Just lost job, filing for unemployment. What do I need? EDD advice needed!

Hey everyone, I just lost my job and I'm about to file for unemployment. My last day was a couple days ago. Any advice on what I should have ready when I call to file my claim? I'm kinda nervous about the whole process.

Congrats on joining the unemployment club! 🎉 (jk it sucks) Make sure you have your last pay stub and any separation paperwork from your job. They'll probably ask for dates of employment and maybe your ex-boss's contact info. Good luck!

Thanks for the info! Do you know if they'll ask about why I lost my job? I'm worried about saying the wrong thing.

Yeah, they'll def ask about that. Just be honest, but keep it simple. If you were laid off, say that. If you were fired, be prepared to explain briefly. Don't volunteer too much info tho.

Also, make sure you have your social security number and drivers license handy. They always ask for those.

Ugh, good luck getting through on the phone. I've been trying for weeks and can never get a human. The system is so broken 😤

I feel you. Took me like 50 calls before I got through. Keep trying tho, early mornings seemed to work best for me.

Pro tip: I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. Used this site called claimyr.com - it's a calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then sends the call to your phone when a live agent picks up. Costs $20 but totally worth it for me. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

Wait, seriously? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

Yeah, I was skeptical at first too, but it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Just sharing what helped me out 🤷‍♂️

Make sure you file ASAP! There's usually a waiting week, so the sooner you file, the sooner you'll start getting benefits. Also, keep detailed records of your job search efforts - you'll need to report those.

Anyone know if the extra federal benefits are still a thing? I heard they might have ended but I'm not sure 🤔

0 coins

Pretty sure those ended a while back, but regular state benefits are still available. The amount depends on your previous income.

Yeah, the extra $300/week is gone. Back to basics now 😭

Here's a comprehensive guide for filing unemployment: 1. Gather necessary documents: - Social Security number - Driver's license or state ID - Employment history for the last 18 months (employer names, addresses, dates of employment) - Last pay stub - Separation notice (if you received one) 2. Know your rights: Each state has different eligibility requirements. Generally, you need to have lost your job through no fault of your own. 3. File online if possible: It's usually faster than calling or going in person. 4. Be honest: Provide accurate information about your employment and reason for unemployment. 5. Set up direct deposit: This is the fastest way to receive benefits. 6. Start your job search immediately: Most states require you to actively look for work while receiving benefits. 7. Keep records: Document all your job search activities. 8. Be patient: The process can take a few weeks. 9. Appeal if denied: You have the right to appeal if your claim is initially denied. Remember, unemployment insurance is there to help you. Don't be embarrassed about using it - you've paid into the system while working. Good luck!

This is great info! Wish I had this when I filed last year. Took me forever to figure it all out 😅

Just a heads up, be prepared for a long wait time when you call. Bring a book or something to keep you occupied while on hold. It's like watching paint dry, but worse 🙃

Lol truth. I swear I memorized their hold music 🎵

Has anyone had luck with the online application? I've heard mixed things about whether it's faster or if calling is better.

0 coins

Online worked fine for me, but I've heard it depends on your situation. If you have a straightforward case, online might be quicker.

I tried online and it was a nightmare. Ended up having to call anyway. YMMV I guess 🤷‍♀️

Whatever you do, DON'T miss your weekly certifications! Set a reminder on your phone or something. If you miss em, it can mess up your payments big time.

Anyone else feeling guilty about collecting unemployment? I know I shouldn't, but I can't help it...

0 coins

Don't feel guilty! You paid into the system while working. It's there to help people exactly in your situation. Use it and focus on finding your next opportunity!

I felt the same way at first, but then I realized it's just a temporary safety net. Nothing to be ashamed of. Hang in there!
