How to file weekly unemployment claim with California EDD - step by step

I just got approved for unemployment last week and I'm completely lost on the weekly claim process. My award letter said I need to start filing but the California EDD website is confusing me. I log into UI Online and I see a bunch of options but nothing that obviously says 'file weekly claim here.' I've been a restaurant manager for 11 years and this is literally the first time I've had to deal with EDD so I have zero clue what I'm doing. I asked my cousin who was on unemployment a couple years ago but she said the website looks completely different from when she used it. Do I need to wait for a specific day to file? Can I file early? What happens if I miss a week? I don't want to mess anything up and delay my payments even more. Also I'm not sure what to put for the job search section - do I actually have to apply to places every single week to get my benefits? Any help walking me through how to file weekly unemployment claim would be really appreciated, I'm stressed out and just want to make sure I get paid.

Welcome to the EDD world - confusing at first but once you do it a couple times it becomes second nature. Here's a breakdown of how to file weekly claim in UI Online: First, your 'benefit week' runs Sunday through Saturday. You can certify starting the Sunday AFTER your week ends, and you have until the following Saturday to submit it. So you're filing a claim for the previous week, not the current one. To actually do it: log into UI Online at eapply.edd.ca.gov, go to 'Certify for Benefits' on your homepage dashboard. It'll ask you a series of questions about that week - whether you worked, how much you earned, if you were available and able to work, actively looking for work, etc. For the job search questions - yes, California requires you to conduct job search activities every week you claim benefits. Right now the requirement is typically 3 job search activities per week. This can include applying for jobs, attending a job fair, creating/updating your resume, or registering on CalJOBS. Keep a log of everything because EDD can audit you.

Thank you so much! So I click 'Certify for Benefits' - I was clicking around in the wrong section completely. One more question, when it asks if I worked during the week, does part-time work disqualify me or do I still get something?

0 coins

Part-time work doesn't automatically disqualify you. You report your gross earnings and EDD will calculate a reduced benefit payment. California has an earnings disregard formula so you don't lose dollar for dollar. Just always report honestly - never hide earnings, the penalties for fraud are severe.

This is the most helpful explanation I've seen on here, saving this thread

One thing I wish someone had told me when I first started - the system is pretty strict about the filing window. If you miss your window to certify (that Saturday deadline), your claim doesn't just carry over. You'll have to call EDD or submit a late claim certification which can delay your payment significantly. Set a calendar reminder every week, I do mine every Sunday morning right after I wake up.

0 coins

Oh wow I did NOT know that, setting a reminder right now. Does it send you any email or text reminders?

0 coins

They do have a notification option in your UI Online account settings. Go to profile settings and enable email notifications. It should send you a reminder when your certification window opens. Still set your own reminder though, EDD systems can be glitchy.

0 coins

I missed my window twice in my first month and had to call about it. The calls took forever to get through on. Stressful situation.

Since you mentioned calling EDD if something goes wrong - I'll drop this here early because it's saved me so much headache. Getting through to an actual California EDD agent on the phone is nearly impossible if you just dial the main number. A coworker told me about a service called Claimyr that basically holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. I was skeptical but when I had a certification issue I tried it at claimyr.com and it actually worked. They have a demo video explaining how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - worth knowing about in case you run into any problems down the road.

0 coins

Good to know, bookmarking that. Hoping I don't need it but the horror stories about EDD phone wait times are everywhere.

0 coins

Can confirm Claimyr is real and works. Used it when my weekly certifications weren't processing correctly. Got through to an agent within a couple hours when I'd been trying for days on my own.

0 coins

claimyr.com noted, thanks for sharing

0 coins

ok so NOBODY tells you about this part - when they ask if you were 'able and available to work' DO NOT just click yes without understanding what it means. i clicked yes every week without thinking about it and then they flagged my account because i had mentioned in my initial claim that i had a scheduled surgery coming up. they said i wasn't technically available during that period and it triggered an adjudication investigation. took 6 weeks to sort out. if you have ANY reason you were limited in your availability during a given week, be careful how you answer that question and maybe explain it in the notes field.

0 coins

Yikes, that's scary. What counts as 'limited availability'? Like if I only wanted to work within a certain radius of my home, does that count against me?

0 coins

That's a gray area honestly. EDD generally says you need to be available for suitable work which takes into account your skills and experience. A reasonable commute restriction is usually fine. But if you're saying you ONLY want remote work in your specific niche field and nothing else - that could be an issue.

0 coins

This is accurate. The able and available requirement trips up a lot of people. California EDD defines it as ready, willing, and able to accept suitable full-time work immediately. Temporary medical conditions can affect this and should be reported correctly.

0 coins

just file it its not that complicated lol click certify and answer the questions honestly thats basically it

0 coins

Ha I know it sounds simple but when you've never done it and have no idea what the questions mean it's actually kind of nerve-wracking!

0 coins

fair enough first time is always confusing

0 coins

For the job search requirement specifically - California EDD expects you to log your activities and they can request this documentation. I'd recommend setting up a simple spreadsheet with columns for date, company name, position, how you applied, and contact information. The CalJOBS website (caljobs.ca.gov) is where EDD wants you to register, and activity on there can count toward your weekly requirement. You need to complete your CalJOBS registration within 21 days of your initial claim approval or you may face a benefits hold.

