EDD eligibility interview decision timeline - do they actually take the full 10 days?

I just had my phone eligibility interview with EDD yesterday after waiting almost 3 weeks for the appointment. The interviewer asked about my job separation (company downsized my entire department) and told me they'd make a decision on my claim within 10 days. Has anyone gone through this recently? Does it actually take the full 10 days, or do they usually get back sooner? I'm getting anxious because my rent is due next week and I've already gone almost 5 weeks without income. The status in UI Online still says 'pending eligibility interview' and hasn't changed since the call.

In my experience, EDD rarely meets their own deadlines. They told me 10 days back in February and it took 14 days to get my determination. I kept checking UI Online every morning and suddenly one day the status changed to 'paid' without any notification. Just prepare yourself mentally for it potentially taking longer than they say. If it's been more than 10 business days, that's when you need to start calling them daily.

Thanks for the reality check. I was hoping they might be faster since my case seems pretty straightforward (entire department laid off). Did your payments come through right away once your status changed to paid?

0 coins

my determination came in 4 days last month! so sometimes they are faster. good luck

0 coins

That gives me some hope! Was your case pretty straightforward too?

0 coins

yea laid off from retail. manager even told edd it was due to slow sales nothing personal

0 coins

The interviewer told me the same thing about 10 days but then my determination letter arrived in the mail before anything updated online! And the letter was dated 3 days after my interview. So check your mail too, not just the website. My online status didn't update until almost a week after I got the physical letter.

0 coins

That's really helpful to know - I'll keep an eye on my mailbox too. Did your payments start automatically after you got the determination letter?

0 coins

Yes but not right away. Got the letter saying I was approved, then about 3 days later the online status changed, then 2 more days before money hit my account. So there's still some waiting even after you're approved.

The 10-day timeframe is their standard response, but actual processing times vary widely depending on your specific case and current EDD workload. For straightforward cases like mass layoffs with employer verification, determinations often come within 3-7 business days. More complex separations (quits, misconduct allegations) typically take the full 10 days or longer. A few tips that might help: 1. Continue certifying for benefits even while waiting for the determination 2. Check both UI Online and your physical mail daily 3. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in the system 4. If approaching day 10, be prepared to contact EDD Also, it's worth noting that "10 days" typically means 10 business days, not calendar days.

Thank you for such a detailed response! That's really helpful. I've been certifying each week as instructed. I'll keep both physical mail and UI Online on my radar. Hoping I fall into that 3-7 day category since it was a mass layoff.

I HATE how they say 10 days but it's totally different for everyone!!! They told me 10 days in March and I ended up waiting 23 DAYS with zero communication!!! Had to call them 37 TIMES before I finally got through to a rep who told me my claim had been approved 2 WEEKS earlier but nobody updated the system!!! Their left hand doesn't know what their right hand is doing!!! Meanwhile I almost got EVICTED waiting for them to get their act together!!!

0 coins

Omg that's terrifying. I really can't afford that kind of delay. How were you eventually able to get through to someone?

0 coins

I had to call the SECOND they opened at 8am!!! Even then it took days of trying!!! EDD is a NIGHTMARE!!! Good luck!!!

I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to EDD when I was in a similar situation. After my interview, I waited 12 days with no update, then used their service to get connected to an EDD rep right away. Turns out my determination was already made but stuck in their system. The rep pushed it through while I was on the phone, and my status changed to 'paid' the next day. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km If you're approaching that 10-day mark with rent coming due, it might be worth considering rather than spending days trying to get through on your own.

