EDD phone interview went smoothly - employer already responded - good sign?
Had my eligibility interview with EDD today after waiting almost 3 weeks! The interviewer was actually really pleasant (wasn't expecting that). She mentioned that my former employer had already submitted their response about my separation. She didn't tell me what they said but seemed satisfied with our conversation. Is it usually a good sign when they've already heard from the employer? Also, she asked if I've been able to certify for benefits while waiting. I said yes and have certified for 4 weeks already but all still show as pending. Anyone know how long after the interview until payments might get released if approved? Starting to worry about rent next month...

Generally speaking, it IS a good sign if they already have the employer's response during your interview. It means they can make a decision faster without having to wait for additional information. The fact that the interviewer asked about your certifications is also positive - they wouldn't bother asking if they were planning to disqualify you. After my interview, it took about 5 business days for my pending payments to switch to paid. But I've seen others get paid within 24-48 hours after a successful interview. Keep checking your UI Online portal daily.

•Thanks for this! That makes me feel a bit better. The interviewer didn't say anything negative or challenge anything I said, so maybe that's another good sign? I'll keep obsessively checking my portal every few hours lol.

•That's amazing! Really hoping for the same result. Did they tell you during the interview that you were approved or did you just have to wait and see?

I wouldn't get my hopes up too much. The EDD rep told me the same thing about my employer responding, then THREE WEEKS LATER I got a disqualification notice!!! Apparently my employer told them I was fired for misconduct (I WASN'T) and EDD just took their word for it. I had to file an appeal and the whole process took MONTHS to resolve. The system is rigged against workers!!!

•I'm sorry that happened to you, but most cases don't end up like that. If the OP's employer had said something negative, the interviewer would have asked more probing questions about the separation. The fact that the interview went smoothly suggests the employer didn't contest anything. OP - one thing I learned from my experience is that calling EDD directly after your interview can sometimes speed things up. If you haven't heard anything after 3-4 days, try to get an agent on the phone who can check the status and potentially release your pending payments. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an EDD rep when I was stuck in pending after my interview. Check out their video demo: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Got connected to an actual person who could help in under 10 minutes instead of calling for days.

•This is correct - the certification question is standard procedure during all eligibility interviews. However, the fact that the interviewer had the employer's response and conducted a brief interview without challenging the claimant's statements is generally positive. For the timeline: EDD is required to make a determination within 10 calendar days of completing the eligibility interview. In practice, simple cases where employer and employee statements align are often processed within 2-3 business days. If your employer contested your claim or provided contradictory information, the interview would typically be more extensive with specific questions about the discrepancies.

•Thank you for the clarification! That makes sense about the certification question being standard. The interview only lasted about 10 minutes and she didn't ask anything unexpected or challenge my statement about why I left the job. Hoping that's a good sign!

Did the interviewer tell you exactly what your employer said? That's really important because if they said you quit without good cause or were fired for misconduct, you'll probably be disqualified even if the interview seemed friendly.

•No, she didn't tell me what they said specifically. She just mentioned they had already responded and then asked me to explain why I separated from the employer. I told her I was laid off due to company restructuring (which is true). She didn't challenge this or ask for more details, just made some notes and moved on to confirming my contact information.

•That's a positive sign. If your employer had claimed misconduct or voluntary quit, the interviewer would be required to ask you specific questions about those allegations and give you an opportunity to respond. A brief, unchallenged discussion about a layoff strongly suggests your employer confirmed the same reason for separation.

Make sure you continue certifying every two weeks while you wait for a decision. Even if your payments are pending now, they'll all be released at once if approved. If you stop certifying, you'll have to go through additional steps to claim those weeks later.

•Yes, I've been certifying religiously every two weeks! I set calendar reminders so I don't forget. Just hope they approve soon because my savings are getting low.

I had the same thing happen last year. Wait about 3-5 days and if nothing changes try calling but be prepared to spend ALL DAY trying to reach someone. I finally got through after 43 calls! My issue was that even though the interview went well, the employee who conducted it forgot to update something in the system. Good luck!

