Need help filing EDD unemployment claim - what should I expect?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to file an unemployment claim and I'm feeling pretty lost. Has anyone gone through this process recently? Any tips or advice would be really appreciated. I'm not sure what to expect or if there's anything I should be preparing beforehand. Thanks in advance for any help!

Ugh, filing for unemployment is such a pain. I just went through it last month. Make sure you have all your employment info ready - dates you worked, employer names, addresses, etc. Also, be prepared to wait on hold FOREVER when you call. It's ridiculous how long it takes to get through to someone.

ā¢For real, the wait times are insane. I spent like 3 hours on hold last week š«

ā¢Pro tip: call right when they open in the morning. You might have better luck getting through quicker.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

ā¢Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

ā¢Yeah, it's totally legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

ā¢How long did it take for them to call you back?

ā¢It took about 2 hours for me, but I've heard it can vary. Still way better than being stuck on hold yourself!

Make sure you check your state's unemployment website for any specific requirements or documents you need. Each state can be a little different. And don't forget to certify your claim every week once you're approved!

I've been on unemployment for a few months now, and here's what I've learned: ⢠Be honest and accurate with all your information. Any discrepancies can delay your claim. ⢠Keep a record of your job search efforts. Some states require you to report this. ⢠Set aside some of your benefits for taxes if they're not automatically withheld. ⢠Check your email and mail frequently for any updates or requests from the unemployment office. ⢠If you start working part-time, report your earnings accurately. You might still be eligible for partial benefits. ⢠Don't get discouraged if it takes a while. The system is overwhelmed right now. Hang in there, OP. It's a process, but you'll get through it!

ā¢I heard it's because they do random checks? Not sure tho

Just a heads up, they might ask for an interview if there's any question about your eligibility. Don't panic if this happens, it's pretty common. Just be honest and have any relevant docs ready.

ā¢Have you tried contacting your local representative? Sometimes they can help push things along.

Quick question for anyone who knows - if I pick up some freelance work, do I have to report that? And will it affect my benefits?

ā¢Yes, you definitely need to report any income. It might reduce your benefits for that week, but you could still be eligible for partial payment.

PSA: Watch out for scams! There are a lot of people trying to take advantage of folks on unemployment. Never give out your personal info to anyone claiming to be from the unemployment office unless you're 100% sure it's legit.
