EDD Money Network card has unauthorized charges - customer service won't help
Has anyone else had issues with unauthorized transactions on their EDD Money Network card? I checked my balance yesterday and found $780 missing from three ATM withdrawals I NEVER made in areas I've never been to. I called Money Network customer service immediately and the rep was incredibly unhelpful - kept saying I needed to fill out a fraud claim form that would take 10-15 business days to process, and they couldn't guarantee I'd get my money back! I've been on unemployment for just 2 months and really need this money for rent. The EDD website isn't helping either. Is there a specific number or person I should talk to? Has anyone successfully resolved this kind of issue with their card?

•Did you ever get your money back? I'm literally panicking about paying bills while they "investigate"

Unfortunately, this is becoming more common with Money Network cards. Here's what you need to do: 1. File the fraud claim as they suggested, but request an expedited review due to financial hardship 2. Ask them to send you the fraud form via email so you can complete it immediately 3. Take screenshots of the transactions in question 4. File a police report and get a case number - Money Network often requires this for larger claims 5. Contact EDD directly to inform them of the situation (though they'll likely direct you back to Money Network) In my experience, these investigations typically take 7-10 business days despite what they tell you. Consider switching to direct deposit if possible to avoid future issues.

•Thank you so much for the detailed steps! I didn't know about filing a police report - will do that tomorrow. Do you know if I can switch to direct deposit while this is being investigated or do I need to wait?

•You can switch to direct deposit anytime through your UI Online account. Go to "Payment Preferences" and select "Direct Deposit." You'll need your bank routing and account numbers. This won't affect your fraud claim investigation, but any new payments will go to your bank account instead of the card.

•Did you file a CFPB complaint? That's the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. They regulate these prepaid card companies and can often get results when customer service fails. I had to do this when Money Network ignored my fraud claim for 3 weeks.

I went through this exact situation in January. Money Network's regular customer service is absolutely useless for fraud cases. You need to specifically ask for their fraud department (press 3, then 2, then 1 in their phone menu). The regular reps are outsourced and don't have the authority to help with these cases. Also, while you're waiting for the investigation, you should immediately change your PIN, enable transaction alerts on the Money Network app, and consider temporarily locking your card when not in use. The fraud department can actually issue a provisional credit while they investigate if you emphasize the financial hardship. Direct deposit is definitely the safer option moving forward. I switched after my fraud case was resolved and it's been much more secure.

•Thank you! I didn't realize there was a specific fraud department option in the phone menu. I'll try calling again tomorrow morning using those prompts. I've already changed my PIN and locked the card, but I didn't know about the provisional credit option - that would be a lifesaver right now.

i had this problem trying to reach EDD about a different card issue, kept getting hung up on after waiting foreverrr. my brother told me about this service called Claimyr that gets you through to an EDD rep way faster. it worked for me, check out their demo video https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km - website is claimyr.com

OK so I work at a bank (not giving financial advice, just sharing knowledge) and here's what many people don't know: for unauthorized transactions, you have certain rights under Regulation E. Money Network has to provide provisional credit within 10 business days if they can't complete their investigation sooner. Be sure to use the phrase "Regulation E rights" when speaking with them. Also, file a complaint with the CFPB as someone else mentioned - this often lights a fire under them. One important tip: document EVERYTHING. Get the name and ID of every rep you speak with. Take notes of every conversation with timestamps. This will be crucial if you need to escalate. Direct deposit is definitely more secure than any prepaid card solution. I recommend this to all my customers who receive government benefits.

•This is incredibly helpful - thank you! I've never heard of Regulation E before. I'll definitely mention this on my next call and start documenting everything better. I'm going to switch to direct deposit as soon as I get this resolved.

I had unauthorized charges last summer. Here's what worked for me: 1. First, I called Money Network multiple times until I got a helpful representative. Keep trying! 2. I filed the fraud claim but also sent a certified letter documenting the unauthorized charges (keeping proof of delivery). 3. I reported the issue to both the CFPB and my state's attorney general consumer division. 4. I contacted my local EDD office directly (not just the general number). The CFPB complaint was what finally got them to resolve it. I received full reimbursement after about 3 weeks. The key is being persistent and escalating through multiple channels simultaneously. And yes, switching to direct deposit is essential - I did that immediately after this ordeal.

•Thank you! I'm definitely going to file with the CFPB. Did you find your local EDD office contact info on the main EDD website? I've only been using the general number.

•Yes, on the EDD website under 'Contact EDD' there's a page for office locations. They don't advertise the direct numbers, but if you call the main office reception (not the claims line) during business hours, you can sometimes get transferred to someone who handles card issues.

UPDATE: I wanted to thank everyone for the advice! I called Money Network again this morning and specifically asked for the fraud department using the phone tree someone suggested. Got a much more helpful rep who processed an expedited claim AND issued a provisional credit that should appear in 2-3 business days! Also filed a CFPB complaint as backup. I'm switching to direct deposit as soon as this is resolved. Will update again when everything is finalized.

•Great news! The provisional credit should help with immediate expenses while they complete the investigation. Definitely follow through on switching to direct deposit - it's much more secure and gives you more control over your unemployment benefits.
