How long after ESD fact-finding interview for separation issue will I get a decision?
I just had my phone interview with ESD yesterday where they asked questions about why I left my job (my boss cut my hours from 40 to 15 without warning). The interviewer said they'd need to make a decision about my eligibility. Does anyone know how long this typically takes? The uncertainty is killing me since I've got rent due in 2 weeks. My online account just shows 'pending adjudication' with no timeline. Is this going to take forever?

The adjudication process for separation issues typically takes 2-4 weeks from the date of your fact-finding interview. Since you just had your interview yesterday, you're looking at probably 2-3 more weeks before you'll see a decision in your eServices account. Make sure you continue filing your weekly claims during this time, even though you won't receive payments until after the adjudication is complete. If approved, you'll get backpay for all eligible weeks you've claimed.

•2-4 WEEKS??? That's insane! My landlord isn't going to wait that long. Is there any way to speed this up?

it depend on how busy they are. my claim took 6 weeks to get decided last summer and my friend got his in like 10 days last month. its super random

•Yep this is true. And honestly, if your case is straightforward (like if your employer doesn't contest it) it can be much faster than if it's complicated. My last claim took 3 weeks but that was because my former employer tried to say I quit when I was actually laid off. That triggered a whole investigation thing.

I had a similar situation in March where my employer drastically reduced my hours. ESD took exactly 25 days to make a decision after my fact-finding interview. What really helped was using Claimyr to get through to an actual ESD agent after two weeks of waiting. I was getting desperate and regular calls weren't going through. The service connected me to an agent who was able to tell me the status of my adjudication and approximately when I could expect a decision. Saved me from so much anxiety! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3

•Is that service legit? Sounds too good to be true tbh. ESD phones are IMPOSSIBLE to get through on.

•It is legit. They basically keep calling for you until they get through, then connect you. Saved me hours of redial frustration. Talking to an actual person made all the difference in my case.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!!! I waited NINE WEEKS for my decision and they still got it WRONG. Then I had to wait ANOTHER 3 weeks for an appeal hearing. They don't care that people have bills and families to feed. They sit there taking their sweet time while we SUFFER. And good luck trying to call them - I tried 67 times in one day and couldn't get through!!!!

•I understand your frustration, but nine weeks is definitely not typical - that sounds like there might have been some unusual circumstances with your claim. For most standard separation issues (like the OP's reduced hours situation), decisions usually come through in 2-4 weeks, occasionally stretching to 5-6 weeks during very busy periods. I work with unemployment cases regularly, and while delays do happen, they're generally not as extreme as what you experienced.

Hey OP, just wanted to mention that while you're waiting, you might qualify for emergency assistance through DSHS or local community organizations. Most counties have rent assistance programs that can help while you're waiting on your unemployment decision. Might be worth looking into if you're worried about making rent.

•Thanks for this suggestion. I hadn't even thought about that. I'll check into DSHS tomorrow. Really hoping ESD makes a decision quickly though.

Just to add to my earlier comment - your situation (hours cut from 40 to 15) is actually pretty straightforward and should be a clear-cut case for approval. This is a classic example of what ESD calls a "substantial reduction in hours" which qualifies you for benefits even though you weren't completely laid off. The fact that your employer made this change without warning strengthens your case. While I can't promise anything, cases like yours tend to be decided more quickly than complex voluntary quit situations.

•That's really reassuring to hear. My boss was shocked when I filed for unemployment and kept saying I shouldn't qualify since I'm "still employed." But I can't pay my bills on 15 hours a week!

•Your boss is incorrect. WA state specifically allows for partial unemployment when your hours are substantially reduced. Keep filing your weekly claims and report any income from those 15 hours accurately. The system will automatically calculate your partial benefit amount.

my cousin works at esd and he said they're really backed up right now with claims so maybe expect the longer end of the timeframes people are mentioning. not trying to stress you out just being real

UPDATE: Just got my decision today - APPROVED!! It only took 8 days from my interview. Much faster than I expected after reading everyone's responses. Now I'm just waiting for the payments to hit my account. Thanks everyone for your help!

•That's great news! As I suspected, your straightforward case was processed quickly. The payments should appear in your account within 48 hours of the decision being made. Congratulations!