0 coins

Wait, CalJOBS is separate from UI Online? I thought they were the same system. Do I need two different logins?

0 coins

Yes, completely separate systems. UI Online is for managing your benefits and filing weekly certifications. CalJOBS is the job search platform. You'll need to create a CalJOBS account separately and build out your profile/resume there. EDD links the two on their backend.

0 coins

I had no idea about the 21 day CalJOBS requirement until I read this thread. Checked my approval date and I have 9 days left. Going to set that up today. Thank you!

0 coins

Good catch. A lot of people skip CalJOBS and then wonder why their claim gets flagged. It's one of those things EDD doesn't make super obvious in their communications.

0 coins

The whole process took me about 8 minutes my first time once I found the right section. I think the confusion is that the UI Online dashboard is laid out really poorly. The 'Certify for Benefits' button isn't super prominent - it's more in the middle of the page and not at the top like you'd expect. After you submit it shows a confirmation screen with a reference number - SCREENSHOT THAT or write it down. I've heard of people's certifications not processing and having that reference number helped them prove they submitted.

0 coins

Screenshot the confirmation - noted! Does EDD send any kind of confirmation email as well?

0 coins

They send a generic notification that you submitted but I wouldn't rely on it alone. The EDD website is notorious for technical glitches and I've seen people say they got notifications for things that didn't actually process correctly in the system.

0 coins

100% screenshot every confirmation page you ever see on EDD's website. Treat it like evidence because sometimes you need it to be.

0 coins

Can I ask a dumb question - do you have to file weekly claims even during weeks you're actively interviewing for jobs? Like will it hurt your claim if you're close to getting hired?

0 coins

Not dumb at all - yes, you should keep filing every week you're unemployed even if you're interviewing. Interviewing is actually a qualifying job search activity. You stop filing once you're actually working and earning above your weekly benefit amount. If you get hired mid-week you still report that on your next certification.

0 coins

Ok good to know. I was worried that filing weekly somehow signals to employers that you're still unemployed or something. Clearly I was overthinking it.

0 coins

nobody told me that i need to report side gig income too and i got an overpayment notice. if you do any gig work like uber or instacart you have to report those earnings on your weekly certification. learned this the hard way. EDD cross-references with tax records.

0 coins

Oh that's important. I do occasional handyman work for neighbors sometimes for cash - does that count too?

0 coins

Yes it counts. Report the gross amount you received during that benefit week regardless of how you were paid. I know it feels like it doesn't matter for small amounts but EDD takes unreported earnings really seriously.

0 coins

This is something so many people get caught by. Even $50 in a week needs to be reported. The overpayment process is a nightmare to deal with and they do charge interest on amounts owed back.

0 coins

I went through this same confusion about 4 months ago. Honest truth - the first two certifications feel overwhelming but by week 3 it's like 5 minutes of your Sunday. The system remembers some of your previous answers too so you're mostly just confirming information. Stick with it, you'll get the hang of it fast.

0 coins

This is reassuring, thank you. I think I just need to do it once and see that it works.

0 coins

Exactly. And if something goes wrong with your first certification - like it doesn't process or you get an error - don't panic. That's actually pretty common. If payment doesn't show up within 3 business days of submitting, then it's worth looking into.

0 coins

I've been on unemployment twice in the last 4 years and honestly the thing that stresses people out most is not knowing what's normal. Normal: payment showing up 3-5 business days after certification. Normal: occasional pending status that clears in a day or two. NOT normal: still pending after 2 weeks, or a message saying your claim requires review. That second situation means something flagged in your claim and you'll likely need to talk to EDD directly to figure out what.

0 coins

What do you do when you need to talk to EDD directly? Is there any way besides calling?

0 coins

You can submit a message through UI Online's 'Contact EDD' section but responses take WEEKS. Phone is really the only way to get quick resolution. Which brings us back to the nightmare of actually getting through...

0 coins

Which is why I mentioned Claimyr earlier in this thread. Genuinely the best solution I've found for getting through to California EDD by phone without spending 4 hours redialing. claimyr.com - worth having in your back pocket for exactly the situation you're describing.

0 coins

wait so if I'm on standby status do I still need to do the job search activities every week? my employer told me I'd probably be called back in 4-6 weeks so EDD put me on standby but now I'm confused about what I actually have to do

0 coins

Good question and common confusion. If you're approved for standby status in California, you are generally EXEMPT from the regular job search requirements during your standby period (up to 8 weeks). You still need to file your weekly certifications and indicate your standby status, but you don't need to be conducting 3 job search activities per week the way regular claimants do. This is one of the benefits of being on standby.

0 coins

Oh thank goodness. I've been stressing about making up job search activities when I'm literally waiting to go back to my same job. That's a relief.

0 coins

One caveat - even on standby you still have to be available for work and not refusing suitable work opportunities if they come up. But yes, the active job search requirement is waived. Make sure your certification reflects your standby status each week.

