E-filed early February, empty transcripts, needs identity verification but no letter received - how long after in-person verification?

I submitted my federal return on 2/15 and got accepted same day. Already received my Illinois state refund about a week ago, but my federal transcripts are completely blank. Nothing showing up on my IRS portal and no verification letter in my mailbox. Got frustrated and called the verification hotline yesterday. The rep confirmed my 2022 tax info but said I need to verify for 2023 and I'll need the code from the letter they supposedly sent me. She told me to wait till next week and call back if I don't receive it. Yeah right... I need my money now! Called my local IRS office today and managed to schedule an appointment this week to verify my identity in person. For anyone who's done in-person verification - how long did it take to see movement on your transcript after that? And more importantly, when did you actually get your refund??

I went through in-person verification last tax season. After my appointment, I saw my transcript update exactly 9 days later. My refund hit my bank account 5 days after that. So roughly 2 weeks total from verification to money in hand. Make sure you bring multiple forms of ID (driver's license, passport if you have one, social security card) plus a copy of your tax return. They might also ask for proof of address like utility bills. Good luck!

Thanks for the detailed response! Did they ask you any specific questions about your return during verification?

0 coins

Yeah, they basically went through some line items on my return and asked me to confirm them. Nothing too detailed, just making sure I was the one who filed it. The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes.

This is super helpful. I've been waiting for my verification letter for like 3 weeks now. Might just go the in-person route too

0 coins

I had a similar timeline - about 8 days for transcript update, another week for the deposit. Just be prepared to wait in line at the office even with an appointment!!

Honestly the best way to understand what's going on with your transcript isn't waiting on hold forever or trying to piece together random form codes. I used this tool called taxr.ai that actually explained my transcript and showed me exactly what was happening with my refund. It told me I had an identity verification hold before I even got the letter! I use it every week during tax season to keep track of my refund status. Check it out at https://taxr.ai - saved me so much anxiety trying to decipher those cryptic transcripts.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

Carmen Ortiz

•

It's AMAZING. It scans your transcript and explains every code and date in plain english. It told me exactly why my refund was delayed and even predicted when I'd get my money. I was about to have a breakdown dealing with the IRS until I found this. Seriously changed my whole tax season experience.

another sketchy website asking for personal info? no thanks šŸ™„

No no it's not like that at all! It just helps interpret transcript codes that the IRS already gave you. Literally saved me hours of googling random codes and trying to figure out what was happening with my refund. You should definitely try it!

I actually used taxr last month when my refund was stuck in processing for weeks. It showed me exactly what was happening when the Where's My Refund tool was useless. Would recommend šŸ’Æ

After 3 weeks of calling the IRS and never getting through, I used this app called Claimyr and got a callback from an IRS agent in under 2 hours. The agent was able to tell me exactly why my refund was held up and what I needed to do. Saved me so much time and frustration instead of waiting for some letter that might never come. You can find it at claimyr.com - talking to an actual human at the IRS got my refund released within days after being stuck for weeks.

Did you have to verify your identity with them too? Was wondering if they could expedite the process somehow

0 coins

Mei Liu

•

They couldn't do the verification over the phone, but the agent confirmed what was holding up my refund and gave me correct information about what to do next. Better than guessing or waiting for a letter that's probably lost in the mail!

another tax service? does this actually work or just take your money

it's just a way to skip the IRS phone queue. honestly it was the best money I've spent during tax season. I was on hold for 3+ hours multiple times before finding this. got to speak to a real person who could actually help

I tried calling the IRS like 10 times and always got the "call back later" message. This sounds promising tbh

I verified in person last year and it took exactly 7 business days for my transcript to update, and then another 5 days for the refund to hit my account. The verification appointment itself was super quick - maybe 15 minutes tops. Just bring your ID and all the documentation they ask for.