I've never heard of this service before. Has anyone else used it? I'm getting desperate as the days go by.

i used it last year when my claim was stuck for weeks. works but feels weird paying to talk to a govt agency we already pay taxes for lol

my friend had her interview last month and got approved in 2 days. i had mine a week before her and waited 9 days. seems random tbh

I think it depends on who handles your case too. Some EDD workers just process claims faster than others. Or maybe certain types of claims get prioritized? Who knows with EDD lol

Just to clarify something important - when EDD says they'll make a determination within 10 days, that doesn't always mean the payment will be processed within that timeframe. The determination is just the eligibility decision. Once determined eligible: 1. Your claim status should change from "pending eligibility interview" to "approved" 2. Any weeks you've already certified for should change from "pending" to "paid" 3. Payment processing typically takes 24-48 hours after status changes to "paid" 4. Funds delivery depends on your payment method (2-3 days for Money Network cards, 1-2 days for direct deposit) So even in best-case scenarios, there's often a 2-4 day gap between determination and having funds available.

0 coins

Thank you for the breakdown! This helps set realistic expectations. I've selected direct deposit, so hopefully that'll be a bit faster once approved. Just hoping the determination itself doesn't take the full 10 days or longer...

Has anyone here had their determination take LONGER than 10 days? I'm wondering what the escalation process is. Do you have to call, or is there an online option to check the status of your determination specifically?

0 coins

YES!!! See my comment above!!! 23 DAYS of HELL!!! The ONLY way to escalate is calling over and over and HOPING to get through!!! The online system is USELESS for this!!!

0 coins

The official escalation process is to call the EDD customer service line. There's no online option specifically for checking determination status beyond what you see in UI Online. If it's been more than 10 business days, calling is your only recourse. Be prepared with your interview date and interviewer's name if possible.

Update: It's been 7 business days since my interview, and I just checked UI Online - my status just changed to 'paid' for the weeks I've certified! No determination letter in the mail yet, but the website status has updated. Thank you everyone for your help and insights through this stressful waiting game!

0 coins

That's awesome! Glad it worked out before your rent was due!

0 coins

Great news! You should receive the determination letter in the mail within the next few days, but the online status change is what matters most. Your direct deposit should process within 1-2 business days.

Congratulations Paolo! This gives me hope as someone who's been waiting for their EDD determination too. It's such a relief to see a success story where it actually happened within their timeframe. Did you get any notification when the status changed, or did you just happen to check at the right time? I've been obsessively checking UI Online multiple times a day and wondering if I'll miss it somehow.

0 coins

Thanks Diego! I honestly just happened to check at the right time - no notification at all. I was checking probably 3-4 times a day (morning, lunch, evening, before bed) and just got lucky when I checked this morning. The status had changed sometime overnight. I'd recommend checking first thing in the morning since that seems to be when a lot of people notice their updates. Don't worry about missing it - once it changes to 'paid' it stays that way, so you'll see it whenever you next log in. Good luck with yours!

This is such a helpful thread! I'm currently waiting for my EDD determination after my interview 4 days ago (also a mass layoff situation). It's reassuring to see Paolo's update that it came through in 7 days. The waiting is so stressful when you're already dealing with the financial strain of being unemployed. I've been checking UI Online obsessively too, but I think I'll try to limit it to twice a day to preserve my sanity. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - it really helps to know what to expect and that there are options like calling or using services to get through if needed.

Hang in there Malik! I'm in a similar boat - waiting for my determination after my interview last week. The financial stress definitely makes the waiting feel so much worse. I found it helpful to set specific times to check rather than constantly refreshing - maybe morning and evening like you mentioned. Paolo's success story gives me hope that mass layoff cases really do move faster since they're more straightforward. Fingers crossed for both of us that we hear back soon!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who went through this process a few months ago. My interview was also for a mass layoff (tech company downsizing), and I got my determination in 6 business days. The key thing that helped me was keeping detailed records - I wrote down the date of my interview, the interviewer's name, and exactly what they told me about the timeline. When I called EDD on day 8 just to check in, having those details ready made the conversation much smoother. Also, make sure you're checking your spam folder for emails - my determination notice went there instead of my inbox! The whole process is nerve-wracking but most straightforward cases like layoffs do get resolved pretty quickly. Wishing everyone still waiting the best of luck!

