Back to California Unemployment

Daniel Rogers

How will I know if I'm approved for unemployment with California EDD?

So I filed my initial claim with California EDD about two weeks ago and I genuinely have no idea what happens next or how I'll even know if I got approved. Like, do they send a letter? Do I check something online? Do they call me? I'm a first-timer at this whole unemployment thing — I worked in hospitality for six years, got laid off when the restaurant I managed shut down, and I've never had to deal with EDD before in my life. I set up my UI Online account when I filed but it just shows 'pending' and I don't really know what that means. A coworker told me I should start filing weekly certifications right away even if I haven't been approved yet, which I did, but I still feel totally in the dark about what's actually going on with my claim. Does anyone know the actual process for how California EDD notifies you when your claim is approved? Is there a specific status change I should be watching for on UI Online? And what does it mean if it stays in 'pending' for a long time — does that mean there's a problem?

Good news — EDD does communicate approval in a few different ways and you can also track it yourself. Here's what to look for: First, check your UI Online account regularly. When your claim is approved, your claim status will change from 'pending' to something like 'active' or you'll see your benefit year established with a weekly benefit amount listed. That's usually the first sign things are moving. Second, watch your mail. EDD will send a 'Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award' (DE 429Z) by mail that shows your weekly benefit amount and the total award amount for your benefit year. This is your official approval letter basically. Third, if you set up a debit card (the EDD prepaid debit card through Bank of America), you'll receive that in the mail before or around the time payments start hitting — usually within 7-10 business days of approval. Keep filing those weekly certifications your coworker mentioned — that's absolutely the right move. Even during a pending period, you need to certify every two weeks to stay current, otherwise you could lose out on back payments.

Oh wow thank you this is exactly what I needed. So the UI Online status changing is usually the first thing that happens? I've been checking my email obsessively thinking they'd email me but sounds like it's more the portal and physical mail?

0 coins

Exactly right — EDD isn't big on email notifications unfortunately. The UI Online dashboard and physical mail are your two main channels. You can also set up text alerts through UI Online for some notifications but the detailed stuff comes by mail.

the debit card thing threw me off too when i first filed. i got the card before i even knew i was approved lol. felt weird activating a card for money i didn't know i was getting yet

0 coins

Welcome to the EDD confusion club lol. I went through this exact same situation eight months ago — first time filing, had no idea what was happening with my claim status. One thing I'll add to what the person above said: the 'pending' status can mean a few different things. Sometimes it just means they're processing your claim normally (standard 3-5 week processing time), but other times it means your claim got flagged for adjudication which is a whole other situation where EDD needs to verify something before approving you. If your pending status doesn't change after about 3-4 weeks, I'd strongly recommend trying to reach an actual EDD agent to find out what's going on. The problem is getting through to EDD by phone is genuinely brutal — I spent like two full days trying to reach someone and kept getting the 'high call volume' message and getting hung up on. What finally worked for me was using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). It basically handles the hold time for you and connects you to an EDD agent when one becomes available. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 — I was skeptical at first but it got me connected to an actual human who could look at my claim and tell me exactly what was going on.

0 coins

Wait so 'pending' and 'adjudication' are different things? I don't see the word adjudication anywhere on my account, just pending. Is that a good sign?

0 coins

Yeah they're different. 'Pending' is more of a general processing status. 'Adjudication' is when EDD has a specific question or issue with your claim — like if there's a question about why you separated from your employer or whether you're available for work. If your account just says pending with nothing flagged, you're probably just in the normal processing queue which is a better situation to be in.

0 coins

THIS. The phone situation with EDD is absolutely maddening. I don't care what anyone says, trying to call them through normal means is a waste of your entire day. Claimyr saved me probably 6+ hours of my life when I needed to talk to someone about my claim status.

0 coins

just chiming in — yes keep doing those weekly certs no matter what!! i stopped doing them for two weeks thinking i should wait til i was approved and i lost those payments forever basically. EDD wouldn't back pay me for weeks i didn't certify even though my claim was eventually approved. learn from my mistake

0 coins

Oh no that's terrifying, thank you for the warning. I've been certifying every two weeks like clockwork since I filed.