Since everyone's sharing their timelines, mine was 2 business days from interview to payments being released. But this was after the interviewer explicitly told me at the end of our call that everything looked good and I should expect payment soon. If you're still stuck after a few days, I highly recommend using Claimyr to get through to an EDD representative. Regular calling is nearly impossible with how overloaded the phone lines are. When I used Claimyr (claimyr.com), I got connected right away rather than making 100+ calls myself. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

Sounds like you're in a good position! The fact that your interview was brief (only 10 minutes) and the interviewer didn't challenge your layoff explanation is definitely encouraging. When there are issues or discrepancies between what the employer and employee report, those interviews tend to be much longer with lots of follow-up questions. I had a similar experience - smooth interview, employer had already responded, and I got my pending payments released within 48 hours. The key thing is that if your employer had reported something negative like misconduct or voluntary quit, the interviewer would have been required to ask you specific questions about those allegations. Keep certifying every two weeks while you wait, and try to be patient for at least 3-5 business days. If nothing changes by then, definitely try calling EDD directly or using one of those callback services to check on the status. Fingers crossed you'll see those payments switch from pending to paid very soon!

•This is really helpful and reassuring! I'm new to this whole unemployment process and wasn't sure what to expect from the interview. The fact that mine was so brief (10 minutes) compared to what some others have described does seem like a positive indicator. I keep second-guessing myself wondering if I said something wrong, but based on everyone's feedback here it sounds like the interviewer would have pressed me more if there were red flags from my employer's response. I'll definitely keep certifying and try to be patient for the next few days. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences - it's making this stressful wait a bit more bearable knowing others have been through similar situations!

Hey Ethan! Your situation sounds really promising based on what you've described. I went through a similar experience about 6 months ago - had my eligibility interview, it was brief and straightforward, and the rep mentioned my employer had already responded. Like you, I was laid off due to company downsizing. The fact that your interview only lasted 10 minutes and the interviewer didn't drill you with follow-up questions is definitely a good sign. When I had friends who faced contested claims or misconduct allegations, their interviews were 30+ minutes with tons of detailed questions about specific incidents. Mine took exactly 3 business days from interview to seeing all my pending payments flip to "Paid" status. I'd been certifying for 5 weeks at that point, so getting that lump sum was such a relief! Just stay consistent with your bi-weekly certifications and try not to stress too much over the next few days. The combination of a cooperative employer response, brief interview, and no challenging questions really does suggest everything is aligned for approval. Hoping you get that good news soon - the rent stress is real!

•Thanks Paolo! This is exactly what I needed to hear. The waiting is definitely the hardest part, especially when you're watching your bank account dwindle. It's reassuring to know that others with similar situations (brief interview, employer already responded, no challenging questions) got approved within a few days. I keep refreshing my UI Online portal every couple hours hoping to see that status change from "Pending" to "Paid" - probably driving myself crazy but I can't help it! Your experience with getting 5 weeks of back pay all at once gives me hope that this will all work out. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your timeline and experience.

I'm going through almost the exact same situation right now! Had my EDD interview yesterday and it sounds very similar to yours - lasted about 12 minutes, interviewer was friendly, and she mentioned they already had my employer's response. I was also laid off due to company restructuring. The interviewer asked me the same questions about certifying for benefits while waiting. I've been pending for 3 weeks now on 6 certifications, so really hoping this gets resolved soon. Reading everyone's experiences here is giving me some hope that the brief, unchallenged interview is a positive sign. Did you get any sense from the interviewer about timing? Mine just said they'd process everything and I should keep checking my account. The waiting game is brutal when you're watching bills pile up! Keeping my fingers crossed for both of us that we see those payments switch to "Paid" in the next few days.

