transcript it says 'no record of return filed.' Wtf? How can they be processing something they say doesn't exist? š¤¦āāļø I'm taking care of my mom and really counting on this refund soon. Anyone else dealing w/ this weird contradiction? Thx in advance for any help!

This is actually a common situation during tax season, especially now in April when the IRS systems are overloaded. The WMR (Where's My Refund) and transcript systems don't always sync up in real-time. When WMR shows processing with Topic 152, it typically means your return was received and is in the processing queue, but hasn't been fully integrated into the transcript system yet. Have you checked if your return was accepted by the IRS after you e-filed? That's different from being processed.

Not OP but thx for this explanation! I got the same issue rn. My tax software did send me an 'accepted' email, so that means IRS def has it, right? Just waiting for transcript to catch up?

I had something similar happen last year. My return was accepted according to TurboTax, but my transcript showed nothing for almost 3 weeks. Then one day everything updated at once and my refund came the following week. It's like the different IRS systems don't talk to each other very well.

I think what might be happening is that your return is in the early stages of processing. The IRS systems aren't always in sync with each other, which may explain the discrepancy you're seeing. I was in a similar situation last month and found that https://taxr.ai was helpful for making sense of the transcript once it finally appeared. It analyzes all those confusing codes and explains what each one means for your specific situation. Might be worth bookmarking for when your transcript does update, as it can help you understand exactly where your return is in the process and when you might expect your refund.

OMG I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!! š” I had the EXACT same issue and it was driving me CRAZY! After trying to call the IRS for DAYS and getting nowhere, I finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got through to an actual human being in like 30 minutes! The agent confirmed my return WAS in the system despite what my transcript showed, and explained it was just in a processing queue that hadn't updated the transcript system yet. Such a relief to know what was actually happening!

Is this service really worth it though? I mean, if your return is just processing normally, paying to talk to someone who'll just tell you to wait seems like throwing good money after bad. No offense, but couldn't you have just waited another week or two and saved the money?

Have you checked whether you might have had any identity verification issues? Last year I had a similar situation, and it turned out I needed to verify my identity before they would continue processing. Might be worth checking if you've received any letters from the IRS requesting additional information.

Anyone know how long this discrepancy typically lasts? I'm in the same boat and need to budget around when I might actually see this money. šø The mortgage ain't paying itself lol.

According to IRS Publication 5344, normal processing time is 21 days for e-filed returns with direct deposit selected. However, Section 3.4 of the Internal Revenue Manual notes that transcript updates may lag behind actual processing by 5-7 business days. When Topic 152 is present on WMR, it indicates normal processing without specific issues, though this status can persist for the entire 21-day period.

Based on what I've researched, this seems to happen more often during peak filing periods. The WMR tool and transcript system appear to pull from different databases that don't always sync at the same time. It might possibly be worth checking your transcript during non-peak hours? Some people report seeing updates if they check very early in the morning or late at night when the system is under less load.
