Money Network card completely drained overnight - possible EDD payment fraud?
I just checked my balance this morning and nearly had a heart attack - my entire EDD Money Network card was emptied overnight! Over $3,850 gone with multiple withdrawals from ATMs I've never been to. I've already called Money Network's fraud department (waited 45 minutes) and they gave me the runaround about 'investigating' but couldn't tell me when I'd get access to my funds again. I'm literally panicking because rent is due next week and groceries are needed NOW. Has anyone else experienced this recently? Is there a faster way to resolve this? The Money Network rep told me it could take 'up to 90 days' to investigate which is INSANE. Planning to visit an actual bank branch tomorrow morning but not sure if that will help since everything is handled through their phone system anyway. Anyone know if EDD can issue emergency payments while this is being resolved?

•6 WEEKS?? I can't wait that long! Did your cousin do anything special to speed things up? Did EDD help at all or was it just Money Network handling everything?

I went through this exact nightmare in January. Here's what you need to do immediately: 1. File a police report online - Money Network will ask for the report number 2. Go to edd.ca.gov and submit a fraud report through your UI Online account 3. Call Money Network again and specifically request a provisional credit (they don't volunteer this but they're supposed to issue this within 10 days while investigating) 4. Take screenshots of the fraudulent transactions from the Money Network app 5. Switch your payment preference to direct deposit on your UI Online account for future payments Visiting a bank branch probably won't help much since these cards are handled by Money Network, not the bank itself. The bank employees usually just direct you back to the phone number.

•Thank you SO much for these specific steps! I didn't know about the provisional credit option - definitely asking for that tomorrow. Going to file the police report online right now. Did you eventually get all your money back or just some of it?

This is EXACTLY why I switched to direct deposit the minute they offered it!! Those Money Network cards are CONSTANT targets for scammers. I had my card skimmed twice in 2023 and the second time I just gave up fighting with them and ate the $240 loss because the stress wasn't worth it. The EDD branch cant do ANYTHING about it btw, complete waste of time going there.

•I feel so stupid for not switching to direct deposit sooner. I just got comfortable with the card. Definitely changing to direct deposit once this is resolved. Really disappointing to hear the branch visit might be useless though 😞

I work with unemployment cases, and unfortunately, this is becoming increasingly common. Money Network fraud investigations typically take 45-60 days, despite what they initially tell you. Here's what actually helps speed things up: 1. Request the provisional credit as mentioned above - this is regulated by federal law (Regulation E) 2. Contact your local state assembly member's office - they have EDD liaisons who can intervene 3. Document everything - dates, times, representatives spoken with To answer your other question: EDD cannot issue emergency payments while fraud investigations are pending, but once you switch to direct deposit, future payments won't be affected. Also, check if your card was physically stolen or if this was likely a skimming/digital theft. Different types of fraud have different resolution processes with Money Network.

•how do u even find your assembly member?? the govt websites r so confusing

•You can find your state assembly member by going to findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov and entering your address. Their offices typically have caseworkers who specifically handle EDD issues for constituents. Much more effective than calling EDD directly.

I had a similar issue but could never get through to Money Network's customer service - kept getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and getting disconnected after 2+ hours on hold. I finally got through to an EDD rep using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they have this service that gets you through to EDD quickly. The EDD rep then connected me directly to Money Network's fraud department through their internal channels. Saved me days of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

•I've never heard of this service before. Does it actually work? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•It worked for me when nothing else did. The EDD rep I got connected to was able to do a three-way call with Money Network that somehow bypassed their regular hold system. Got my provisional credit approved during that call.

ugh i HATE money network!!!! there security is a JOKE! my card got hacked twice last year and they basicly accused ME of lying about it the first time!!!!! had to fight for THREE MONTHS to get my $$$ back and then it happened AGAIN two months later?!?!? like wtf i didnt even use the stupid card after the first time just took the $ out immediately after each deposit but somehow they still got in?? direct deposit is the ONLY way to go with edd now, these prepaid cards are garbage

•That's terrifying they accused you of lying! I'm scared they'll do the same to me. Did you have to provide any special evidence beyond the police report? I'm taking screenshots of everything just in case.

I actually just went through this exact situation last month, and I found that contacting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) was what finally got Money Network to resolve my case quickly. After filing my complaint with CFPB, Money Network issued my provisional credit within 48 hours and completed their investigation within 3 weeks instead of 90 days. The key is wording in your CFPB complaint - specifically mention that Money Network is violating Regulation E by not providing provisional credit within 10 business days. You can file online at consumerfinance.gov/complaint/ Also - regardless of what Money Network tells you, you ARE entitled to a provisional credit while they investigate. Don't let them tell you otherwise.

•This is incredibly helpful information! I'm going to file a CFPB complaint today if Money Network doesn't immediately issue the provisional credit when I call back. Thank you for the specific regulation to mention - that gives me something concrete to reference.

•Happy to help! One more tip: keep detailed notes of every conversation (date, time, rep name, what was discussed). I found it really helpful to reference these details when escalating my case. And don't be afraid to use the phrase "I understand you're legally obligated to provide provisional credit within 10 business days under Regulation E" - it works wonders.

Update from my earlier comment: For faster assistance, call EDD directly instead of Money Network. Ask specifically to speak with their specialized fraud team. The regular EDD representatives may say they can't help with Money Network issues, but if you insist on speaking with the fraud department (not the general claims department), they can actually initiate an expedited process with Money Network. Once EDD's fraud department flags your case as priority, Money Network typically processes provisional credits within 2-3 business days rather than the full 10 days. This isn't widely known, but it saved me weeks of waiting.

•Thank you for this update! Getting through to EDD is my next step. Between this advice and the CFPB complaint option, I'm feeling a bit more hopeful. It's still shocking how prevalent this problem seems to be based on all these responses.

u shuld check if ur card is still in ur wallet! sometimes they make fake cards that look exactly the same n swap them out when ur not looking. happened to my buddy at a gas station, he thouhgt he still had his card but it was a fake!

•My card is definitely still in my wallet - it hasn't left my apartment in weeks since I've been doing all my shopping online. This has to be some kind of digital hack or data breach. But thanks for the heads up, I'll double check the card to make sure it's actually mine.

Has anyone actually gotten FULL reimbursement from Money Network? I'm hearing so many horror stories and I'm terrified OP will only get partial money back. The whole system is rigged against us!!

•Yes, I received 100% of my funds back - $4,230 total. The key is documenting everything and knowing your rights under Regulation E. Money Network initially only wanted to reimburse transactions after I reported the fraud, but federal law requires them to cover all unauthorized transactions within a certain timeframe. Press them on this point specifically.

UPDATE: Just wanted to thank everyone for their advice! I called Money Network again this morning, specifically asked for a provisional credit citing Regulation E, and they're processing it now (should be available in 2-3 business days). I've also filed the police report, submitted the EDD fraud form, and filed a CFPB complaint as backup. Going to try reaching EDD's fraud department tomorrow to see if they can help expedite things further. Will switch to direct deposit immediately once this is resolved. This has been such a nightmare but I'm feeling more hopeful now. Will update again when/if I get my money back!
