EDD phone interview yesterday, told I'll get letter in mail - good or bad sign?
Just had my EDD eligibility interview over the phone yesterday. It lasted about 15 minutes, and the interviewer asked all about my job separation. I explained everything honestly about how the company downsized our department. At the end, she just said I'd get a letter in the mail with the decision. Didn't give me ANY hint if I was approved or denied! Is this the normal process? Does getting a letter instead of immediate approval mean bad news? I'm freaking out a bit because I really need these benefits to kick in soon. My savings are almost gone and rent is due next week!! Anyone know what this means?

Hey don't worry about it! I had my eligibility interview back in January and they told me the same thing. The letter in the mail is standard procedure - everyone gets one regardless of whether you're approved or denied. The EDD has to document their decision officially. Mine came about 5 days after the interview and I was approved! If you explained everything clearly and your reason for separation qualifies you for benefits, you should be fine. Waiting is definitely the hardest part though!

•Thanks for this! Did your online account update before you got the letter? I keep checking UI Online hoping to see something change from pending to paid...

This is 100% normal. The EDD representatives on the phone aren't authorized to tell you the decision during the interview. The determination has to go through their processing system, get reviewed, and then they send the official notice. The letter will explain their decision and your right to appeal if needed. My advice: Keep certifying for weeks if you're able to in the meantime. If approved, they'll process payments for all certified weeks. Look for any changes in your UI Online account - sometimes that updates before the letter arrives.

•Also want to add that the letters can take 7-10 business days to arrive, so don't panic if it doesn't come right away. The mail system EDD uses is notoriously slow.

EVERYONE gets the letter in the mail! It's the standard bureaucratic process. They NEVER tell you the decision over the phone. What's ridiculous is they could just update your UI Online account immediately but NOOOOO they have to waste paper and make us wait days or sometimes WEEKS for a stupid letter. The whole system is designed to make it as stressful as possible! And don't think getting the letter means you're done either! Even if you're approved, you'll probably have a million other issues to deal with. My payment got stuck in pending for 3 weeks AFTER I was approved. The EDD is a nightmare!!!

•Ugh that sounds terrible! Did you ever figure out why your payment was stuck in pending even after approval? I'm worried about the same thing happening.

•Had to call them 47 TIMES before I got through to someone who could actually help. Each rep tells you something different. Complete chaos over there!

Im wondering if u remember what kind of questions they asked you in the interview? I have mine next week and im super nervous about it!! Did they try to trip you up or anything??

•They mostly asked about why I left my job (was it voluntary or was I laid off), dates of employment, my final wages, if I received any severance, and if I've been looking for work. Just be honest and have any documentation ready just in case. The interviewer was actually pretty nice, not trying to trick me or anything.

If you're having trouble reaching EDD to check on your claim status after getting that letter, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. I was in the same boat last month - had my interview, got my approval letter, but then my payments got stuck and I couldn't get through on the phone. Claimyr connected me with an EDD rep in about 20 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km and their website is claimyr.com. Saved me a ton of stress and I got my payments released the same day.

Let me break down the EDD eligibility interview process for clarity: 1. The phone interview is for gathering information about your claim 2. The interviewer cannot make an on-the-spot decision - they need to review everything 3. Everyone receives a determination letter, regardless of the decision 4. The letter typically arrives within 7-10 business days 5. Your UI Online account may update before the letter arrives 6. If approved, any weeks you've already certified will move to paid status Based on what you've described about your layoff due to downsizing, this sounds like a qualifying separation, so try not to worry too much. Just keep certifying for benefits each week while you wait.

•Thank you for laying it out so clearly! This is really helpful. I'll keep certifying and checking my online account while I wait for the letter.

That's awesome news Aaron! 🎉 So happy to hear you got approved. Your story gives me hope - I'm still waiting for my letter after my interview last week. The waiting is definitely nerve-wracking but seeing success stories like yours helps keep me positive. Thanks for updating us!

