EDD scheduling multiple eligibility interviews after each certification - normal or problem?
I'm really confused with the EDD interview process. I filed my claim in February, certified and had a phone eligibility interview about 3 weeks ago. The interviewer confirmed everything was fine with my work separation (laid off due to department restructuring), and I received my payment a few days later. Now I just certified again this week (same answers as before, nothing changed in my situation), but I got another interview notice scheduled for 2 weeks from now! My payment is pending and I'm guessing it won't release until after this new interview. Is it normal to have eligibility interviews EVERY time you certify? I thought once they determined you were eligible, you were good to go unless something changed? I really need this payment and waiting another 2 weeks is going to put me in a tough spot with bills. Should I try calling EDD to find out why they need another interview, or just wait for the scheduled call? Anyone have similar experiences?

No, it's definitely not normal to have interviews after every certification. Typically, once your eligibility is established, you should just be able to certify and receive payments without additional interviews. Something might have triggered a flag in their system. My guess is either: 1. You accidentally answered something differently on your certification that raised a flag 2. Your employer submitted new information 3. There's a glitch in their system (wouldn't be the first time) I'd recommend calling EDD to find out what's going on rather than waiting two weeks. They might be able to clear it up immediately and release your payment.

•Thank you! That's what I was afraid of. I double-checked my certification answers and I'm positive I answered everything the same way. I'll try calling tomorrow morning.

•Oh no! Did you eventually get it sorted out? I'm worried my former employer might be doing something similar, even though they told me the layoff was just budget cuts.

EDD is sooooo broken right now. They're still understaffed and their computer system is ancient. Multiple interviews is usually a sign that either you answered something that triggered their system OR there's a disagreement between what you reported and what your employer reported. Don't just wait around for 2 weeks!!! You need to get on the phone with them ASAP. Problem is getting through - I spent 3 days trying to reach someone and kept getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message before being disconnected. ARGH!!! You might want to check out this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they have a system that helps you get through to an EDD rep without spending hours redialing. Worked for me when I had a similar issue. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Good luck and keep us posted!!

•Yeah it's legit! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for days to get through. It basically keeps dialing for you until it connects. Saved me hours of frustration.

EDD claims specialist here. Having multiple consecutive eligibility interviews is uncommon but not unheard of. Here are the most likely reasons: 1. Your employer filed an appeal or contested your initial eligibility determination 2. There was an issue with wage verification that came up after your first payment 3. Something in your certification triggered an automatic review (even small inconsistencies can do this) 4. A quarterly review of your claim identified a potential issue I strongly recommend calling before your scheduled interview. The tier 1 rep might be able to see what triggered the new interview and possibly clear it without waiting. If not, they can at least tell you what documentation to have ready for your interview. Keep in mind that if you call, you'll want to do so early in the morning (8:00-8:30am) for the best chance of getting through. Be prepared for a long wait regardless.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'll definitely call first thing in the morning. Do you know if there's a specific department I should try to reach, or just the general EDD line?

•Start with the general line (1-800-300-5616). The tier 1 rep who answers should be able to see what's flagged on your account. If they can't resolve it, they can transfer you to a tier 2 specialist who handles eligibility issues. Make sure to mention you already had a successful eligibility interview and received payment previously.

I had something similar happen and it turned out there was a simple explanation. When I called (after trying for days to get through), the rep told me that my employer had submitted additional separation information after my first interview, which triggered a follow-up interview automatically. When I asked if my payment would be held until the interview, the rep was actually able to review the new information, confirm it didn't contradict my previous statements, and release my payment on the spot. The interview was still scheduled, but at least I got paid while waiting. It's definitely worth calling - worst case scenario they tell you to wait for the interview, best case they resolve it immediately and release your funds. But be prepared to spend a good chunk of time trying to get through to someone. I started calling right when they opened and still had to try multiple times.

•That gives me hope! I'll definitely call tomorrow morning when they open. Did you just use the main EDD number or is there a different one for payment issues?

•I used the main number (1-800-300-5616). Just make sure you're ready to explain your situation clearly and have your claim ID number handy. The less time they have to spend looking up your information, the more likely they are to help you right away.

•Yes! Sorry for not updating sooner. I finally got through to EDD this morning after trying for 2 days straight. Turns out my former employer submitted some additional information about my separation (even though nothing changed). The rep was able to check it against my file, said everything looked consistent with what I'd already told them, and released my payment! The interview is still scheduled but she said it's just a formality at this point and shouldn't affect future payments. Thanks everyone for your help!
