EDD Mess: Accidentally filed PFL instead of SDI after c-section, now facing overpayment notice and no payments. Help!
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my disability claim. I accidentally filed for Paid Family Leave (PFL) after my c-section instead of Disability. I realized my mistake and submitted a disability claim, which got approved. Now my PFL claim is cancelled, but I'm not getting any disability payments. To make matters worse, I got a notice saying I was overpaid during the overlap of PFL and Disability claims, even though I didn't receive any disability payments for that time. Has anyone dealt with something similar? I'm trying to figure out how to get my disability payments started and clear up this overpayment issue. Any advice would be appreciated!

Ugh, the EDD system is such a mess! I had a similar issue last year. Here's what worked for me: 1. Call EDD first thing in the morning. Like, right when they open. 2. Explain the situation calmly and clearly. Emphasize that you didn't receive any overlapping payments. 3. Ask them to review your case and adjust the records. 4. Get the name and ID of the person you speak with. 5. Follow up with a written request summarizing your call. It took a few weeks, but they eventually sorted it out. Good luck!

•This is solid advice! I'd add: keep a log of all your calls, including dates, times, and what was discussed. It'll help if you need to escalate later.

•Calling first thing in the morning? lol good luck even getting through. I tried for WEEKS and always got the 'too many callers' message 🙄

•Yeah, it can be tough to get through. I used an auto-dialer app that kept redialing until I got in the queue. Took about an hour, but it worked!

•I used one called 'Auto Redial' on Android. Not sure if it's still available, but there are plenty of similar apps out there.

Have you tried reaching out to your local state representative? Sometimes they can help cut through the red tape and get things moving.

•I hadn't thought of that! Do you know how I'd go about contacting them?

•Just google '[your area] state representative' and you should find their office contact info. Send an email explaining your situation and ask if they can help. They often have staff dedicated to helping constituents with government issues.

•Thanks so much! I'll give that a try.

Ive been dealing with EDD for months now and its a total clown show 🤡 They cant even get basic stuff right, let alone complicated cases like yours. My advice? Document EVERYTHING. Every call, every letter, every penny. Youll need it.

•This. 💯 I learned the hard way that if you don't have a paper trail, you're screwed.

Hey, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

•Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

•20 bucks to skip the hold time? sign me up! how long did you wait?

•It's legit! I was skeptical too, but it really worked. I waited about 2 hours total, but I didn't have to be on the phone that whole time. The service called me when an agent was on the line.

•idk man, paying to talk to a government agency feels wrong. shouldnt this be free?

•I get that, but for me, the time saved was worth it. I was spending hours every day trying to get through. This way, I could go about my day and just wait for the call.

Have you checked your online account? Sometimes they update info there before sending notices. Might give you a clue about whats going on with your payments.

•Good idea! I'll take a look and see if there's any new information there.

This is why I always tell people to double and triple check which benefit they're applying for. The system is so unforgiving of mistakes. Hope you get it sorted out soon, OP!

Ive heard rumors that EDD is updating their systems soon. Supposedly itll make everything easier. but knowing government tech, it'll probably just create more problems lol

•Lmao, 'government' and 'easy' in the same sentence? Good one! 🤣

•I work in tech and let me tell you, government systems are a whole other level of complicated. It's not just about updating software, it's decades of regulations and legacy systems. Don't hold your breath for any quick fixes.

hey OP, just wondering - how long ago did you submit your disability claim? sometimes it takes a while for the payments to start, even after approval.

•It's been about 3 weeks since I got the approval notice. Is that normal?

•3 weeks is pushing it, but not unheard of. If you don't see anything by the end of this week, definitely call them.

Pro tip: If you can't get through on the main line, try calling some of the other departments. Sometimes they can transfer you internally and it's way faster.