•Thanks for the positive vibes! I totally understand that nerve-wracking feeling while waiting. Just try to stay busy and keep checking your UI Online account - that's where I first saw the status change before my letter even arrived. Fingers crossed your letter comes soon with good news! 🤞

Congrats Aaron! 🎉 This is such great news and really helpful for others going through the same process. The waiting period after that interview is honestly the worst part - you did great sticking it out. Your experience shows that downsizing/layoffs really do qualify for benefits when you're honest about the circumstances. Thanks for coming back to update everyone, it means a lot to see these success stories in the community!

•Absolutely agree! Aaron's story is exactly what this community needs more of - real experiences with positive outcomes. I'm new here but dealing with a similar situation (waiting for my determination letter after an interview last Friday). Reading through all these responses has been so reassuring. It's clear that getting "just wait for the letter" really is standard procedure and not a bad sign. Thanks Aaron for following up with the good news, and thanks to everyone else who shared their experiences too!

This whole thread is so encouraging! I just went through my EDD interview yesterday and came here looking for exactly this kind of information. Like Aaron, my interviewer was professional but gave zero hints about the outcome - just said to wait for the letter. It's reassuring to see that this really is standard procedure and that downsizing cases like ours typically get approved. For anyone else in this situation: based on what I'm reading here, the key things seem to be 1) keep certifying while you wait, 2) check your UI Online account regularly since it updates before the letter arrives, and 3) don't panic if the letter takes up to 10 business days. Aaron, thanks so much for updating with your approval - stories like yours give the rest of us hope while we're in limbo! 🙏

•Anna, you're so right about those key takeaways! I'm also new to this community but have been lurking and reading everything I can about the EDD process. Your summary is spot-on and really helpful for newcomers like me. I had my interview two days ago and was completely stressed about the "wait for the letter" response, but this thread has been a lifesaver. It's amazing how much better you feel when you realize that literally everyone gets the same response regardless of the outcome. Thanks Aaron for sharing your success story - it gives all of us hope that the system actually does work when you're honest and qualify for benefits! 🤞

Just wanted to chime in as someone who's been through this process twice (unfortunately got laid off again during the pandemic). The waiting period after the EDD interview is absolutely brutal - I remember checking my mailbox multiple times a day! But Aaron's experience is really typical. Both times I went through this, the interviewer gave me the same neutral "you'll get a letter" response, and both times I was approved within a week. One tip I'd add: if you're really anxious about the timeline, you can sometimes call the EDD customer service line about 5-7 days after your interview to check if a determination has been made. They won't tell you the decision over the phone, but they can at least confirm if it's been processed and mailed. Saves you from wondering if your letter got lost in the mail! Congrats again Aaron - your story will definitely help calm some nerves for others going through this stressful process! 🎉

•Connor, that's a really helpful tip about calling after 5-7 days to check if the determination has been processed! I didn't know you could do that. I'm new to this whole EDD process (just filed my claim last week) and honestly feeling pretty overwhelmed by all the waiting and uncertainty. This entire thread has been incredibly reassuring though - it's so valuable to hear from people like you and Aaron who've actually been through this successfully. The fact that you went through it twice and got approved both times really shows that the system does work when you legitimately qualify. Thanks for sharing that practical advice! 🙏

This thread has been such a lifesaver! I just stumbled across this community while frantically googling "EDD interview letter good or bad sign" after my phone interview this morning. Like Aaron, I got the same neutral response about waiting for a letter in the mail, and I was convinced it meant bad news. Reading everyone's experiences here has totally calmed my nerves - it's so reassuring to know this is just standard procedure and not a reflection of the decision. Aaron, congratulations on your approval! Your timeline gives me hope since I'm in a very similar situation (also laid off due to company downsizing). For anyone else waiting: this community seems like an amazing resource. I'm definitely bookmarking this thread and will try to pay it forward by updating with my own results when the letter comes. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences! 🤞

