How does unemployment pay you through California EDD?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with California EDD last week and honestly I have no idea what happens next in terms of actually getting paid. Like how does unemployment pay you exactly? Do they mail you a check or does it go directly to your bank account? I've been reading through the EDD website but it's kind of overwhelming and I can't figure out if I need to set something up or if it just happens automatically once my claim gets approved. I'm coming from a job in retail where I got laid off after 4 years so I've never had to deal with any of this before. Also I'm not even sure if I need to do the weekly certifications before I see any money or if the payment comes first. Any help would be appreciated because I'm already stressing about bills next month.

Great question and totally understandable to be confused your first time. So here's how it actually works with California EDD payments. When your claim gets approved, EDD will send you a debit card called the Bank of America EDD Debit Card in the mail. All your unemployment benefit payments get loaded directly onto that card. You can use it like a regular debit card anywhere Visa is accepted, or you can transfer the money to your personal bank account for free through the Bank of America website or by calling the number on the back of the card. The important thing you need to know is that you MUST complete your biweekly certifications (they call them weekly claims even though you do them every two weeks) before any money gets released. You certify through UI Online at portal.edd.ca.gov or by phone using EDD Tele-Cert. No certification means no payment, period. Once you submit your certification and it's processed, payments usually hit the debit card within 3-5 business days. There's also typically a one-week unpaid waiting period at the very start of your claim before payments begin.

AuthorOk this is super helpful thank you. So I need to wait for the physical card to arrive before I can do anything? And when does the waiting period start, is it from when I filed or from when they approve the claim?

Charlie Yang
The waiting period starts from the beginning of your benefit year, not the approval date. The card usually arrives 7-10 business days after your claim is approved. You can actually start doing your certifications on UI Online even before the card arrives since the money will just be waiting on the card when it gets to you.

this is right, i got my card about a week after approval. just make sure you activate it as soon as it arrives

One thing to add - you can also set up direct deposit instead of using the debit card. Log into your UI Online account, go to payment options, and you can link your personal checking account. Honestly I switched to direct deposit after my first payment because the debit card had some annoying fees if you used ATMs too much. Direct deposit hits your bank usually the next business day after EDD releases the payment.

AuthorOh I didn't know direct deposit was an option! That's definitely what I'd prefer. Is there a waiting period before I can switch or can I set it up right now?

You can set it up anytime through UI Online under the payment preferences section. I'd do it sooner rather than later so your first payment goes straight to your bank.

direct deposit is way better imo, never had a problem with it

Heads up about the certification process since that's where a lot of first timers get confused. When you certify biweekly you have to answer questions about whether you were able and available for work, whether you looked for work, and whether you earned any wages. If you answer anything that triggers a review, your payment can get held up in adjudication which can take weeks. I know that sounds scary but most straightforward certifications go through fine. If you do get stuck in adjudication or have ANY issues with your payment status, I'd seriously recommend trying Claimyr. It's a service at claimyr.com that helps you actually get through to a live EDD agent on the phone, which as you probably already know is basically impossible on your own. There's a demo video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - I used it when my payment got flagged and had the issue resolved same day instead of waiting weeks. Worth checking out before you run into problems.

AuthorWhat kinds of things trigger adjudication? I want to make sure I don't accidentally cause a problem when I certify.

Rajiv Kumar
Common triggers include saying you refused any work, that you weren't available for work, or if you report some earnings. Also if there's anything unusual in your claim history it can flag automatically. Most people with clean layoff situations go through no problem though.

adjudication is the WORST, i was stuck in it for 6 weeks with zero communication from EDD. that claimyr tip is solid, I wish i had known about it then

yeah adjudication is really hit or miss, my cousin got through it in 5 days but my coworker waited 2 months

so wait i'm confused, do you have to do the job search stuff too before they pay you? like I thought you had to apply to jobs every week
0 coins
Charlie Yang
Yes, California EDD requires you to make at least three job search contacts per week while collecting unemployment. You certify that you completed those contacts when you do your biweekly claim. You're supposed to keep a job search log with the employer name, contact method, position, and date but EDD doesn't always ask to see it - you just need to have it in case of an audit.

Chloe Delgado
oh ok so you just say you did it, got it
0 coins
Charlie Yang
Well you should actually BE doing the job search activities, not just saying you did. If EDD audits your claim and you can't back up your job search log you could face disqualification and potentially an overpayment situation where they want money back. Take the requirement seriously.

I am going through something similar right now and honestly the whole process has been way more stressful than I expected. Filed three weeks ago, got my approval letter, received the debit card, activated it, did my first certification... and then nothing. No payment, no explanation, just shows as pending in my UI Online account. I've been trying to call EDD every single day and cannot get through. The automated system just tells me there's high call volume and disconnects me. Starting to really panic.

