Messed up SDI and PFL order for maternity leave - how to fix?
Hey everyone, I messed up big time with my maternity leave benefits. I accidentally filed for Paid Family Leave (PFL) first instead of Disability. Now I'm trying to figure out how to switch it around so I can get Disability benefits before PFL kicks in. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any advice on how to explain this to the agency and get it fixed?

Ugh, that sucks! I've heard the order matters a lot. Have you tried calling them directly? Sometimes talking to a real person can help sort these things out faster.

ā¢I've been trying to call but the lines are always busy. It's so frustrating! š«

ā¢Pro tip: call right when they open. I got through after only 20 minutes on hold that way.

I found a way to get someone on the phone fast. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

ā¢Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

ā¢20 bucks tho? That's kinda steep...

ā¢Yeah, it's not cheap, but consider how much time and stress it saves. Worth it for me.

I went through something similar last year. Here's what worked for me: ⢠Call the EDD office first thing in the morning ⢠Explain that you made a mistake in the order of filing ⢠Ask if they can pause your PFL claim ⢠Request to file a retroactive SDI claim ⢠Be super nice and patient (the staff deal with angry people all day) It took a few calls, but I eventually got it sorted. Good luck!

ā¢This is so helpful, thank you! Did you have any issues with payments during the switch?

ā¢There was a brief delay, but they backpaid me once it was sorted. Just keep good records of everything!

Have you tried reaching out to your HR department? Sometimes they can help navigate these things or even contact EDD on your behalf.

idk if this helps, but there's a form you can fill out to request a claim adjustment. might be worth a shot while you're trying to get through on the phone.

ā¢Oh really? Do you know what the form is called or where I can find it?

ā¢I think its called DE 1089 or something like that. Check the EDD website, should be there somewhere

I had a similar mix-up with my SDI/PFL timing when my daughter was born. What saved me was being super organized when I finally got through to someone. I made a timeline of exactly when I gave birth, when I filed each claim, and what I was trying to accomplish. Having all that info ready made the conversation go much smoother. Also, don't be afraid to ask to speak to a supervisor if the first person you talk to can't help - sometimes they have more authority to make adjustments. The whole system is definitely confusing, especially when you're dealing with a newborn! Hang in there! šŖ

ā¢This is such great advice! I'm definitely going to create a timeline like you suggested before I call. Being organized sounds like it could make all the difference when dealing with EDD. Thanks for sharing your experience - it gives me hope that this can actually get resolved! š

I went through this exact same situation! The key is to call and explain that you need to "reverse the order" of your claims. When I called, the rep told me they could put my PFL claim on hold and then process a retroactive SDI claim for the period right after birth. It took about 2-3 weeks to get sorted, but they did backpay everything correctly. Make sure you have your due date/birth date ready when you call - they'll need those dates to calculate the correct benefit periods. The whole thing was stressful but totally fixable!