0 coins

good good. and make sure you're answering the job search questions honestly — they want you to list 3 job search activities per week in California now. if you're not doing that they can disqualify you later

0 coins

Wait is it 3 per week or 3 per certification period? I always thought it was 3 per week but my friend told me something different

0 coins

It's 3 job search activities per week in California. Each certification period covers 2 weeks, so you should have 6 total job search contacts/activities logged when you certify. Make sure you're keeping a record of them too — EDD can audit your job search activities.

honestly the approval process is so opaque its insane. i filed, waited almost 5 weeks, nothing changed on my portal, no mail, nothing. then one day i just randomly had money on my debit card with zero explanation. like ok cool i guess i'm approved?? would've been nice to know what was happening during those 5 weeks though

0 coins

5 weeks with no communication at all?? that sounds so stressful

0 coins

it really was. i was calling every single day getting nowhere. eventually the money just appeared. the system is a joke honestly

0 coins

Same thing happened to my sister in law. No letter, no status update she could understand, money just appeared on the card. She only realized she was approved when she checked her card balance.

I want to add some clarity here because there's some good info in this thread but also some gaps. The official California EDD approval notification process works like this: 1. UI Online status: When approved, you'll see your Weekly Benefit Amount (WBA) displayed on your account dashboard. This is one of the clearest indicators. 2. DE 429Z Notice: This is the formal 'Notice of UI Award' mailed to your address on file. It shows your benefit year dates, weekly benefit amount, and the maximum total benefit you can receive. This is EDD's official approval notification. 3. First payment: Once approved and certifications are processed, your first payment is typically issued within 2-3 weeks of approval. It will load onto your EDD prepaid card or deposit to your bank account if you set up direct deposit. Important nuance: An 'approved' claim means EDD has determined you're eligible based on your wages and job separation. But each weekly certification is also reviewed, so it's possible to have an approved claim but have a specific week's certification questioned or held. If you've been in 'pending' for more than 3 weeks with no movement, there may be an unresolved issue that isn't clearly flagged in your portal — that's worth investigating by contacting EDD directly.

0 coins

This is really helpful and organized, thank you. I'm at two weeks pending right now so I'll give it one more week and then try to contact them if nothing changes.

0 coins

the DE 429Z letter is real — i remember getting that and finally feeling like ok this is official. though mine took like 10 days to arrive after my portal updated

0 coins

direct deposit is so much better than the debit card btw if you haven't set it up yet. you can do it through UI Online under payment options

0 coins

Can I ask a dumb question — when it says 'benefit year' what does that mean exactly? Like my approval is only good for a year? What happens after a year if I'm still unemployed?

0 coins

Not a dumb question at all. Your benefit year is a 12-month period that starts when you file your claim. Within that year, you have access to your maximum benefit amount (which is 26 weeks worth of your weekly benefit amount in California under normal circumstances). Once your benefit year ends, if you've exhausted your benefits or need to file again, you'd file a new claim. The year isn't about how long you have to find work — it's the window in which you can access those specific benefits.

0 coins

oh ok that makes more sense. so i have up to 26 weeks of payments available within that 12 month window. got it. thanks

0 coins

Exactly. And you only get paid for weeks you actually certify and are eligible for — so if you find work parttime or fulltime during your benefit year, you'd stop certifying or report those wages, and those unclaimed weeks would basically just... sit there unused.

0 coins

The thing that really confused me when i first got approved was the difference between my claim being approved vs my WEEKS being approved. like EDD can approve your overall claim (you qualify for UI based on your wages/separation) but then each individual week you certify still gets reviewed and can be flagged separately. i had one random week that got held for review even though my overall claim was fine. took an extra 10 days to get that week's payment

0 coins

I had no idea that was even a thing. So every single week I certify could potentially get reviewed individually?

0 coins

yep basically. usually they just process and pay automatically. but if you answer a question in a way that triggers a review — like if you report earnings, or say you weren't available for work one day, or something seems inconsistent — that specific week can get flagged independently of your overall claim status

0 coins

This is an important distinction. The initial claim approval establishes your eligibility. But each certification period is essentially a separate question of: were you eligible THAT week? Earning income, refusing work, being unavailable, not conducting job searches — any of these in a given week can put that week's payment on hold even if your claim overall is in good standing.

0 coins

ugh reading this thread is bringing back all my EDD trauma from last year lol. the waiting and not knowing is the worst part. i remember just refreshing my UI Online like 15 times a day hoping the status would change

0 coins

This is literally me right now. Refresh refresh refresh.

