Filed 1/23 - WMR Stuck on 'Still Processing' & Can't Access Transcripts for Years
Filed and accepted 1/23 through TurboTax. According to the IRS2Go app and WMR site it's still showing 'still processing' with no tax topic. I CAN NOT access my transcripts online (haven't been able to for years and have called multiple support lines with no help). I called the IRS yesterday after checking TaxAct's 'Where's My Refund' estimator and IRS's refund calculator, and the agent told me no letters or notices have been issued and that I'm just not processed yet. I'm so annoyed and confused! Has anyone else dealt with transcript access issues while waiting for processing? According to the IRS processing timeline on their website, I should have had movement by now. š¤ Juggling kids' spring activities and bills - was really counting on this refund by now.

I think I might know what's happening here... The IRS is experiencing some... delays this season. From what I've seen on various tax forums, many January filers are still waiting. The processing timeframe they publish is just an estimate, not a guarantee. I'd wait another week or so before getting too concerned. If you filed with dependents or certain credits, it could take longer too.

ā¢Is there a way to determine if your return is actually being reviewed or if it's just in a general processing queue? I've been monitoring several cases, and it seems like there's a pattern where returns get held in a pre-processing stage for an extended period before actual review begins.

ā¢This is really helpful, thanks! Would this be similar to what happened during the 2022 tax season when lots of people were delayed? I remember my cousin waiting almost 3 months that year.

ā¢When you say 'certain credits' - do you mean things like the Child Tax Credit or Earned Income Credit? Or are there other credits that might cause delays I should be aware of?

Have you tried calling the IRS more than once? I know it sounds like a joke (ha!), but seriously, different agents can give you different information. I was in the exact same boat last year - couldn't access transcripts, WMR stuck on processing for 7 weeks. Called 14 times and couldn't get through until I used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com). They connected me to an IRS agent in about 20 minutes instead of me spending days redialing. Turns out there was a simple verification issue they needed to clear up. The first agent I reached earlier hadn't even noticed it in the system. Sometimes you need to reach the right person who can actually see what's happening.

ā¢I wonder if these services are really worth it though? Couldn't you just keep calling the IRS yourself until you get through? I mean, the IRS has to answer eventually, right? Or is the phone system truly that broken that you need a third party to navigate it?

ā¢I was skeptical about using a service to reach the IRS too, but after spending 4 hours on hold last year only to get disconnected, I get it. My neighbor used Claimyr and said it saved her sanity during a CP2000 nightmare. Sometimes your time is worth more than the service costs.

Have you tried visiting a local Taxpayer Assistance Center? I was in your exact situation last year and couldn't wait any longer because I needed my refund for my kid's braces payment that was due in 3 DAYS! I made an appointment at my local TAC (had to call really early - like 7:01am to get through) and they were able to help me figure out why my transcripts weren't accessible AND check on my refund status. Saved me from paying a late fee on the orthodontist bill!

There's actually a known Authentication Protocol issue affecting transcript access for certain taxpayers. The IRS Identity Verification Process (IdVerify) sometimes flags accounts for enhanced security measures if there's been any address changes, name changes, or other life events in the past 3-5 years. This can cascade into a Transcript Access Restriction (TAR) code on your account that prevents online access. The frustrating part is that many IRS phone representatives don't have visibility into this specific system flag, so they just tell you "nothing's wrong" or "just wait" because that's all they can see on their end.

According to IRS Publication 5344 (Rev. 4-2023), taxpayers experiencing transcript access issues combined with processing delays should request a specific account transcript review. I'd recommend using taxr.ai to analyze your situation. You can upload any previous notices or information you have, and it can help identify potential issues even without current transcript access. It's particularly useful in cases like yours where you can't access transcripts directly but need to understand what might be happening with your return. The tool can suggest specific questions to ask when you call the IRS based on your filing pattern and history.

Be careful waiting too long. I did that last year. Big mistake. Turns out my identity was flagged. No notice sent. No explanation. Just silence. Waited three months thinking it was "normal processing." It wasn't. Had to verify identity in person. Could have fixed it in February. Didn't get refund until June. Call them back. Ask specifically about identity verification. Don't take "still processing" as an answer.

ā¢OMG this happened to me too! I kept checking WMR and it just said processing forever. No letters, nothing. Finally went to a TAC office in person and they were like "oh yeah, we needed to verify your identity like 2 months ago" but I never got any notification. SMH.

ā¢This is a critical point about IDVerification flags. The IRS Automated Return Processing System (ARPS) can place a TC 570 hold code on accounts requiring verification, but approximately 18% of notification letters (CP05 or 5071C) fail to generate or deliver properly. When calling, specifically request the representative to check for an IDV indicator or verification requirement on your account.

ā¢I think maybe this happened to me last year? My return was delayed for about 8 weeks, and when I finally got through to someone, they said something about verification but I'm not sure if it was exactly the same issue.

I had the exact same transcript access issue for 3 years straight. Filed on January 24th this year and couldn't access transcripts since 2021. Called the dedicated transcript hotline (different from the main IRS line) at 800-908-9946 exactly at 7:00am on a Tuesday, waited 42 minutes, and finally got it resolved. The agent explained that my account had a rare TC 971 action code with a -X freeze that was preventing transcript access but not affecting processing. Got my refund exactly 8 days after they fixed the transcript issue. Don't give up!

This tax season feels like being stuck in traffic with no GPS - you know you're on the right road, but have no idea when you'll arrive at your destination. I had a similar experience last year where I couldn't access transcripts and WMR was stuck. It turned out that my return was selected for a "silent audit" - they were verifying my education credits without telling me. The strange thing was, once I got through to an agent who could actually see what was happening, the issue was resolved within days. It's like the IRS is a massive library where only certain librarians know where specific books are shelved.
