How long after phone interview does EDD approve or deny unemployment claim?
I had my EDD eligibility phone interview yesterday (after waiting 3 weeks for it!). The interviewer asked about my job separation and said they'd make a determination, but didn't give me any timeline. I've already certified for benefits twice since filing my initial claim, but everything is still pending. Does anyone know if EDD typically approves/denies claims immediately after the phone interview or is there another waiting period? My rent is due next week and I'm getting nervous about when I might see any payment. The interviewer seemed positive about my case but I can't tell if that means anything.

In my experience, you'll likely hear back within 48-72 hours after your phone interview. EDD needs time to process the information gathered during the interview and make a determination. If the interviewer seemed positive, that's usually a good sign! When your claim is approved, any pending certifications should switch to paid status within the same week. You can check your UI Online account for updates - look for a change in your certification status from "pending" to "paid.

•Thank you! That's a relief to hear it might be that quick. I've been checking my UI Online account obsessively but haven't seen any changes yet. It's only been 24 hours though, so I'll try to be patient.

mine took like 2 whole weeks after interview!! so frustrating. the lady told me 3-5 days but it wasnt true for me.

•Oh no, really? That's exactly what I'm afraid of. Did you have to do anything during those 2 weeks or just wait? Did they at least backpay you for the weeks you certified during the waiting period?

The timeline varies a lot depending on your specific situation and current EDD workload. Some people get approved within 48 hours, others wait 1-2 weeks. The most important thing is to keep certifying for benefits every two weeks even while waiting for approval. This way, when your claim is approved, you'll get paid for all those weeks at once. Also, make sure you're available by phone in case they need additional information - they sometimes call back with follow-up questions without scheduling it first. If you're worried about making rent, you might want to request an expedited decision by calling the EDD directly.

•totally agree with this! keep certifying no matter what!! my cousin forgot to certify during his waiting period and had to appeal to get those weeks back. such a headache!!

EDD IS THE WORST!!!! I waited THREE WEEKS after my interview only to be DENIED for some stupid reason about my employer contesting the claim. Then I had to file an appeal which took ANOTHER 6 weeks to resolve!!!! The whole system is designed to wear you down until you give up. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING and be prepared to fight for what you deserve. The phone agents will tell you whatever they think you want to hear just to get you off the phone. DON'T TRUST ANYTHING THEY SAY!

•While I understand your frustration, the timeline can vary widely based on the complexity of each case. If an employer contests a claim, EDD does need to investigate further. The appeal process does take time due to the volume of cases they handle. For the original poster, if your employer isn't contesting the claim and the interviewer seemed positive, your timeline will likely be much shorter than this experience.

I had my interview last month & it took about 5 days to get approved. My bf had his last week and got approved the NEXT DAY! Seems super random honestly

The EDD typically takes 1-10 business days after an eligibility interview to make a determination, with the average being around 3-5 business days. Several factors affect this timeline: 1. Complexity of your case 2. Whether your former employer contests the claim 3. Current EDD workload and staffing 4. If additional verification is needed After approval, funds are typically loaded onto your EDD debit card or direct deposit within 24-48 hours. While waiting, continue certifying for benefits every two weeks as instructed. This ensures you'll receive all eligible back payments once approved. If it's been more than 10 business days since your interview and you haven't received a determination, I recommend calling EDD for a status update. Sometimes claims get stuck in the system and a quick call can resolve the issue.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! My case seemed pretty straightforward to me, but who knows how EDD sees it. My former employer laid me off due to budget cuts, and I have the termination letter showing that. I'll wait a few more days before panicking.

I actually had almost the exact same situation last month! Had my interview then certified twice while waiting. For me it took 4 business days after the interview to get approved, then another 2 days for the money to hit my account. I was laid off from construction work btw if that matters.

•That's good to hear! I was laid off from an office job, but it sounds like the process might be similar. 4 days would be manageable. Did they pay you for all the weeks you had certified during the waiting period?

