Money Network card security breach - funds stolen after EDD deposit

WARNING to everyone receiving EDD payments on Money Network cards! My account was completely cleaned out last night - all $1,650 gone within HOURS of my benefits hitting the card. I didn't even get notification until I tried to buy groceries this morning and my card was declined. When I checked the app, I saw 5 different ATM withdrawals in a city I've never even been to! I called Money Network immediately and they put me through their fraud process, which is honestly a complete joke. The rep told me it could take up to 30 DAYS to investigate and potentially refund my money. How am I supposed to pay rent next week?? I'm trying to reach EDD to switch to paper checks or direct deposit, but of course can't get through. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice for getting this fixed faster? I'm seriously panicking right now.

omg this happened to my cousin last month!! the exact same thing! she got her money and then like 12 hours later someone drained the whole card at atms. money network is the WORST with security!!!! she had to wait like 3 weeks to get her money back and edd was absolutely no help

3 WEEKS?? I can't wait that long! Did she have to keep calling them or did they eventually just resolve it? And did she stay with MN or find a way to switch?

I'm sorry this happened to you. Money Network fraud cases are unfortunately common lately. I recommend taking these steps immediately: 1. File a police report and get a copy - Money Network may require this 2. Document all fraudulent transactions with screenshots 3. Call EDD directly to report the issue and request changing to paper checks 4. Submit a written fraud claim to Money Network (in addition to the phone report) 5. Contact the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to file a complaint In my experience, having a CFPB complaint often speeds up the resolution process significantly.

Thank you for these detailed steps. I already did #1-2 but wasn't aware of CFPB. I'll file that complaint right away. Have you personally had to switch from Money Network to checks before? I'm wondering how complicated that process is.

If you need to reach EDD quickly to change your payment method, I'd suggest using Claimyr.com - it's a service that helps you get through to an actual EDD agent without the endless busy signals. Saved me days of frustration when my account had problems. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Once you get through, specifically request to switch to paper checks until this gets resolved. The agent can make that change immediately.

does this actually work? im always getting that stupid message that they're at "maximum callers" no matter what time i call

Yes, it absolutely works. I was skeptical too but got through to EDD in about 25 minutes after trying for days on my own. The system basically keeps calling for you until it gets through.

This situation is why I ALWAYS transfer my funds immediately when they hit my Money Network card. Any unemployment benefits should be moved to a more secure bank account as soon as they arrive. For your current situation, here's what helped me when something similar happened: 1. Call Money Network daily for updates (document each call with rep name and call reference number) 2. Specifically request a "provisional credit" - by law, they must issue this while investigating 3. Ask them to expedite your case due to financial hardship 4. Send a formal written demand letter via certified mail I got my money back in 10 days using this approach, not the 30 they initially quoted.

Wait - they HAVE to give me a provisional credit while investigating?? The rep I spoke with never mentioned this! I'm calling them back right now to demand this. Thank you so much!

ive been telling ppl about MN being a scam for YEARS but nobody listens!!! they literally DESIGN the system to be easy to hack bc then they can blame "fraud" and delay giving ppl their $$. its all connected ppl - edd outsourced to them to make it harder for us to get our benefits. wake up!!!

While Money Network definitely has security issues, there's no evidence they're deliberately designing their system to be hacked. The problems stem from outdated security protocols and inadequate fraud detection systems, not a conspiracy against claimants.

I had this exact problem back in January. Money Network is terrible with handling fraud cases, but I was able to get my funds back within 2 weeks by being extremely persistent. Here's what worked: First, I got through to EDD and told them I needed to switch to paper checks immediately due to the security breach. It took several tries, but once I reached an agent, they were able to make the change within minutes. With Money Network, I requested to speak with a supervisor each time I called, and specifically cited Regulation E (federal law governing electronic transfers). This regulation requires them to investigate and provide provisional credit within 10 business days if the investigation will take longer. When they tried to delay, I mentioned I'd already filed complaints with the CFPB and the California Department of Financial Protection & Innovation (DFPI). This seemed to accelerate their process significantly. Don't give up - keep detailed records of all conversations, and follow up daily.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I've already filed the CFPB complaint and I'll add DFPI today. I've been calling twice daily and requesting supervisors. Definitely going to mention Regulation E on my next call - I had no idea about this legal protection.

has anyone actually switched to direct deposit successfully? i thought edd still only does money network or paper checks?? i want direct deposit but the website only shows those 2 options

EDD introduced direct deposit as an option in late 2024, but it's rolling out gradually. Not all accounts have been given access yet. When you certify, check the payment preferences section - if direct deposit is available to you, you'll see it as a third option there.

oh cool i didnt know that! ill check next time i certify thanks

UPDATE: First, thank you all for the advice! Here's what happened: 1. I called Money Network and specifically asked for a provisional credit under Regulation E. The supervisor initially tried to say it doesn't apply, but when I mentioned my CFPB complaint, they suddenly "found a way" to issue a provisional credit within 5 business days. 2. I used Claimyr to get through to EDD (took about 30 min but it worked!) and was able to switch to paper checks for future payments. 3. Filed complaints with both CFPB and DFPI as suggested. It's still frustrating that this happened, but at least I have a path forward now. I'll post another update when the provisional credit comes through. For anyone else with Money Network cards - PLEASE transfer your money out immediately when it arrives!

Excellent work advocating for yourself! The key with these situations is knowing your rights and being persistent. I'm glad you're getting the provisional credit soon.
