Money Network card hacked, can't access my benefits - EDD and MN giving me the runaround

I'm in a total nightmare situation with my EDD benefits right now. Someone somehow hacked into my Money Network account yesterday and changed my email to some disposable address (started with 'at' something). The weird thing is I never got ANY notification about this change on my regular email or phone! I caught it when I tried to log in and couldn't access my account. Thankfully they didn't steal my money (about $3,200 in benefits I was saving), but Money Network immediately froze the card. Now I'm completely locked out and can't access ANY of my unemployment funds when rent is due in 5 days! I called EDD and spent 2 hours on hold only to be told I need to contact Money Network for a replacement card. Then I called Money Network and waited another 90 minutes just to be told they can't help and I need to contact UI/EDD. Classic government runaround. Has anyone dealt with this before? How did you break this ridiculous cycle and actually get your money? I'm seriously panicking here.

You need to be persistent with Money Network. EDD can't issue you a new card - only Money Network can do that. Call them again and specifically ask to speak with their fraud department. When the automated system asks why you're calling, say "FRAUD" very clearly. They should transfer you to a specialist who can actually help. When you get through, explain that your email was changed without your authorization and you need your account secured and a replacement card issued. They'll need to verify your identity (usually SSN, address, DOB) and then can cancel the compromised card and issue a new one. Unfortunately, replacement cards take 7-10 business days to arrive. In the meantime, ask if they can expedite the card for an additional fee - sometimes they can do 3-day shipping for around $15.

Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'll try calling again tomorrow and specifically ask for the fraud department. Did you experience something similar? I'm worried about the 7-10 day timeline since my rent is due soon... do you know if there's any way to get emergency access to my funds while waiting for the new card?

omg this EXACT thing happened to me last month!!! so frustrating!! I kept getting bounced back and forth between edd and money network for like a week. finally got someone at money network who actually knew what they were doing. had to answer like a million security questions. new card came in like 8 days. but yeah they wouldn't give me access to my $$ until i had the physical card. sucked big time.

A whole week of being bounced back and forth?? That's terrifying. I can't go that long without access to my money. Did they at least explain how your account got hacked in the first place? I'm worried this could happen again even with a new card.

nope they never told me how it happened! just said there was "unusual activity" on my account. i ended up having to borrow money from my sister to pay rent that week. the whole system is a joke honestly

I work at a workforce center and help people with EDD issues frequently. Here's how to fix this properly: 1. First, file a police report for identity theft. Get the report number. 2. Call Money Network at 1-866-898-2213 and select the fraud option. Have your police report number ready. 3. They'll need to verify your identity with additional security questions beyond the basic information. 4. Request expedited shipping for your replacement card (there is a fee, but worth it in your situation). 5. While waiting for the new card, call EDD at 1-800-300-5616 and report the compromise. Ask them to flag your account with a security alert to prevent further unauthorized changes. 6. Important: Once you get your new card, immediately set up direct deposit to your bank account instead of keeping funds on the card. This provides an additional layer of security. The disconnect happens because EDD handles your claim, but Money Network handles the payment method. Money Network is actually the one who needs to resolve card issues.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I didn't even think about filing a police report. I'll do that right away. Is there any way to get emergency access to my funds while waiting for the new card? Even with expedited shipping, I'm worried about making rent.

Unfortunately, there's no emergency cash option while waiting for the card. However, once you file the police report and speak with Money Network's fraud department, explain your rent situation. In some rare cases, they can authorize a bank-to-bank wire transfer of your funds, but it's entirely at their discretion and not a standard practice. Worth asking though given your circumstances.

My condolences bro, the EDD-Money Network loop is the worst. Got stuck in it for 2 weeks last year when my card got damaged. 😢

I had something similar happen - not a hack, but my card got lost in the mail. Spent WEEKS trying to get a human on the phone at EDD. Finally found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual EDD rep in about 20 minutes instead of spending all day calling and getting hung up on. Check out their site claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep I spoke with was able to put notes on my account confirming the situation and then three-way called Money Network with me on the line to get the replacement card process started. Having an actual EDD person explain to Money Network what was happening made all the difference - suddenly Money Network was super helpful instead of giving me the runaround.

That's interesting, I've never heard of Claimyr before. Is it legitimate? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. Did they actually resolve your issue or just connect you to EDD?

Yeah it's legit. They just connect you to EDD faster than you could get through yourself. The EDD rep was the one who helped resolve everything, but I would've never gotten to them without the service. The three-way call with Money Network was what fixed everything for me.

The whole Money Network card system is GARBAGE!!! I've had nothing but problems with it for months. They LOVE to point fingers at EDD and EDD points right back at them. Meanwhile WE suffer without OUR MONEY that we're entitled to!!! I lost almost $2000 last year because of their "security measures" and nobody would help me. The system is DESIGNED to make it hard for us to get OUR MONEY. Why can't they just use direct deposit like a normal agency????? And don't even get me started on their customer service. 90 minute wait times are NORMAL. It's insane.

Actually, EDD does offer direct deposit now. You can set it up through your UI Online account once you resolve this issue. It's much more secure than keeping funds on the Money Network card.

NOW they tell me!!! After I already lost all that money last year! 🤬 Why don't they make this more obvious??? Typical government incompetence.

I think there was a data breach with Money Network recently. My brother had something similar happen last month and he found out a bunch of other people in his Facebook unemployment group had their accounts compromised too. Something fishy is definitely going on. Btw have you checked your credit reports? Might wanna freeze your credit just to be safe since they had enough of your info to get into your Money Network account.

Oh wow, that's concerning. I hadn't thought about a wider data breach. Thank you for the suggestion about freezing my credit - I'll do that right away. Was your brother able to get his situation resolved eventually?

anyone else notice that EDD's whole system seems designed to make it as difficult as possible to get help? its like they WANT us to give up trying smh

Preach! 👏 I swear it's intentional.

UPDATE: I wanted to thank everyone for their advice! I followed the suggestions here - filed a police report, called Money Network and specifically asked for the fraud department, and used Claimyr to actually get through to an EDD representative. The EDD rep was able to confirm my identity and did a three-way call with Money Network while I was on the line. Having the EDD rep there made all the difference! Money Network is sending me a replacement card with expedited shipping (should arrive in 3 business days) and they're adding extra security measures to my account. The EDD rep also helped me set up direct deposit for future payments so I won't have to worry about card issues again. Still not sure how the hacker got into my account in the first place, but at least it's getting resolved. Thanks again for all your help!

Great to hear! Once you get your new card, remember to transfer any remaining funds to your bank account right away. And definitely use the direct deposit option going forward - it's much more secure.

So glad it worked out for you! The EDD-Money Network loop is brutal to break without help.