0 coins

The IRS verification system is such a joke. They send letters that never arrive then expect you to have the verification code FROM THE LETTER YOU NEVER GOT. I went through this exact thing last year. The in-person verification is actually faster in my experience. My refund was processed about 10 days after my appointment. Bring every possible ID document you have - they asked me for way more than was listed on their website.

•

Ugh that's exactly what's happening to me. What documents did they ask for that weren't on the website?

0 coins

They wanted my W-2s, a utility bill, and even asked for my birth certificate (which I didn't have). Luckily passport + drivers license + social security card was enough. Just bring everything you can think of to be safe

this is why I pay a CPA to handle everything. the IRS system is completely broken

0 coins

a CPA won't help with identity verification issues tho 🤔

0 coins

Ok but how did you even get an in-person appointment?? I've been trying for weeks with no luck. Every time I call they say no appointments available. Did you have to call at a specific time of day?

0 coins

Aisha Rahman

•

I called right when they opened at 7am and got lucky I guess. The rep said they release new appointments each morning.

0 coins

Thx gonna try that tomorrow. Been calling mid-day like a fool 😩

Try different IRS offices if you can travel a bit. Sometimes the smaller suburban offices have more availability than the main city locations.

I waited for that stupid letter for 6 weeks and it NEVER came. Ended up doing the in-person verification and had my refund exactly 13 days later. Should have just done that from the beginning instead of wasting all that time. The whole ID verification system is a mess.

I've been dealing with IRS transcript and verification issues for years, so here's my comprehensive advice: • In-person verification typically results in transcript updates within 7-14 business days • Direct deposit refunds usually arrive 3-7 days after transcript updates show completed processing • Bring MORE identification than you think you need (government photo ID, Social Security card, birth certificate, passport if available, proof of address) • Bring a copy of your tax return AND your W-2s/1099s • Request a direct contact number from the IRS representative at your appointment • After verification, check your transcript daily for the 846 code (refund issued) • The "Where's My Refund" tool usually updates AFTER your transcript shows movement Also, the verification process is completely separate from other potential review processes. Even after identity verification, they could select your return for other reviews that might delay processing. Hope this helps and good luck!

•

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I've been trying to understand the whole process. Did you need an appointment confirmation letter or anything?

0 coins

Miguel Ramos

•

They'll email you a confirmation - make sure to print that and bring it with you. They're pretty strict about the appointment times and documentation.

0 coins

Do you know what triggers these verification requirements? Is it random or is there something in your return that flags it?

0 coins

Miguel Ramos

•

From what I understand, it could be a combination of factors - significant changes in income/deductions from previous years, first-time filing, moving to a new address, or just random selection for security. The IRS doesn't publish their exact criteria.

Anybody else notice that the IRS never has any problem TAKING your money instantly but when it comes to GIVING you a refund suddenly everything moves in slow motion? šŸ™„

Preach! They can draft my bank account in seconds but take months to process a refund. Make it make sense šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

It's by design. They hold onto our money as long as possible.

0 coins

And they charge penalties and interest when you pay late, but do they pay US interest when our refunds are late? Nope!

0 coins

Paolo Rizzo

•

actually they do pay interest on delayed refunds after 45 days from filing deadline or the date you filed, whichever is later. but the rate is pathetic lol

0 coins

StarSailor

•

wait fr? I've never seen interest added to my refund and I've had some REALLY delayed ones

They only add it if it's their fault for the delay, not if they're waiting on you for something like verification. System is rigged šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

My transcripts were blank for 2 months last year! Verification letter never showed up, but when I went in person it was resolved pretty quickly. Took about 2 weeks to get my refund after the appointment. Just make sure you bring literally every document you can think of because they are super strict.

Does anyone know if they can verify multiple tax years in one appointment? I have the same issue for both 2022 and 2023 returns...

0 coins

yes they can! I had to verify for 2 years last spring. Just make sure to bring copies of both returns.

0 coins

Amina Sy

•

awesome, thanks! did they make you do the whole process twice or just verified both at once?

