Starting new EDD unemployment claim - what do I need?
Hey everyone, I'm about to start a new unemployment claim and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. Just lost my job and I'm not sure where to begin. Anyone have any tips or advice on what I should have ready before I start the process? I want to make sure I don't mess anything up!

Welcome to the club, buddy. š First things first, make sure you have all your employment info ready. Last day of work, reason for unemployment, and your work history for the past 18 months. Also, have your social security number and ID handy. Good luck!

ā¢Thanks for the quick response! Do you know if I need my W-2 from last year too?

ā¢It's not usually required, but having it on hand can't hurt. Better to have too much info than not enough, ya know?

ā¢Don't forget your bank account info if you want direct deposit! That's a biggie.

Ugh, I remember when I had to do this last year. The website was such a pain to navigate. My advice? Set aside a good chunk of time and be patient. It might take longer than you expect.

Hey there! Here's a comprehensive list of what you'll need to file your claim: ā¢ Social Security number ā¢ California driver's license or ID card ā¢ Your last employer's info (name, address, phone number) ā¢ Last date worked and reason for no longer working ā¢ Gross earnings in the last week you worked ā¢ Information on all employers you worked for in the past 18 months ā¢ Citizenship status and, if you're not a U.S. citizen, your employment authorization info Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

ā¢Quick question - do you need to provide info for ALL employers in the last 18 months, or just the most recent one?

ā¢You need to provide info for all employers in the last 18 months. They use this to calculate your benefit amount. Better to have too much info than not enough!

Pro tip: take screenshots of everything as you go through the process. The EDD website can be glitchy af and you don't want to lose all your progress if it crashes.

Anyone else having trouble even getting through on the phone? I've been trying for days and it's always busy. This system is so broken š¤¬

ā¢I feel you. It's like trying to win the lottery just to talk to a human being.

ā¢Hey, I actually found a way to get through! There's this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then calls you when a real person picks up. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

ā¢Yeah, I was skeptical at first too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me a ton of time and stress.

ā¢Idk man, paying to get through to a government service feels wrong. Shouldn't this be free?

ā¢I get where you're coming from, but for me, the time saved was worth the cost. To each their own though!

Just a heads up, they might ask for additional docs after you submit your initial claim. I had to provide pay stubs to verify my income. Keep all your employment docs handy just in case!

Does anyone know if gig work affects unemployment eligibility? I've been doing some freelance stuff on the side and idk if I should report it š¤

ā¢You definitely need to report it. They ask about any income when you certify each week. Better to be honest than risk fraud charges!

Quick question - does anyone know if you can backdate a claim? I lost my job a few weeks ago but I've been putting off filing because I thought I'd find something new quickly.

ā¢You can request to backdate, but you'll need a good reason. They don't always approve it tho. Worth a shot!