•Yeah they paid everything at once! It was actually a nice surprise to get a bigger payment than I expected lol. Just make sure you keep doing your work search activities and documenting them even while waiting.

If you're having trouble reaching EDD by phone to check on your status (which is unfortunately common), you might want to try Claimyr. They help you get through to an EDD representative quickly instead of dealing with busy signals and disconnections. I was skeptical at first, but it saved me hours of frustration when I needed to resolve an issue with my claim after my interview. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

One thing to keep in mind: if the phone interviewer didn't explicitly tell you that additional information was needed, that's generally a good sign. When they need more documentation or have serious concerns, they usually let you know during the interview. Since your employer confirmed the layoff was due to budget cuts (based on your comments), I'd expect your approval to come through fairly quickly - likely within the next few days. Just keep checking your UI Online account daily.

Hey Raul! I totally get the anxiety about waiting - I was in the same boat a few months ago. From what I've seen in this community and my own experience, the timeline really does vary but since your interviewer seemed positive and you have clear documentation of a layoff due to budget cuts, that's definitely working in your favor. Most people with straightforward layoff cases get their determination within 3-7 business days. The fact that you've already been certifying is smart - you'll get all that back pay once approved. Try to hang in there and keep checking your UI Online account. If you don't hear anything by early next week, that's when I'd consider calling for a status update. Fingers crossed you get good news soon!

I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago! Had my phone interview on a Tuesday and got approved that Friday - so about 3 business days. The key thing that helped me was that I had all my documentation ready (termination letter, final paystub, etc.) and the interviewer could verify everything quickly. Since you mentioned the interviewer seemed positive and you have your termination letter showing it was due to budget cuts, that's a really good sign! The fact that you've been certifying regularly is perfect too - you'll get all those weeks paid out as soon as your claim switches to approved status. I know the waiting is stressful, especially with rent due, but it sounds like you're in a good position. Keep checking your UI Online account daily and try not to stress too much!

•Thanks Amara! That's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing. I do have my termination letter and final paystub ready, and the interviewer was able to verify everything during our call. It's only been about 36 hours since my interview, so I'm trying to stay patient. Your timeline of 3 business days gives me hope! Did you get any kind of notification when your status changed, or did you just notice it when you checked your account?

I just went through this process about 2 months ago and wanted to share my timeline to hopefully ease your worries a bit! I had my phone interview on a Wednesday afternoon, and by the following Monday morning my claim status had changed to approved - so about 4 business days total. Like you, I had been certifying while waiting and the interviewer seemed positive about my case (I was also laid off due to company downsizing). Once approved, all my pending certifications switched to "paid" status within 24 hours, and the money hit my EDD debit card 2 days after that. The waiting is definitely nerve-wracking, especially when you have bills due, but it sounds like you're in a similar situation to mine with clear documentation and a straightforward layoff. Keep checking your UI Online account daily - when the status changes, it usually happens overnight. Hang in there!

•Thanks Grace! Your timeline sounds very similar to what I'm hoping for. It's reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same situation with a company downsizing/layoff. I'm at about 36 hours post-interview now, so if your 4 business day timeline holds true, I should hopefully hear something by early next week. The part about all pending certifications switching to "paid" status within 24 hours of approval is exactly what I needed to hear - that would really help with my rent situation. I'll keep checking my account obsessively (I know, I know, but I can't help it!). Really appreciate you sharing your experience!

I'm going through this exact same waiting period right now! Had my phone interview yesterday morning and I've been refreshing my UI Online account every few hours since then (probably not healthy, but I can't help it). Reading through everyone's experiences here is really helpful - it sounds like most people with straightforward layoff cases like ours get approved within 3-7 business days. The range seems pretty wide, but the positive feedback from your interviewer is definitely encouraging. I'm in a similar boat with bills coming up soon, so I totally understand the stress. At least we both kept certifying during the waiting period - from what everyone's saying, that back pay should all come through at once when we get approved. Fingers crossed we both hear good news soon!