0 coins

They did it all in one shot, took maybe 5-10 minutes longer than a single year verification. Super quick honestly.

0 coins

after dealing with identity verification hell for months, i found this tool taxr.ai that has been a total life saver. it analyzes your transcripts and explains EXACTLY what's happening with your refund in normal human language. it even alerts me when something changes on my account. wish i knew about it sooner honestly https://taxr.ai

0 coins

how is this different from just checking your transcript yourself? seems kinda unnecessary

0 coins

have you ever tried to read those transcripts? it's like trying to decode alien hieroglyphics šŸ‘½ this actually explains what each code means and what's happening with your refund. saved me hours of googling random codes and dates

I verified in person last April after waiting weeks for a letter that never came. My transcript updated about a week later and the refund hit my account 4 days after that. The appointment was quick - maybe 20 minutes. Make sure you bring multiple forms of ID and proof of address!

Pro tip: If you want to see if a letter was actually mailed to you, sign up for USPS Informed Delivery. It scans all mail coming to your address so you'll know if the IRS actually sent something. I caught the fact that my verification letter was sent to my old address this way.

0 coins

Aisha Rahman

•

That's a great idea! Just signed up for it now, thanks!

0 coins

Informed Delivery is the BEST. I use it for everything now. No more 'lost mail' excuses from anyone lol

0 coins

Be aware that it doesn't catch everything though. Sometimes letters slip through without being scanned in the system.

Spent three weeks trying to get through to the IRS on the phone with no luck. Finally used Claimyr and got a callback within 45 minutes from an actual IRS agent who helped clear up my verification issues. claimyr.com was seriously the best thing ever after wasting hours on hold. The agent told me exactly which office to go to for in-person verification and what to bring. Talking to a human at the IRS made all the difference in getting this sorted out quickly.

seems sketchy, does it actually work? how much did it cost?

0 coins

It absolutely works! I was super skeptical too, but after trying to call the IRS for literal WEEKS and always getting the 'call volume too high' message, I was desperate. It was worth every penny to finally talk to someone who could help. My refund was released a week after I verified.

My partner and I both had to verify in person this year. Mine took exactly 10 days after verification to get the refund, hers took almost 4 weeks. Seems to be pretty random how long it takes after verification. Just FYI so you don't panic if it's not super fast.

0 coins

Its insane that the IRS will hold your refund hostage for "verification" but won't actually tell you about it unless you proactively call them. Like how many people just never get there refund because they dont know to call and check on the status? The system is completely broken.

0 coins

This happens to MILLIONS of people every year. The IRS estimates that something like 20% of refunds require some kind of verification or additional review. That's why checking your transcript regularly is so important.

0 coins

and the people who need their refunds the most (lower income) are least likely to know how to navigate the system. it's so predatory

Whatever you do, DO NOT count on a specific timeline for getting your refund after verification. I verified in person last year and it still took 6 weeks to get my money. My friend verified the same day at the same office and got her refund in 10 days. There's no rhyme or reason to it.

0 coins

Aisha Rahman

•

Ugh that's so frustrating. Did you call to follow up at all during those 6 weeks?

I called every week and got a different answer each time. One agent said it was processing, another said I needed to verify AGAIN, a third said everything was fine and to just wait. Total chaos.

Lifehack: If you file a paper return instead of e-filing, you're much less likely to get flagged for identity verification. I haven't been asked to verify in 5 years since I switched to paper filing. Yes it takes longer initially but no verification hassles.

0 coins

wait really? might try this next year, the verification stuff is so annoying

0 coins

Ethan Clark

•

This is actually true! The automated system that flags for verification mainly focuses on electronic returns. Paper returns go through a different process.

0 coins

StarStrider

but paper returns take forever to process. last year it took like 4 months to get my refund when I filed by mail

0 coins

yeah but at least it's a predictable 3-4 months. with e-file and verification issues it can be anywhere from 3 weeks to never lol