0 coins

Something that caught me off guard - when EDD processes your weekly certification you might see your payment status show as 'paid' but then not see the money in your bank account for another day or two. The payment processing through Bank of America's EDD debit card or direct deposit adds some time. Don't call EDD about a missing payment until it's been at least 3 business days after 'paid' status shows up.

0 coins

Is the EDD debit card automatic or do I need to set up direct deposit separately?

0 coins

When you first apply EDD automatically defaults to sending payments via the Bank of America EDD debit card by mail. If you want direct deposit instead you have to go into your UI Online account settings and set it up under payment preferences. Direct deposit is generally faster and more reliable in my experience.

0 coins

Set up direct deposit immediately if you haven't already. The debit card process takes longer and the card can get lost or delayed in the mail which creates a whole other problem to deal with.

0 coins

EDD IS A JOKE. I filed correctly every single week for 3 months, kept a perfect job search log, registered on CalJOBS like they asked, and they STILL triggered an audit on my account for no apparent reason. Stopped my payments for almost 6 weeks while they 'reviewed' everything. I submitted every document they asked for within 48 hours and it still took that long. The system is designed to make you give up.

0 coins

I'm so sorry this happened to you. Random audits are one of the most infuriating parts of this process because there's nothing you can do to prevent them even if you're doing everything right.

0 coins

What got me through it was finally getting an actual EDD agent on the phone who could see my file and confirm they'd received all my documents. Took me many attempts to get through. Someone eventually pointed me to Claimyr and that's how I finally reached someone. Got more done in that one call than in weeks of document uploads.

0 coins

Audits and compliance reviews are unfortunately part of EDD's fraud prevention system and they do catch genuinely innocent claimants in the net. Documenting everything from day one like you did is the right approach - it just doesn't prevent the delay, it helps you resolve it faster.

0 coins

For anyone filing their first weekly claim - one tip that nobody mentions is to check your UI Online 'Claim Summary' page AFTER you certify. It should update to show the week you just certified and the expected payment amount. If the week doesn't appear there it's possible your certification didn't go through even if you thought it did.

0 coins

This is gold. I would never have known to check that. Going to do that right after I submit my first one.

0 coins

Yeah the EDD website sometimes gives you a confirmation but doesn't actually record the submission on the backend. It's a known glitch. The Claim Summary page is the ground truth for whether EDD actually received your certification.

0 coins

Double verification is always smart with EDD systems. Confirmation page screenshot PLUS claim summary check. Belt and suspenders approach.

0 coins

I'm a little confused about something - it says my benefit year is 12 months but my maximum benefit amount runs out sooner than that. Is there any way to file weekly unemployment claim past when my maximum benefit amount runs out? Or is that it?

0 coins

Once you've exhausted your maximum benefit amount (your total UI award), you cannot receive additional regular UI benefits in that benefit year regardless of how much time is left on the 12-month period. California doesn't currently have any federal extension programs active for regular unemployment. Your remaining option at that point would be to file a new claim if you have sufficient wages in a new base period, or explore other assistance programs.

0 coins

Ugh, ok. That's disappointing but I guess it makes sense. How do I know when I'm getting close to exhausting my benefits?

0 coins

Your UI Online Claim Summary shows your remaining balance. Keep an eye on it as you get toward the end. EDD should also send you a notice when your claim is near exhaustion so you have some heads up to plan accordingly.

0 coins

kinda off topic but does anyone know if you can file weekly claim for the week you got laid off? like my last day was a tuesday and i was wondering if that whole week counts

0 coins

The week of your separation follows partial week rules. You can generally claim for the days you were unemployed during that week, but only if you weren't being paid through the end of the week (like through severance or PTO payout that covered those days). It gets complicated - the week your separation happens is often called your 'waiting week' and California still has a waiting period provision that affects your first payment.

0 coins

so i don't get paid for the first week? that seems unfair

0 coins

California reinstated the one-week waiting period. So the very first week of your claim is the 'waiting period week' - you still certify for it but you don't receive a payment for it. Think of it as the week your claim officially starts. Your first actual payment comes for the second week of your claim.

0 coins

Thank you everyone in this thread, I came here with the same question as OP and this has answered basically everything I was wondering. EDD really should have a better onboarding process for first time claimants but at least communities like this exist.

0 coins

Same, I feel so much more confident about logging in and filing now. I'm going to do it today. Thank you all genuinely.

0 coins

Good luck! Come back and let us know how it goes. And bookmark this thread for reference, the CalJOBS deadline and reporting earnings stuff especially.

0 coins

One more practical thing - if you're using a mobile phone to file, the EDD mobile experience on UI Online is not great. The website isn't fully optimized for small screens and I've had certifications not submit properly on mobile. If at all possible, file from a desktop or laptop browser. If you only have a phone, try using Chrome in desktop mode.

0 coins

I was planning to do it from my phone since that's what I use for everything. Switching to my laptop based on this advice.

0 coins

Good call. EDD's systems are old and the mobile compatibility is unreliable. Desktop is just safer for anything important.

0 coins

Also avoid filing from the EDD app if you downloaded it - there were bugs reported where certifications appeared to submit but didn't register. The actual website in a browser is more reliable.