0 coins

That's really smart advice about keeping detailed records! I wish I had thought to write down my interviewer's name - I was so nervous during the call that I didn't catch it clearly. The spam folder tip is gold too, I never would have thought to check there. It's encouraging to hear another success story with a similar timeline to Paolo's. Did you have to do anything special after getting the determination, or did everything just process automatically from there?

0 coins

Once I got the determination email (found in spam!), everything processed automatically. My UI Online status changed to 'paid' within about 24 hours, and then the direct deposit hit my account 2 days later. I didn't have to do anything extra - just kept certifying for benefits as usual. The hardest part really is just the waiting game! For future reference, you can actually call EDD back and ask for your interviewer's name if you have your interview date - they keep records of who handled each case.

This whole thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm currently waiting for my determination after my interview 5 days ago (also a company-wide layoff situation). It's so reassuring to see Paolo's success story and hear from others who've been through this process. The financial stress while waiting really does make everything feel more intense. I've been checking UI Online multiple times a day, but I think I'll follow the advice here and limit it to morning and evening checks. Also definitely going to keep an eye on my spam folder and physical mail. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and tips - it really helps to know what to expect during this nerve-wracking waiting period!

I'm so glad this thread has been helpful for you Astrid! It's amazing how much less stressful the waiting becomes when you know what others have experienced. Your timeline sounds very similar to Paolo's and some others here - company-wide layoffs at the 5-day mark. Based on all the stories shared, it seems like you're right in that sweet spot where determinations often come through. I love how supportive this community is - we're all going through the same anxiety and uncertainty, but sharing experiences really does help. Fingers crossed you get good news in your UI Online check tomorrow morning or in the next couple days! Keep us updated when you hear something!

Reading through all these experiences really highlights how inconsistent EDD can be with their timelines! I'm currently on day 3 after my eligibility interview (also a mass layoff situation), and this thread has been incredibly reassuring. Paolo's 7-day success story gives me hope, especially since our situations sound similar. I've been setting calendar reminders to check UI Online twice daily rather than obsessively refreshing - definitely helps with the anxiety. Also taking notes on all the great tips here like checking spam folders and keeping track of interviewer details. It's wild that in 2025 we still have to use third-party services like Claimyr just to reach a government agency, but good to know that option exists if I hit the 10-day mark. Thanks everyone for sharing your timelines and experiences - this waiting game is so much easier when you know you're not alone in it!

0 coins

You're absolutely right about the inconsistency being frustrating! I'm also pretty new to this whole EDD process and was feeling so overwhelmed until I found this thread. It's crazy how much the timelines vary between people, but seeing Paolo's success and all the other shared experiences really does help manage expectations. The twice-daily checking schedule sounds like a great approach - I was definitely falling into the obsessive refreshing trap too. Good luck with your determination! Hopefully we'll both have good news soon. This community has been such a lifesaver during what's already a stressful time.

As someone who just went through this exact process last month, I wanted to share my timeline to add to the data points here. I had my eligibility interview on a Tuesday for a company closure (not just downsizing - the whole business shut down), and my determination came through the following Monday - so exactly 6 business days. What I found helpful was setting up text alerts through UI Online for status changes, which I didn't see anyone mention yet. You can enable these in your notification preferences. I got a text at 6:47 AM saying my claim status had changed, which was actually faster than checking the website manually. The whole experience is definitely anxiety-inducing when you're already dealing with job loss stress, but it sounds like straightforward layoff cases like yours tend to move more quickly than complex separations. Hang in there!

0 coins

Wait, you can set up text alerts through UI Online? I had no idea this was an option! I've been manually checking the website multiple times a day like everyone else here. That would have saved me so much anxiety during my waiting period. Do you remember where exactly you found the notification preferences? I want to make sure I have this set up in case I ever need to go through this process again or for anyone else reading who might still be waiting. Thanks for sharing your timeline too - it's great to have another data point showing that straightforward cases really do tend to move faster!
