Need help switching from SDI to PFL - has anyone successfully done this?
Hey everyone, I'm having some trouble with my Paid Family Leave application. I initially applied for disability, but now I need to switch to PFL. Has anyone gone through this process before? I'm not sure if I need to submit a new application or if there's a way to change my existing one. Any advice would be really appreciated!

I found a way to solve switching disability to PFL application, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ctGnXDBagU

Ugh, I feel your pain! I went through something similar last year. From what I remember, you'll probably need to submit a new application for PFL. The systems for disability and PFL are separate, even though they're both handled by the same department. It's a pain, but that's how it works 🙄

•Thanks for the info! Did you have any issues with the timing when you switched? I'm worried about gaps in coverage.

•There was a bit of a gap for me, maybe about a week or so. Make sure you submit your PFL app ASAP to minimize any delays. Good luck!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone to help with this! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

•Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this? $20 seems steep just to make a phone call.

•I get the skepticism, but it honestly saved me hours of frustration. The $20 was worth it to actually talk to a human and get my issue resolved.

•I've used it before too. It's legit. Saved me from pulling my hair out trying to get through on my own lol

Pro tip: document EVERYTHING. Keep copies of all your paperwork, note down every call you make (date, time, who you spoke to). The system is a mess and you might need to prove you've been trying to sort this out.

have you tried reaching out to your HR department? sometimes they can help navigate this stuff or at least point you in the right direction. worth a shot if you havent already!

The whole system is a joke. I've been trying to sort out my benefits for MONTHS. Good luck, OP. You're gonna need it 😫

•Preach! 🙌 It's like they purposely make it confusing just to discourage people from claiming their benefits.

Here's a detailed breakdown of what you need to do: 1. First, you need to notify your current disability claim that you're ending it. There should be a form for this on the EDD website. 2. Then, you'll need to file a new claim for PFL. This is a separate process from disability. 3. Make sure you have all your documentation ready. You'll need medical certification from your healthcare provider. 4. Be prepared for a possible gap in benefits. Try to time your disability end date with your PFL start date if possible. 5. If you run into issues, don't hesitate to call the PFL helpline. Yes, the wait times are horrible, but sometimes it's necessary. 6. Keep copies of EVERYTHING you submit. 7. Follow up regularly on your claim status. Hope this helps! The process is a pain, but hang in there.

•Totally agree. It's like they're hoping we'll just give up and go away.

I just went through this exact situation a few months ago! You definitely need to submit a new PFL application - they're completely separate systems. The tricky part is timing it right so you don't have a gap in benefits. I'd recommend calling to formally close your SDI claim first, then immediately submit your PFL application. Also make sure you have your doctor fill out the PFL medical certification form (it's different from the SDI one). The whole process took about 2-3 weeks for me once I submitted everything correctly. Hang in there - it's frustrating but definitely doable!