•Freya, I'm so glad this thread helped calm your nerves! I just joined this community yesterday and found myself in the exact same boat - googling frantically after my EDD interview and stumbling across Aaron's post. It's incredible how much stress we put ourselves through when really this "wait for the letter" response is just their standard protocol. I had my interview three days ago (also downsizing situation) and was absolutely convinced the neutral response meant rejection. But reading through everyone's experiences here, especially seeing Aaron's successful outcome, has been such a relief. This community really is a goldmine of real-world EDD experiences. Definitely planning to update when my letter arrives too - we need more success stories like Aaron's to help future folks going through this stressful process! 🙏

Just wanted to add my voice to this incredibly helpful thread! I'm new to this community and found Aaron's post while desperately searching for answers after my EDD interview yesterday. Like so many others here, I got the standard "you'll receive a letter in the mail" response and immediately spiraled into worst-case-scenario thinking. Reading through everyone's experiences has been such a relief - it's amazing how this one thread captures the exact anxiety we all go through during this process! Aaron, huge congratulations on your approval! 🎉 Your willingness to come back and update everyone really shows what makes this community special. For anyone else currently in the waiting phase: based on all the experiences shared here, it seems like the key is to remember that EVERYONE gets the same neutral response regardless of outcome, keep certifying while you wait, and check your UI Online account regularly. The waiting is brutal, but these stories give me so much hope that honest cases like layoffs due to downsizing typically work out. I'll definitely update when my letter arrives - this community deserves more success stories to help calm future nerves! Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences. 🙏

•Sofia, your message really resonates with me! I literally just joined this community after finding this thread through a Google search about EDD interviews. Had my phone interview this afternoon and got the exact same "wait for the letter" response that everyone here describes. I was immediately convinced it was bad news until I read through all these experiences. It's so comforting to see that this neutral response is genuinely just their standard procedure - not a hint about the outcome at all! Aaron's success story and everyone else sharing their timelines has been incredibly reassuring. I'm also in a downsizing situation, so seeing that these cases typically get approved when you're honest about the circumstances gives me real hope. Definitely planning to follow your lead and update when my letter comes. This community is amazing for providing real experiences instead of just generic EDD website info! 🤞

Just want to echo what everyone else is saying - this thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm also new to this community and found it while searching for EDD interview experiences. Had my phone call yesterday morning and got the same "you'll receive a letter" response that everyone describes. Initially panicked thinking it meant bad news, but reading through all these real experiences has been so reassuring. Aaron, congratulations on your approval! 🎉 It's so great that you came back to update everyone - that kind of follow-through really makes this community valuable. Your timeline (letter in about 4 days, UI Online updating around the same time) gives me a concrete expectation of what to look for. For anyone else currently waiting: the consensus here seems to be that the neutral phone response is 100% standard procedure, not a reflection of the actual decision. The fact that so many people with legitimate layoff situations have gotten approved after the same experience is really encouraging. I'm also dealing with a company downsizing situation, so seeing these success stories gives me hope that honest, qualifying cases do get approved when you explain everything clearly. Will definitely update when my letter arrives to keep this chain of helpful experiences going! Thanks to everyone who shared their stories. 🙏

•Freya, I'm so glad this thread found you too! I literally just discovered this community about an hour ago after going down the same Google rabbit hole following my EDD interview this morning. Got the exact same "wait for the letter" response and immediately thought the worst until I started reading everyone's experiences here. It's incredible how much anxiety we put ourselves through when really this is just their standard operating procedure! Aaron's success story and the detailed timeline breakdowns from everyone else have been such a lifesaver. I'm also dealing with a downsizing situation (tech company layoffs), so seeing all these similar cases get approved when people are honest and qualify gives me real confidence. This community is amazing - actual real-world experiences instead of confusing official EDD website jargon! Definitely planning to update when my letter comes to keep this helpful chain going. Thanks to Aaron and everyone else for sharing! 🤞
