EDD eligibility interview completed but stuck in pending - how long for employer verification?
Just had my EDD eligibility phone interview this morning and I'm feeling stressed about the waiting game now. The interviewer said they need to contact my previous employer before making a final decision. My last job was at a small construction company that let me go because they lost a big contract. They seemed pretty vague about how long this employer verification process would take. Meanwhile my certifications from the last 3 weeks are just sitting there in pending status, and my savings are getting pretty thin. Has anyone been through this recently? How long did you have to wait after your eligibility interview before they made a decision? I'm worried my old boss might be hard to reach since he's always out at job sites.

I went through this in January. After my eligibility interview, it took about 8 business days for them to contact my employer and make a decision. If your employer doesn't respond within about 10 days, EDD will typically make a determination based solely on the information you provided in your interview. Make sure you certified for those weeks even though they're pending - they'll all get paid at once if you're approved.

•Thank you! That's really helpful to know. Did your payments switch from pending to paid automatically once they made the decision, or did you have to do something?

•3 weeks?! That's crazy long. Were you able to pay bills during that time or did you have to take out loans?

The employer verification process typically takes 7-14 days, but can be slower if your employer doesn't respond quickly. The good news is that if they approve your claim, you'll get all those pending weeks paid at once, including any weeks you certified for during the waiting period. If it goes beyond two weeks, I suggest calling EDD to check on the status. Just be aware their phone lines are extremely difficult to get through - you might want to try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helps you bypass the busy signals and connect with an EDD rep much faster. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km I was in the same situation last month and waiting was driving me crazy, but using that service saved me hours of redial frustration.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU GIVE UP!!!! I waited 6 WEEKS after my interview and had to call them every other day until someone finally fixed it. My employer NEVER responded and they still wouldn't move forward with my claim!!! It's absolutely RIDICULOUS how they treat people who are already struggling!!!

I'm actually going through the exact same situation right now! Had my interview last Thursday, and I'm also stuck in pending. The interviewer told me it could take 7-10 business days for them to contact my employer. I'm freaking out because my rent is due next week and I was counting on this money. Did your interviewer give you any indication of how they were leaning regarding your eligibility? Mine seemed pretty sympathetic but wouldn't commit to anything.

•The interviewer was super professional but didn't give me any hints about which way they were leaning. They just asked a bunch of questions about why I left my job and took detailed notes. Sounds like we're in the same boat with bills coming due! Keep me posted on your status and I'll do the same.

One thing I forgot to mention in my earlier comment - be sure to check your UI Online inbox daily. Sometimes they'll send you a request for additional documentation, and if you miss that deadline, it can delay your claim further or even result in a denial. The EDD notification emails sometimes go to spam, so logging in directly is the safest approach.

•That's a great tip! I'll make sure to check my UI Online inbox regularly. I've been obsessively checking my claim status but hadn't thought about possible messages.

wait are you talking about the eligibility interview or the appeal hearing? those are different things

•It was definitely an eligibility interview, not an appeal. I haven't been denied yet so there's nothing to appeal. This was the phone interview they scheduled when I first filed my claim.

I noticed someone mentioned this was a small construction company - if your employer doesn't have a dedicated HR department, it can sometimes take longer for EDD to get the verification they need. In my experience, once they make a determination, your status will change from pending to paid within 24-48 hours and the money will be on your Money Network card (or direct deposit) within 3 business days after that.

•You're right - it's a small company with maybe 15 employees total. No HR department at all. The owner handles everything himself, and he's not the most organized person. I'm getting worried he might miss EDD's call or not respond to their inquiry in time.

my friend told me that if your employer doesn't respond in 10 days EDD has to approve u automatically

•That's not exactly right. If the employer doesn't respond, EDD will make a determination based on the information provided by the claimant. This often results in approval, but it's not automatic - they still review your statements and other available information before deciding.

•That's awful! Have you tried contacting your state representative's office? I've heard they can sometimes help speed things up with EDD.

To answer your earlier question - yes, my payments switched from pending to paid automatically once they made their decision. I didn't have to do anything extra. The status change happened overnight, and I received an email notification. About two days later, the money was available on my card.
