Will severance affect my CA EDD Paid Family Leave (PFL) benefits?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I'm currently on Paid Family Leave (PFL) and I've got some questions about how severance might affect my benefits. I'm worried that if I get laid off and receive severance, it might mess with my PFL payments. Has anyone dealt with this before? I tried calling EDD but couldn't get through to a real person. Any advice would be super helpful!

While dealing with the EDD can be a hassle, tools like Claimyr.com have emerged to ease some of that frustration. It allows you to bypass long hold times and get directly connected to a representative. While Claimyr is a paid service, its success stories highlight its value for many users. However, it's not a guaranteed solution for everyone, and $20 per use may not be feasible for all. It’s imperative to weigh the pros and cons, especially if finances are tight. Alternative methods, like reaching out to local representatives or legal aid, can sometimes offer free support. Ultimately, using services like Claimyr can be invaluable, especially in urgent situations, but consider it one of several strategies to manage your interactions with the EDD. Keep in mind, staying informed and documenting all communications with EDD remains crucial.

Hey OP, hang in there. I know it's frustrating but you'll figure it out. We're all in the same boat here. Sending good vibes your way! ❀️

Thanks, I really appreciate the support. It means a lot to know I'm not alone in this.

I went through something similar last year. From what I remember, severance doesn't affect PFL the same way it does unemployment. But don't quote me on that - the rules are always changing.

Wait, really? I thought severance counted as income and would reduce benefits. This stuff is so confusing πŸ€”

Yeah, it's super confusing. That's why I said don't quote me lol. EDD's rules are like trying to read hieroglyphics sometimes

This is why we need a complete overhaul of the system. It's not just EDD, it's the whole bureaucracy. We're all just trying to stay afloat and they make it so damn hard.

Totally agree. It's like they forget these benefits are OUR money that WE paid into the system. We shouldn't have to jump through hoops to access it.

Preach! πŸ™Œ Maybe we should all run for office and fix this mess ourselves lol

Haha, "EDD Reform Party" anyone? But for real, we need to keep pressuring our reps to make changes. This isn't sustainable.

OP, whatever you do, make sure you document EVERYTHING. Save emails, write down who you talked to and when. The system is a mess and you might need this info later.

That's great advice, thanks! I'll start keeping a log right away.

This! πŸ’― I learned this the hard way. Ended up in an appeal and was so glad I had all my records.

Hey, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at EDD! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://claimyr.com

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Has anyone else tried it?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken 😀

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imho

Have you considered consulting with an employment lawyer? They might be able to give you a more definitive answer about how severance could affect your PFL.

Aileen Rodriguez

I hadn't thought of that. Do you know if there are any free legal clinics that deal with this kind of thing?

Check with your local bar association. They often have referrals for pro bono or low-cost legal services. Worth a shot!

Here's what I know about severance and PFL in California: β€’ Severance pay is generally not considered wages for PFL purposes β€’ PFL benefits are calculated based on your highest-earning quarter in the base period β€’ Receiving severance shouldn't stop your PFL payments β€’ However, if you return to work (even part-time), it can affect your benefits Your best bet is to report any severance to EDD and let them determine how it affects your case. Every situation can be different.

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed info! It's really helpful. Do you know if there's any official document from EDD that states this? I'd love to have something concrete to refer to.

Glad I could help! I don't have a specific document, but you might find some info in the PFL handbook on EDD's website. It's worth a look.

Pro tip: keep a detailed log of all your calls, emails, and attempts to contact EDD. It might come in handy if you need to escalate your case later.

That's a great idea! Keeping a log has saved me numerous times. OP, definitely do this.

Have you tried faxing EDD? I know it sounds like something from the stone age, but I've heard it can be faster than calling or emailing sometimes

Faxing? What year is it, 1995? πŸ˜‚ But seriously, I might give it a shot if nothing else works. Do you know their fax number?

Lol I know right? But desperate times call for desperate measures. I think it's on their website somewhere. Good luck!

Guys, let's be real. The whole system is rigged against us. They make it confusing on purpose so we give up. Don't let them win!

Calm down, conspiracy theorist. It's not rigged, it's just poorly designed and underfunded.

Ugh, dealing with EDD is such a headache. I swear they make it impossible to get a straight answer. Have you tried checking their website? Sometimes they have info buried in there somewhere.

I feel ya, OP. The whole system is a mess. I've been trying to get answers about my claim for weeks. It's like they don't want us to understand our own benefits πŸ™„