0 coins

hang in there it does eventually resolve. just make sure your contact info and mailing address are 100% accurate in your profile because if EDD sends you a notice and it goes to a wrong address that can really mess things up

0 coins

same, i was obsessively checking. and then my approval came on a random tuesday afternoon while i was at the grocery store. anticlimactic but such a relief

0 coins

Something nobody mentioned yet — if EDD needs additional information from you before they can approve your claim, they might send you a form by mail OR they might try to call you for a phone interview. The phone interview thing is important because a lot of people miss those calls and then their claim just sits there. EDD calling you will show up from a restricted or unknown number sometimes. If you miss the call, there are instructions on your UI Online account for how to reschedule but the process is annoying. Check your 'Notices' section in UI Online regularly — that's where they post any requests for information or forms they need from you.

0 coins

Oh I didn't even know there was a Notices section! Going to check that right now actually.

0 coins

yes! click on 'inbox' or 'messages' depending on your portal version — EDD posts official notices there including any requests for info. super important to check regularly

0 coins

the phone interview thing is SO real. my roommate missed his EDD interview call twice and his claim got put into adjudication for like 6 weeks because of it. they don't make it easy to reschedule either

0 coins

just wanted to say this thread is really helpful, im in almost the exact same situation as OP — laid off two weeks ago, first time filing, no idea whats going on with my claim. bookmarking this whole thread

0 coins

good luck to you!! we're in the same boat. hoping we both get approved soon

0 coins

Good luck to both of you. Just keep certifying on time and make sure your UI Online account info is accurate. Most first-time claims without complications do get processed — the waiting is the hardest part but the system does work more often than not.

0 coins

I want to be real with everyone in this thread — if your claim stays in pending for more than 3-4 weeks and you can't get any information through UI Online, you NEED to talk to an actual EDD agent. The portal doesn't always show you when something is actually wrong with your claim. I had an issue that was silently holding my payments that I would have never known about if I hadn't pushed to speak to someone. The problem is EDD phones are a nightmare. I tried for a week straight calling at 8am when they open, calling redial after redial, nothing. A friend told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) — there's a demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. Basically it gets you through to an EDD agent without you having to sit on hold for hours. It worked for me and I finally found out there was a flag on my claim that wasn't showing up anywhere in my portal.

0 coins

This is good to know. What kind of flag was on your claim if you don't mind me asking?

0 coins

My former employer had filed a response disputing the reason for my separation — said I quit voluntarily when actually I was laid off. That triggered an adjudication hold. The agent I finally reached was able to tell me exactly what was going on and what documents I needed to submit to resolve it. Never would have known without talking to a human.

0 coins

ugh employers doing that is so shady. they dispute the claim to avoid their unemployment insurance rates going up right? happened to my neighbor too

0 coins

Quick tip that helped me: set up your EDD prepaid card AND set up direct deposit through UI Online. Don't just rely on one. I set up direct deposit but there was a glitch and my first payment actually went to the card anyway. Having both set up means you're covered either way and you'll check both when looking for payments.

0 coins

Oh interesting, I didn't realize you could have both set up at the same time

0 coins

well technically you designate one as your payment method, but i recommend having the card activated and the direct deposit set up so you can switch easily if needed. the card takes a week or two to arrive by mail so activate it as soon as you get it even if you prefer direct deposit

0 coins

activating the card the moment it arrives is good advice. also check your mailing address in UI Online and make sure it matches where you actually live — sounds obvious but people move and forget to update it

0 coins

One more thing worth knowing: your first payment after approval often covers MULTIPLE weeks at once because of the waiting period and the time your certifications have been stacking up. So don't freak out if you see a larger than expected deposit — it's probably just catching up on all the weeks you certified while pending. California eliminated the one-week waiting period a while back so you should be paid for your very first week of eligibility. But depending on how long processing takes, you might get 3-4 weeks of payments all at once in your first deposit.

0 coins

Ok that's actually really reassuring! So if I've been certifying for 3 weeks while pending and get approved, I'd get 3 weeks of payments at once basically?

0 coins

Exactly. As long as you certified on time each period and were eligible during those weeks, yes — they'd back pay all those weeks in one payment. That first deposit can be surprising in a good way.

0 coins

oh wow i didn't know california got rid of the waiting week. my family member filed in like 2019 and had to wait a week with no pay at the start. good to know that changed

0 coins

does anyone know if you get notified when individual weekly certifications are PROCESSED vs when they're just received? like I can see my certification was submitted but I can't tell if it's been processed yet

0 coins

In UI Online you can check the 'Payment Activity' section which shows the status of each certification period. It will show statuses like 'Pending,' 'Issued,' or sometimes 'In Progress.' 'Issued' means the payment has been sent to your card or account. The timing between 'submitted' and 'issued' is usually 2-4 business days under normal circumstances once your claim is approved.

