EDD Money Network card fraudulent withdrawal - payment disappeared overnight!
I'm freaking out right now and need help! I just checked my Money Network card balance this morning and discovered my latest unemployment payment ($875) that was deposited on 3/12/2025 has completely vanished! According to the transaction history, someone withdrew the ENTIRE amount at a Chase ATM across town on 3/13 - but my card has been in my possession the whole time! I literally haven't used the card since going to the grocery store on 3/10. I've already called Money Network to file a fraud claim (case #88742103), but the rep said it could take 7-10 business days to investigate. Has anyone else experienced this type of fraud on their EDD card? Any advice on speeding up the investigation? I have rent due next week and was counting on that money!

Unfortunately I had almost the exact same thing happen back in January. Someone somehow cloned my card and drained $1,100 from an ATM I've never been to. The thief even knew my PIN somehow! Money Network eventually refunded everything, but it took almost 3 weeks. Make sure you also file a police report - I had to provide the report number to Money Network before they would move forward with the investigation.

3 WEEKS??? I can't wait that long! Did calling them repeatedly help at all? I'm going to file a police report tomorrow morning. Did they give you a temporary credit while investigating or just make you wait?

I usually do that too! The ONE time I wait a day to transfer it, this happens. Lesson learned the hard way.

This is happening a lot lately with Money Network cards. It's called card skimming - criminals install hidden devices on ATMs or point-of-sale terminals that secretly copy your card data when you use it. Then they make a duplicate card with your info. That grocery store visit on 3/10 might be where it happened.\n\nHere's what you need to do:\n1. Already good that you reported to Money Network\n2. File a police report immediately (take documentation of the fraud)\n3. Contact EDD directly to report the fraud - call 866-401-2849\n4. Request a new card with a new account number\n5. When you get the new card, set up direct deposit to your bank account to avoid this in the future\n\nKeep detailed notes of all conversations, including representative names and call reference numbers. If Money Network doesn't resolve within 10 business days, escalate to a supervisor.

THIS!!! Card skimming is exactly what happened to me last year! I had swiped my card at a sketchy gas station and boom - two days later someone drained my account at an ATM in a completely different city. The EDD fraud department is actually pretty good about handling these cases but you HAVE to be persistent and call them repeatedly.

Thank you both for the advice! I'll definitely file the police report tomorrow and contact EDD directly. I'm trying to remember if anything seemed off at the grocery store checkout... Maybe there was something weird about the card reader, but I didn't pay attention. So frustrating!

You might want to try Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an EDD rep faster. I was in a similar situation with fraud on my account and couldn't get through on the regular lines. Claimyr connected me to an actual human at EDD within 15 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km\n\nEDD reps can sometimes put priority on fraud cases once you actually reach them. They helped me get a temporary credit while my case was being investigated.

u should check if any weird charges showed up b4 the big withdrawal. sometimes they test the card with a small purchase first to see if it works

I just double-checked and you're right! There was a $1.50 charge at some random gas station the night before. I completely missed that! Does this help my fraud case?

Yes, this absolutely strengthens your fraud case! Document that small test charge too - it's a classic pattern for card thieves. Make sure to mention both transactions when you file your police report. Money Network should recognize this pattern as it's a common fraud technique.

EDD really needs to get rid of these Money Network cards!!! They're CONSTANTLY getting hacked or skimmed. I've been on unemployment twice and both times had fraud issues with the card. First time someone bought $500 in gift cards at Walmart, second time they drained my entire balance at an ATM. It's ridiculous that they keep using such an insecure system!!!

It really is frustrating! I wish they would just direct deposit to our bank accounts by default instead of these cards. Did you eventually get your money back both times?

Yeah I got it back both times but it took FOREVER. First time was about 2 weeks, second time almost a month. Had to borrow money from family to pay bills while waiting. The whole system is a joke.

You actually can set up direct deposit to your bank account instead of using the card. Log into UI Online, go to 'Profile', then 'Payment Method', and select 'Direct Deposit'. You'll need your account and routing numbers. I switched to this after my fraud incident and haven't had any issues since.

anyone else notice that money network took away the option to lock your card through the app?? used to be able to lock/unlock it whenever i wasnt using it but now thats gone

They moved that feature! It's now under 'Card Security' in the menu instead of on the main screen. You can still lock/unlock your card, but they definitely made it less convenient to find. I recommend keeping your card locked at all times except the brief moments when you're actually using it.

I had no idea you could lock the card! I'm definitely going to start doing this with my replacement card. Thanks for the tip.

Oh no, that's horrible! Have you tried contacting your local state representative's office? Someone recommended that to me yesterday - apparently they can sometimes help push EDD issues forward. I'm planning to try that route if I don't see progress by Monday.

Update on my situation from January: After my card was compromised, I switched to direct deposit for all future payments. It's much more secure. You can change this in your UI Online account under Payment Methods. For your current situation, make sure to emphasize to Money Network that you need an expedited review due to financial hardship. Sometimes they can prioritize cases, but you need to be very clear about the impact this is having. Also, check if your bank or credit card offers emergency loans or advances for situations like this.

Thank you for the update and advice! I just called Money Network again and specifically asked for an expedited review due to financial hardship. The rep said she would note it in my file but couldn't promise anything. I'm going to check with my credit union tomorrow about emergency assistance options. And I'm DEFINITELY switching to direct deposit once this is resolved!
