Filed March 5th, randomly checked transcript April 15th and found identity verification needed, got DDD after in-person verification
I filed on March 5th and got accepted same day. Around April 15th I randomly decided to log into my account to check my transcripts. To my surprise, it showed I needed to verify my tax return in my notifications. I called for several days trying to see if I could verify over the phone, and was asking when to expect the verification letter. Since I'm not in a disaster state, they wouldn't let me do the verification over the phone. Got tired of waiting for a letter and went in person last Monday to verify. My transcripts went from completely blank to showing all codes that Friday, including my 846 code with a DDD of May 24th. Money hit my TurboTax card yesterday.

The IRS has been requiring more identity verification in recent years to combat tax fraud. What happened to you is pretty common - they placed a hold on your refund until you verified your identity. For future reference, there are three ways to verify: 1. In person at a local IRS office (what you did) 2. By mail using the 5071C letter they send 3. Online through ID.me if you have an online account The good news is that once you verified, they processed your return quickly. It's standard for the DDD (Direct Deposit Date) to appear with code 846 shortly after verification. The whole process typically takes 7-21 days after verification, but yours was on the faster end.

Thanks for explaining! I was freaking out cuz I really needed that money. Do they always require verification or was I randomly selected?

It's mostly random selection, but certain things can trigger it like significant changes in income, address changes, or if someone tried filing fraudulently with your info before. The IRS doesn't share their exact criteria for security reasons.

My cousin had the exact same thing happen to her last year. She waited 3 months for the letter before realizing she could just go in person 🤦♂️

I was in this exact same situation last year trying to figure out what was happening with my transcript. Honestly the best tool I've found is taxr.ai - I was like you randomly checking and confused by all the codes. This tool reads your transcript and explains everything going on including verification requirements and when your refund will ACTUALLY arrive. I use it every time I check my transcript now because it translates all that IRS gibberish into plain English! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It's crazy powerful actually! You upload your transcript and it analyzes all the codes, tells you exactly what stage your return is in, if there are any holds, when to expect your refund, and explains what every code means in normal human language. Saved me hours of googling and stressing!

OMG I just tried it and wow. This is a complete game changer. I've been staring at my transcript for weeks confused why my refund was delayed and this literally told me EXACTLY what was happening and when I'll get paid. Seriously everyone needs to know about this!!!

Honestly it's worth every penny considering how much time it saves. I spent like 20+ hours trying to understand my transcript before finding this. It's insanely good for making sense of complex tax situations!

After having a similar issue, I spent WEEKS trying to get someone from the IRS on the phone with no luck. I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from an actual IRS agent within 45 minutes! The agent confirmed I needed to verify and walked me through my options. Talking to a real person was a total game-changer and got my refund moving. Best money I've ever spent to finally get my questions answered.

is this for real? sounds like a scam tbh

Not a scam at all. It basically navigates the IRS phone system for you and gets you in the callback queue without you having to wait on hold. The IRS agent calls YOU back. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying to call for weeks and always getting the "call volume too high" message.

how much does it cost??

Whatever it costs, it was 1000% worth it considering I was waiting on a $5k refund that was just sitting there. Talking directly to an agent solved everything for me when nothing else worked.

Hmm I might try this. Been trying to call for months and either get hung up on or wait 2+ hrs only to get disconnected 🤬

Did anyone else notice the IRS seems to be moving much faster this year? Last year I had to verify and waited over 2 months after verification to get my refund. OP got theirs in days! Maybe they finally got their act together? 🤔

LMAOOO no they havent. I verified in February and still waiting on my refund. It's all random luck. Some ppl get it fast, others get stuck in backlog hell.

They hired more people with that funding increase last year so maybe that's starting to make a difference?

Pro tip: ALWAYS check your transcript regularly during tax season even if you think everything is fine. The IRS doesn't always send notices promptly and sometimes they get lost in the mail. I've had multiple clients miss important verification deadlines because they assumed no news was good news. The earlier you catch issues like ID verification, the faster you get your $$.

what is a DDD? And how do i check my transcript? I filed like 6 weeks ago and haven't heard anything

DDD = Direct Deposit Date. It's when the IRS schedules your refund payment. Code 846 on your transcript shows this date. You can check your transcript by making an account at irs.gov - you need ID.me verification to access it.

I went thru the exact same thing but ngl i think the system is also regional. I'm in California and everyone I know had to verify but my family in Texas didn't. anyone else notice the same pattern?

I'm in Florida and had to verify this year. My brother in Florida didn't. I think it's more about your personal tax situation than location tbh

I don't understand why the IRS can require verification but then make it so hard to actually complete the verification 🤡 Like why not just let everyone verify over the phone?

For real!! The most frustrating part is that they tell you to expect a letter but that letter can take WEEKS to arrive. Meanwhile your refund is just sitting there in limbo.

They only allow phone verification for disaster areas because they don't have enough staff to handle phone verifications for everyone. It sucks but that's the reality of their budget situation.

You got lucky with the timing! My friend verified and still had to wait 9 weeks after for her refund. The whole system is such a damn mess.

My tax guy told me they've been doing way more verification checks this year because of all the pandemic fraud from 2020-2021. They're trying to be extra careful now which means more of us get caught in the verification net 🙄

This! My tax preparer said the same thing. Apparently the IRS got burned BAD with all the fraud during the pandemic and now theyre being super strict.

Wait. How do you know if you need to verify? I've been waiting on my refund for 2 months now and haven't gotten any letters or seen anything on Where's My Refund.

You need to check your transcript. Where's My Refund won't tell you if verification is needed. Go to irs.gov, make an account if you don't have one, and look at your transcript. It will show if there's a hold or verification needed.

Been there. Try using Claimyr to get through to a live agent (claimyr.com). Talking to a real person got my return unstuck when it was in limbo for months.

CONGRATS on getting your refund! The system is so messed up that it feels like a major victory just to get what was already yours to begin with 💅 Celebrate that win!
