EDD Maternity Leave Mess-Up: Claimed PFL Before Disability, Need to Switch. Help!

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my maternity leave benefits. I'm currently on leave without any salary support from my job. I know I can get state benefits from Disability (6 weeks) and then PFL (6 weeks), but I messed up when filling out the forms online. I accidentally claimed PFL first instead of disability. Now PFL has started, but I really need to switch it around so disability kicks in first. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any advice on how to fix this with EDD?

Ugh, that sucks! The EDD system can be such a pain to navigate. I had a similar issue last year, but with unemployment instead of maternity leave. Have you tried calling them directly? Sometimes talking to a real person is the only way to sort these things out.

Yeah, I've been trying to call but it's impossible to get through 😩 Been on hold for hours with no luck.

Pro tip: call right when they open in the morning. Like, set an alarm and everything. It's still a pain, but your chances are way better.

Or try calling at like 4:55 PM. Sometimes they stay a few minutes after closing to finish up calls.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Anyone else tried it?

20 bucks? That's highway robbery! 🤑

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it's legit. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

Can confirm, I used it last week. Got through in like 30 minutes. 💯

Ok, here's what you need to do: 1. Document everything. Write down dates, times, and details of all your attempts to contact EDD. 2. Send a written request (email or certified mail) to EDD explaining the situation and asking for the order to be corrected. 3. If you can get through on the phone, ask to speak with a supervisor. They often have more authority to make changes. 4. Consider reaching out to your local state representative's office. They sometimes have liaisons who can help with EDD issues. 5. Be persistent! Don't give up if you get a 'no' at first. Keep pushing until you get it resolved. Remember, you're entitled to these benefits. Don't let bureaucracy stop you from getting what you deserve. Good luck!

have you tried faxing them? I know it sounds archaic, but sometimes it works when nothing else does lol

oof maternity leave struggles. i feel you, mama. the system is so broken 😤

for real tho. we need better support for new parents in this country!

Wait, you can get disability AND PFL? I thought it was one or the other. Can someone explain how this works?

0 coins

In CA, you can get up to 6 weeks of disability for recovery from childbirth, then transition to 6 weeks of PFL for bonding. It's a sweet deal if you can navigate the system!

Mind. Blown. 🤯 Wish I'd known this earlier!

Have you tried reaching out to your HR department? Sometimes they can help navigate these things or even intervene on your behalf.

idk if this helps, but I had a similar issue with unemployment benefits. I ended up filing an appeal and eventually got it sorted. Took forever tho 😩

How long did the appeal process take? I'm worried about running out of time...

It took about 6 weeks for me. But that was during peak covid times, so it might be faster now? 🤞

This is why we need a complete overhaul of the system. It's ridiculous that new parents have to jump through so many hoops just to get basic support. 😤