0 coins

ahh I didn't realize payment activity was a separate section from the main claim status. checking it now, thank you

0 coins

yeah the UI Online interface is not the most intuitive. the main dashboard shows your overall claim status but the Payment Activity section is where you see the actual week-by-week breakdown. worth bookmarking that specific page

0 coins

Another question if anyone knows — what if i get approved but the weekly benefit amount seems wrong? like lower than I expected based on my wages? Is there a way to dispute that?

0 coins

Yes, you can request a wage audit or appeal the benefit determination if you believe your WBA was calculated incorrectly. Your DE 429Z award notice will show which quarters of wages EDD used to calculate your benefit. If wages are missing or incorrect — for example if an employer didn't report your wages accurately — you can contact EDD with your W-2s and pay stubs to have it corrected. There's also a formal appeal process through the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board (CUIAB) if needed.

0 coins

ok good to know. i'm just worried because my hours fluctuated a lot and some quarters i made more than others. hoping they used my highest earning quarters

0 coins

EDD uses your base period earnings — the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed. They look at the total wages across that period. It's not just the highest quarter but all four quarters factor in. If you had one really high earning quarter it helps but they average it out in their formula.

0 coins

I just want to validate the OP's stress because honestly the first time going through this is SO overwhelming. I remember feeling like I was doing everything wrong and was going to get denied for some technicality. The uncertainty is brutal especially when you have bills coming due. For what it's worth — most straightforward layoffs with consistent work history DO get approved. The scary cases are usually when there's a dispute about the reason for separation, a question about availability for work, or wage reporting issues. If you were clearly laid off and have been certifying correctly, you're probably fine and just waiting in the queue.

0 coins

Thank you for saying this, it genuinely helps. I was laid off very clearly (restaurant closed permanently, everyone was let go) so I'm hoping that's a clean separation with no disputes possible.

0 coins

A business closure is honestly one of the cleanest claim types — there's really nothing for your former employer to dispute. You should be in good shape. Just keep certifying and hang tight.

0 coins

100% agree. business closure layoffs almost never get disputed or adjudicated. you're very likely just in the normal processing queue. deep breaths

UPDATE FOR OP: not sure if you're still following this thread but wanted to share — I was in a similar situation (first time filing, pending for weeks, no idea what was happening) and my claim just approved today after 26 days pending. Got the award notice posted in my UI Online inbox and will get the mail version soon. First payment should hit within a few days. Just wanted to give a data point that normal processing really does take this long sometimes and doesn't mean anything is wrong

0 coins

This is so helpful to hear, thank you!! I'm still following and still pending at day 18 so you're giving me hope. Congrats on your approval!!

0 coins

hang in there! if you hit day 30 with no movement I'd try to reach EDD directly to check on it. but 18 days is still within normal range especially for new claims

0 coins

congrats on the approval!! and yeah this thread has been super informative for those of us who are new to this whole process

0 coins

Late addition but wanted to mention — if your claim ends up in adjudication (which OP's probably isn't but just in case), talking to an actual EDD agent can speed things up significantly. The portal often doesn't tell you what specific issue is being adjudicated or what documentation would resolve it. An agent can look at your claim notes and tell you exactly what EDD needs from you. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) when I was stuck in adjudication because I couldn't get through to EDD any other way. The demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 explains how it works. Within a few days of submitting the documentation the agent told me to submit, my adjudication was resolved. Definitely worth it if you ever find yourself stuck.

0 coins

Good to know as a backup plan. Hopefully I won't need it but bookmarking just in case my situation drags on.

0 coins

second this. i was in adjudication for almost 7 weeks before i was able to talk to someone and get clarity on what was actually holding my claim. the portal just said 'pending' the entire time. zero helpful information

0 coins

adjudication is a black hole honestly. getting a human on the phone is the only way to actually understand what's happening with your specific claim

0 coins

One thing I never see mentioned: after you get approved, keep the award letter (DE 429Z) somewhere safe. You might need it if you ever need to verify your benefit amounts, if there's ever a question about your claim history, or if you need to apply for any programs that ask about your unemployment benefits. I threw mine out and later needed it and had to track down the information another way.

0 coins

Good point. You can also access your notices digitally through UI Online inbox if you ever lose the paper version — they stay archived in there.

0 coins

oh great, didn't realize they stayed in the online archive. that's reassuring

0 coins

Filing this tip away, thank you! Going to keep all my EDD paperwork in a folder once things start arriving.
