How long after phone interview does EDD approve or deny unemployment claim?
I had my EDD eligibility phone interview yesterday (after waiting 3 weeks for it!). The interviewer asked about my job separation and said they'd make a determination, but didn't give me any timeline. I've already certified for benefits twice since filing my initial claim, but everything is still pending. Does anyone know if EDD typically approves/denies claims immediately after the phone interview or is there another waiting period? My rent is due next week and I'm getting nervous about when I might see any payment. The interviewer seemed positive about my case but I can't tell if that means anything.

In my experience, you'll likely hear back within 48-72 hours after your phone interview. EDD needs time to process the information gathered during the interview and make a determination. If the interviewer seemed positive, that's usually a good sign! When your claim is approved, any pending certifications should switch to paid status within the same week. You can check your UI Online account for updates - look for a change in your certification status from "pending" to "paid."

•Thank you! That's a relief to hear it might be that quick. I've been checking my UI Online account obsessively but haven't seen any changes yet. It's only been 24 hours though, so I'll try to be patient.

•Oh no, really? That's exactly what I'm afraid of. Did you have to do anything during those 2 weeks or just wait? Did they at least backpay you for the weeks you certified during the waiting period?

The timeline varies a lot depending on your specific situation and current EDD workload. Some people get approved within 48 hours, others wait 1-2 weeks. The most important thing is to keep certifying for benefits every two weeks even while waiting for approval. This way, when your claim is approved, you'll get paid for all those weeks at once. Also, make sure you're available by phone in case they need additional information - they sometimes call back with follow-up questions without scheduling it first. If you're worried about making rent, you might want to request an expedited decision by calling the EDD directly.

•totally agree with this! keep certifying no matter what!! my cousin forgot to certify during his waiting period and had to appeal to get those weeks back. such a headache!!

EDD IS THE WORST!!!! I waited THREE WEEKS after my interview only to be DENIED for some stupid reason about my employer contesting the claim. Then I had to file an appeal which took ANOTHER 6 weeks to resolve!!!! The whole system is designed to wear you down until you give up. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING and be prepared to fight for what you deserve. The phone agents will tell you whatever they think you want to hear just to get you off the phone. DON'T TRUST ANYTHING THEY SAY!

•While I understand your frustration, the timeline can vary widely based on the complexity of each case. If an employer contests a claim, EDD does need to investigate further. The appeal process does take time due to the volume of cases they handle. For the original poster, if your employer isn't contesting the claim and the interviewer seemed positive, your timeline will likely be much shorter than this experience.

I had my interview last month & it took about 5 days to get approved. My bf had his last week and got approved the NEXT DAY! Seems super random honestly

The EDD typically takes 1-10 business days after an eligibility interview to make a determination, with the average being around 3-5 business days. Several factors affect this timeline: 1. Complexity of your case 2. Whether your former employer contests the claim 3. Current EDD workload and staffing 4. If additional verification is needed After approval, funds are typically loaded onto your EDD debit card or direct deposit within 24-48 hours. While waiting, continue certifying for benefits every two weeks as instructed. This ensures you'll receive all eligible back payments once approved. If it's been more than 10 business days since your interview and you haven't received a determination, I recommend calling EDD for a status update. Sometimes claims get stuck in the system and a quick call can resolve the issue.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! My case seemed pretty straightforward to me, but who knows how EDD sees it. My former employer laid me off due to budget cuts, and I have the termination letter showing that. I'll wait a few more days before panicking.

I actually had almost the exact same situation last month! Had my interview then certified twice while waiting. For me it took 4 business days after the interview to get approved, then another 2 days for the money to hit my account. I was laid off from construction work btw if that matters.

•That's good to hear! I was laid off from an office job, but it sounds like the process might be similar. 4 days would be manageable. Did they pay you for all the weeks you had certified during the waiting period?

•Yeah they paid everything at once! It was actually a nice surprise to get a bigger payment than I expected lol. Just make sure you keep doing your work search activities and documenting them even while waiting.

If you're having trouble reaching EDD by phone to check on your status (which is unfortunately common), you might want to try Claimyr. They help you get through to an EDD representative quickly instead of dealing with busy signals and disconnections. I was skeptical at first, but it saved me hours of frustration when I needed to resolve an issue with my claim after my interview. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

One thing to keep in mind: if the phone interviewer didn't explicitly tell you that additional information was needed, that's generally a good sign. When they need more documentation or have serious concerns, they usually let you know during the interview. Since your employer confirmed the layoff was due to budget cuts (based on your comments), I'd expect your approval to come through fairly quickly - likely within the next few days. Just keep checking your UI Online account daily.
