EDD sent me a message about a 'patent' after interview - am I approved for benefits?

Hey everyone, just had my EDD eligibility interview yesterday and the interviewer told me I'd know about my claim status by Tuesday at the latest. This morning I received an email notification saying I had a new message in my UI Online account. When I checked, it mentioned something about being 'issued a patent' which makes absolutely no sense to me. Does this mean my claim was approved? Or is this some weird EDD terminology I don't understand? I'm completely lost about what happens next. If I am approved, should I be expecting a check in the mail or a debit card? Do I need to do something else first? This is my first time filing for unemployment and the whole process is so confusing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

lol its not a 'patent' its a 'payment' 😂 EDD's messaging system is notorious for typos and weird autocorrect stuff. Yes that means ur approved! congrats! they'll send you a Money Network debit card in the mail if this is ur first time. takes about 7-10 days to arrive.

OMG that makes so much more sense! Thank you! Do I need to activate the card when it arrives or will it just work?

Actually, you should double-check that. EDD doesn't typically use the term "patent" anywhere in their communications. Log back into your UI Online account and check your claim status directly. Look under "Claim History" and see if it shows "Paid" for any weeks. Also check under "Notifications" for any messages about disqualification or approval. Don't assume anything until you see the actual status change or payment information.

I just checked and you're right - it actually says 'payment' not 'patent'. Must have misread it in my panic! The status shows 'paid' for last week. Such a relief!

Glad to hear your claim was approved! For the debit card - yes, you'll need to activate it when it arrives. It comes from "Money Network" (not labeled as EDD), so watch for that in your mail and don't accidentally throw it away thinking it's junk mail. Here's what happens next: 1. Your Money Network card should arrive in 7-10 business days 2. You'll need to activate it by phone or online 3. You MUST continue certifying for benefits every two weeks, even while waiting for the card 4. You can set up direct deposit later if you prefer that over the card If you want to check your payment status, go to UI Online and look at your payment history. It will show if the payment has been issued and for how much.

This is not always accurate! My card took TWENTY THREE days to arrive last year. EDD is soooo behind on everything. The worst part is you cant even call them to check status because you'll never get through!!!

when i got my approvel last month i thought the same thing lol. but ya its just how edd says payment. btw dont forget to certify every 2 weeks or theyll stop the payments!! i learned that the hard way

Thanks for the reminder! I've set calendar alerts so I don't forget to certify.

I had the EXACT same confusion last year! The EDD system is TERRIBLE with the most confusing messages ever. I still have nightmares about trying to understand what they're telling me. Did anyone else notice how they randomly capitalize words in their messages too? Like "You have been APPROVED for benefits" or "Your CERTIFICATION has been received." So weird.

omg yes!! and the random bold text in emails. their whole system feels like it was designed in 1995 and never updated lol

One more important thing - once you get your Money Network card, set up account alerts right away. There's been a lot of fraud with these cards. Log into the Money Network website after activating and set up text/email alerts for any transactions. Also, consider transferring your funds to your personal bank account rather than keeping large amounts on the card.

That's really good advice, thank you! I'll definitely set up those alerts and transfers when I get the card.

I just finished dealing with EDD last month after my job at the hospital ended. Just want to say it gets easier! The first payment is always the most confusing part. Make sure you answer the certification questions correctly every two weeks - especially the "did you look for work" question. You have to say yes and be able to list at least 3 job search activities per week if they ask for details later.

Thanks for the encouragement! I've been keeping a detailed job search log so I should be covered for the work search requirements.