•Wow, our situations are incredibly similar! It's actually comforting to know someone else is going through the exact same thing right now. My interviewer also didn't give me any specific timeline - just said they'd "process everything" and to keep checking my account. The fact that both our interviews were brief (10-12 minutes) and both interviewers had already received employer responses seems really encouraging based on what others have shared here. Since we were both laid off for similar reasons (company restructuring/downsizing), hopefully our employers gave straightforward responses that align with what we told EDD. 6 weeks pending sounds rough - I'm stressed about my 4 weeks! But like others mentioned, getting that lump sum all at once when it finally gets approved should provide some relief. I'm definitely obsessively checking my portal multiple times a day too. Here's hoping we both see good news in the next few days! Keep me posted if your status changes - would love to hear some positive updates from someone in the same boat.

I'm in a very similar situation right now - just had my EDD interview this morning and it went almost exactly like yours! The rep was surprisingly pleasant (I was bracing for the worst based on horror stories I'd read), and she also mentioned that my former employer had already submitted their response. My interview was only about 8 minutes long, which after reading everyone's responses here seems like a really good sign. She asked about my separation (also a layoff due to budget cuts), confirmed my contact info, and asked about my certifications - all very straightforward with no pushback or follow-up questions. I've been certifying for 3 weeks so far with everything stuck in pending status. The financial stress is real - I'm down to my last $200 and rent is due in two weeks! But reading everyone's experiences here is giving me hope that the combination of a brief interview + employer already responding + no challenging questions usually leads to approval within a few days. Thanks for posting this - it's so helpful to hear from others going through the same process. The waiting and uncertainty is definitely the hardest part. Hoping we both get good news soon! I'll try to remember to update this thread if/when my status changes.

•Sofia, your situation sounds almost identical to mine and several others here! An 8-minute interview with no pushback is definitely encouraging. I'm really hoping all of us in similar situations get approved quickly - the financial stress while waiting is no joke. It's crazy how many people are going through this exact same experience right now with brief interviews and employers who have already responded. Based on what everyone's shared, it seems like when EDD has both sides of the story and they align (layoffs/restructuring), the decisions come pretty fast. $200 left is scary - I'm not much better off myself. But seeing people like Paolo get 5+ weeks of back pay all at once when approved gives me hope we'll get through this. Definitely keep us updated on your status! It would be great to hear some success stories from people in our exact situation.

Based on everything you've described, this really does sound like a positive outcome is coming your way! I went through this exact process about 8 months ago and had a very similar experience - brief interview (mine was 9 minutes), employer had already responded, and the rep was actually pleasant to deal with. The key indicator for me was that when there are issues or discrepancies, those interviews drag on much longer. Mine was also for a layoff due to company downsizing, and like yours, the interviewer didn't challenge my explanation at all. She just took notes and moved on. My timeline was 4 business days from interview to all pending payments switching to "Paid" status. I had been pending for about 3 weeks like you, so getting that back pay was such a relief! The fact that your employer proactively responded before your interview suggests they probably confirmed the layoff details you provided. Keep doing exactly what you're doing - certify every two weeks and try to stay patient for at least a few more business days. If nothing changes by early next week, definitely try calling EDD or using one of those callback services others mentioned. But honestly, based on your description and comparing it to my experience and others here, I'd be surprised if you don't see good news very soon. Hang in there!

•Lucas, this is incredibly reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same process! Your timeline of 4 business days gives me something concrete to hope for. I keep telling myself that if there were red flags from my employer's response, the interviewer would have grilled me much harder during the call. It's interesting how many of us have had these brief 8-10 minute interviews recently - seems like when the employer and employee stories align (especially for layoffs), EDD can process things pretty efficiently. The fact that multiple people here with similar experiences got approved within days is really encouraging. I think I'll give it until early next week before trying to call, but honestly just hearing all these success stories is helping me stay more optimistic. The financial stress is real but at least now I feel like there's light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for sharing your timeline and outcome - it really helps to know others have been in this exact situation and come out okay!
