EDD eligibility interview just finished - how long until employer contact and decision?
Just finished my eligibility interview with EDD this morning after waiting nearly 3 weeks for the appointment. The interviewer was actually really nice (wasn't expecting that from all the horror stories I've read). She told me they'll need up to 10 days to make a decision and mentioned they'll be contacting my former employer now. I'm super anxious about the wait time - does it REALLY take the full 10 days? I've seen posts from people who got approved right after their interview. Is that rare? I'm getting nervous because rent is due soon and I've already drained most of my savings after being laid off from the tech startup I was at for 3 years. Anyone know how quickly they typically contact the employer and make the final determination? This waiting game is killing me... 😓

In my experience, the 10-day timeframe is more of a maximum than the norm. I had my eligibility interview back in February, and they made a decision in just 3 days. The interviewer told me the same thing - that it could take up to 10 days - but I think they say that to manage expectations. A lot depends on how quickly your former employer responds and whether there are any discrepancies between what you reported and what they say. If everything aligns and your employer responds promptly, you might hear back much sooner than 10 days.

•Thanks, that's reassuring! Did you get any notification when they contacted your employer? Or did they just reach out to them without telling you?

mine took the full 10 days and then some!! its so frustrating but hang in there. they told me 10 days then it was more like 14 and i had to keep checking my ui online account everyday 😫

•Ugh that's what I'm afraid of... Did they at least backpay you for the waiting period once approved?

The timeframe really varies depending on several factors: 1. How complex your case is (simple layoffs tend to process faster) 2. Your former employer's response time 3. Current EDD workload and staffing 4. Whether additional information is needed If you were laid off due to lack of work and your employer confirms this promptly, you could see a decision in 2-4 days. If there are any disputes about your separation reason or if your employer is slow to respond, it might take the full 10 days or occasionally longer. My best advice is to keep certifying for benefits during this waiting period (if you're already in the certification cycle) and check your UI Online account daily for updates. The notification system isn't always reliable, so proactive checking helps.

•This is super helpful, thank you. It was a straightforward layoff (company restructuring), so hopefully that speeds things up. I've been certifying on time, so fingers crossed!

got approved literally as i was walking out of the interview room last month!! interviewer told me same thing about 10 days but then checked something in her system and said i was good to go right then. maybe u just got someone who likes to follow the script?

•That's not how it normally works though. The interviewer has to verify information with the employer before approving benefits in most cases. You probably had a situation where they already had the employer's response before your interview, which is rare but does happen sometimes. @OP shouldn't expect this as it's definitely not the norm.

The EDD phone system is IMPOSSIBLE to get through if you want to check on your status during the waiting period. After my interview last year, I tried calling for THREE DAYS STRAIGHT and kept getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message before it hung up on me. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They were able to tell me my employer had already responded and my claim was just waiting for final review. Saved me a ton of anxiety! They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Definitely worth it if you're going crazy waiting and need to know what's happening with your claim.

•Yes, it worked for me! I was skeptical at first but was desperate after days of trying to get through. The EDD rep I spoke with was able to check my file and give me an update that put my mind at ease.

Mine took 8 days but my buddy got his in 2 days we both had interviews same week in January. Think it depends on how backed up they are and if your employer actually responds quick. The system is completely inconsistent lol

One important thing to understand: the EDD has to give your employer a reasonable amount of time to respond to their inquiry, which is why they quote the 10-day timeframe. By law, employers have rights in this process too. If your separation was due to a layoff and there's no dispute about misconduct or voluntary quit issues, your case should be fairly straightforward. However, even straightforward cases follow procedural timelines. One tip: while waiting, make sure your UI Online account is properly set up to receive electronic notices rather than mail. This can save you several days of waiting for paper notifications. Also, continue your work search activities and document them carefully during this waiting period.

•Thanks, I didn't know about the electronic notices option. Just checked and I had it set to mail! Just changed it to electronic. Really appreciate the tip!

•Yes, you should be conducting work search activities from the moment you file your claim, not just after approval. EDD can ask for your work search record going back to your initial filing date. Better to be safe and document everything from the start.

Update: Just wanted to let everyone know I got approved today! Only took 4 days after the interview. Such a relief. Thanks for all the advice and support - it definitely helped me manage my anxiety during the wait.