•Hey Isaac! It's oddly comforting to know someone else is going through the exact same thing at the same time. I'm definitely guilty of refreshing my UI Online account way too often too - I probably check it like 10 times a day even though I know nothing's going to change that quickly! Reading everyone's experiences here has really helped calm my nerves though. It sounds like we're both in good positions with straightforward layoffs and positive interviews. The waiting is brutal when you've got bills looming, but at least we're not alone in this. Hopefully we'll both have good news to share with the community by early next week! Keep me posted on how it goes for you.

I went through this same process about 4 months ago and completely understand the anxiety you're feeling! In my case, I had my phone interview on a Thursday and got my determination the following Tuesday - so about 4 business days. The interviewer had seemed neutral during my call (not particularly positive or negative), but I was approved. What really helped me was that I had been laid off due to company restructuring, which sounds similar to your budget cuts situation. Since you mentioned the interviewer seemed positive about your case AND you have proper documentation of the layoff, I'd say you're in a really good position. The key thing is to keep certifying every two weeks like you've been doing - when your claim gets approved, all those pending weeks will flip to "paid" status usually within 24-48 hours. I know it's hard not to stress when rent is due, but based on what you've shared, it sounds like everything is going in your favor. Most people in your situation hear back within 3-7 business days, so hopefully you'll have an update soon!

•Thanks Zainab! Your experience sounds really similar to mine - I'm hoping that 4 business day timeline holds true. It's reassuring to hear that even when the interviewer seemed neutral, you still got approved. Mine definitely seemed more positive, so that gives me even more hope. The part about all pending weeks flipping to paid status within 24-48 hours is exactly what I needed to hear for my rent situation. I'm at about 48 hours post-interview now, so if your timeline is accurate, I should hopefully know something by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. The waiting is definitely the hardest part, but everyone's experiences here are really helping me stay optimistic. I'll make sure to update the community once I hear back!

I went through this exact process about 8 months ago and wanted to share my timeline to hopefully give you some peace of mind! I had my phone interview on a Monday afternoon, and by Thursday morning my claim status had changed to approved - so exactly 3 business days. Like many others here, I was laid off due to company budget cuts and had been certifying while waiting for the determination. The interviewer seemed fairly neutral during my call, but I think having clear documentation (termination letter, final paystub) really helped speed things up. Once I was approved, all my pending certifications switched to "paid" within about 6 hours, which was much faster than I expected! The money hit my EDD debit card the next business day. Since your interviewer seemed positive and you have solid documentation of a legitimate layoff, I'd expect you'll hear back within the next few days. The fact that you've been diligent about certifying every two weeks is going to work in your favor - you should get a nice lump sum when everything processes. Try to hang in there, and definitely keep us updated on how it goes!

I'm currently going through this same waiting period and all these timelines are really helpful to see! I had my phone interview 3 days ago and the interviewer seemed pretty thorough but positive overall. I was laid off from a retail management position due to store closures, so it sounds like a pretty straightforward case similar to what others have described here. The hardest part is definitely the uncertainty - I've been checking my UI Online account multiple times a day even though I know that's probably excessive. It's reassuring to see that most people with legitimate layoffs and positive interviews are getting approved within 3-7 business days. I've been keeping up with my certifications just like everyone recommends, so hopefully when the approval comes through, everything will process quickly. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - it really helps to know we're not alone in this stressful waiting period!

I just went through this exact process about 3 weeks ago! Had my phone interview on a Wednesday and got approved the following Monday - so 5 business days total. The interviewer seemed pretty neutral during my call, but like others have mentioned, having clear documentation really helped. I was laid off from my marketing job due to company-wide layoffs and had my termination letter ready when they asked for details. Once I got approved, all my pending certifications (I had 3 weeks worth) switched to "paid" status within about 12 hours, which was such a relief! The money hit my account 2 days later. Since your interviewer seemed positive and you have documentation of the budget cuts layoff, I'd expect you're in really good shape. The waiting is absolutely nerve-wracking especially with bills due, but it sounds like you're doing everything right by continuing to certify.
