EDD payment stuck on hold - can't change from debit card to direct deposit or reach anyone
Ugh, I'm at my wit's end with this Money Network debit card situation! My benefits have suddenly been put on hold for the last 10 days without ANY explanation. Every time I call EDD, I just get the 'maximum callers reached' message or get disconnected after waiting for 40+ minutes. I've tried calling at 8:01 am, 11:30 am, 3:45 pm - nothing works! Is there a way to switch from the debit card to direct deposit while this is happening? The Money Network portal doesn't seem to give me that option, and I can't find anything on UI Online that lets me change payment methods during a hold. My rent is due next week and I'm starting to panic. Has anyone dealt with a payment hold before? What could have triggered this? My certifications are all showing as 'paid' in the system but nothing's hitting my card!

•No emails at all, that's what's so frustrating! Nothing in spam either. How long was your payment on hold? Did you eventually get through to someone?

This sounds like it could be one of three things: 1. Quarterly income review flag (happens automatically in the system) 2. Identity verification issue with Money Network 3. A random eligibility review You won't be able to change payment methods while there's a hold. The problem is with your claim status, not the payment method. The Money Network card is just not receiving funds because EDD has temporarily stopped sending them. Check your UI Online inbox for any notices or tasks. Sometimes they don't email you even when they've sent you an important message there. Also check if you have any upcoming phone interviews scheduled.

•Thank you for this detailed explanation! I checked my UI Online inbox and there's nothing there. No scheduled interviews either. I've been certifying regularly and honestly about my work search efforts, so I'm really confused why this happened out of nowhere.

•How did you end up resolving it? Did you have to do anything specific or did it just start working again?

I had a similar issue recently and found a service called Claimyr that actually helped me get through to an EDD representative. It basically keeps dialing for you and gets you in the queue. I was skeptical but it worked - got connected in about 45 minutes instead of trying for days. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a demo video here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km When I finally got through, I found out my payment was on hold because of a wage verification issue. Something in their system flagged my account for a quarterly review. The rep was able to clear it on the spot and my money was on the card the next day.

•Thank you!! I'll check this out. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get through to a real person. Did they explain why you weren't notified about the wage verification issue?

The EDD never tells you ANYTHING!!! They put holds on accounts all day long without sending any notifications! Had mine on hold for SIX WEEKS last year because some employer I worked for in 2023 disputed something. SIX WEEKS!!! They're designed to make you give up. DON'T GIVE UP!!!

To answer your original question about changing payment methods: once your hold is resolved, you CAN switch from the Money Network card to direct deposit. Log into UI Online, go to Profile, then Payment Preference. But again, you have to clear the hold first. Also, check if your address is current in both your UI Online account AND your Money Network account. Sometimes holds happen when there's a mismatch or if they tried to send you something by mail that was returned. The most efficient way to resolve this is speaking with a tier 2 specialist at EDD (not just any representative). They're the ones who can see why your payment is on hold and have the authority to remove it if it's a simple system flag.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! My address is definitely current in both systems - I double checked. I didn't realize there were different tiers of representatives. How do I make sure I get a tier 2 specialist when I call?

When you get through to someone, immediately ask if they're a tier 2 specialist who can handle payment holds. If they say no, politely ask to be transferred to a tier 2. Not all reps will do this, but many will if you're nice about it. The tier 1 reps often can't see the specific hold reason or don't have authorization to lift it.

•Got it, that makes sense. I'll definitely ask for a tier 2 specialist when I call. Between this and the Claimyr suggestion, I finally feel like I have a plan. Thank you everyone for your help!

Has anyone had luck with contacting EDD through their social media accounts? I heard somebody got their issue resolved by messaging them on Twitter but not sure if that really works or if they were just lucky.

•EDD doesn't officially handle claim issues through social media - they'll just direct you to call the regular number. They specifically state they can't discuss individual claims on social platforms due to privacy/security concerns. Some people try tagging their state representatives on Twitter, which occasionally works but is hit or miss.

UPDATE: I used that Claimyr service mentioned above and ACTUALLY got through to EDD! Took about an hour total but the rep told me my account was flagged for 'quarterly review' whatever that means 🙄 They cleared it and my payment should be deposited tomorrow! Such a relief!!! BTW I also asked about switching to direct deposit and they said I can do that once the payment goes through. The option will appear in UI Online under profile settings.

•Thank you SO MUCH for the update! This gives me hope. I'm going to try Claimyr first thing tomorrow morning. Did they explain what a 'quarterly review' actually is or why you weren't notified about it?