This is exactly the situation where Claimyr saved me honestly. I was in the same loop, couldn't get through on the phone, nothing making sense on UI Online. The service at claimyr.com connects you to an actual EDD agent and I got my payment released the same day I finally got someone on the line. The video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 explains exactly how it works. Don't spend another week hitting redial.

pending for weeks is so common and so frustrating. EDD's phone situation is genuinely broken

Something nobody mentioned yet - after you receive your first payment make sure you understand the biweekly certification schedule. EDD assigns you specific dates to certify and if you miss your window you can still certify late but you might get a notice asking why. Doesn't mean you won't get paid but it adds extra steps. The UI Online portal will show you exactly when your next certification is due.

Olivia Martinez
AuthorHow do I find out what my certification dates are? Is it in the approval letter?

Yes it should be in your award letter, and also in your UI Online account under the certify for benefits section. It'll show clearly when the next certification period opens and closes.

lol I remember my first time filing for unemployment being completely lost too. The EDD website is genuinely confusing. One tip: download the UI Online app on your phone if you haven't already, it's actually easier to do your certifications on mobile than on the desktop website in my experience

the app is decent but sometimes it's glitchy during peak times, like Sunday nights when everyone is trying to certify. desktop backup is good to have

I need to correct something in this thread - the waiting period issue. EDD eliminated the one-week unpaid waiting period for a while during the pandemic but it IS back now as of 2024. So your first week of unemployment you will not receive payment for. That waiting week serves as your first week of the benefit year but you still have to certify for it, you just won't be paid for it. Don't be alarmed when you see one week with no payment - that's normal and expected.
0 coins
Olivia Martinez
AuthorOk so to be totally clear - I'll certify for that first week, it'll show up but have $0 payment, and then the following weeks should have actual payments?
0 coins
Daniela Rossi
Exactly right. The first certification period you complete will cover that unpaid waiting week plus potentially a second week depending on your certification schedule. Just certify for everything as normal and the system handles the waiting week automatically.

I didn't know the waiting week was back, I thought it was still waived. Good to know for when I file again potentially

CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN why EDD makes it so impossibly hard to get a human on the phone?? I have been dealing with a held payment for THREE WEEKS. UI Online shows my certification is complete, no issues flagged, but the payment just sits there. I call at 8am when they open, immediately get the high volume message and hang up. Called 47 times yesterday (yes I counted). This system is designed to make people give up and that's exactly what they want.

47 times, I felt that in my soul. I was at that exact point of exhaustion when someone in another forum mentioned Claimyr. You can find them at claimyr.com - they essentially handle the phone queue process for you so you actually get connected to an EDD representative instead of being hung up on endlessly. There's a quick walkthrough video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. I know it sounds too good to be true when you're this frustrated but it genuinely worked for me.

Something worth knowing about the payment amounts themselves since OP asked about how unemployment pays you and nobody covered the actual dollar amounts. California EDD calculates your weekly benefit amount (WBA) based on your highest earning quarter during your base period. The base period is roughly the 12 months ending about 6 months before you filed. The WBA is approximately 60-70% of your weekly earnings up to a maximum of $450 per week for 2025. When you get your award letter it will show your WBA and your total award amount which is your maximum benefit amount for the benefit year.
0 coins
Olivia Martinez
AuthorThat's exactly what I wanted to know too, thank you. My award letter showed $387 per week which I'm now realizing is based on my earnings from like a year ago, not my most recent paychecks. Is there any way to appeal that calculation?
0 coins
Elijah Brown
If you believe the quarterly wage amounts EDD used are incorrect, yes you can appeal. Your award letter will have a breakdown of which quarters and which wages were used. Compare those to your actual W2s or pay stubs. If there's a discrepancy file an appeal within 30 days of the award letter date and request a wage audit.
0 coins
Daniela Rossi
This is correct information. Also worth noting that even if the calculation is technically correct, if you were recently promoted or got a raise, your WBA might feel low because it's based on older earnings. That's unfortunately how the base period calculation works and isn't really appealable unless the numbers themselves are wrong.

Does anyone know if you get paid for holidays? Like if I certified for a week that included July 4th does that affect anything
0 coins
Charlie Yang
Holidays don't affect your certification or payment amount. You certify for the week as normal and get your full weekly benefit amount regardless of what holidays fell in that period. Holidays only matter if you had a part-time job and were scheduled to work but didn't because of the holiday - in that case you'd report it differently.

Oh ok cool, I was worried about that for no reason then lol

Jumping in because I just went through the certification process for the first time and the questions are kind of weird. Like one of them asks if you were physically and mentally able to work - what happens if you say no? Does your claim automatically get denied?
0 coins
Charlie Yang
Answering no to the able and available question will hold your payment for that week pending review because being able and available for work is a basic eligibility requirement for unemployment. If you had a temporary medical issue you can sometimes explain it but it can complicate things. Most people should be answering yes to that question each week.

Maria Gonzalez
What if I had like a minor injury that kept me home for two days but I could have worked the other days? Do I split it somehow?
0 coins
Elijah Brown
For partial weeks with a medical situation it gets complicated and honestly that's exactly the kind of nuanced question where you need to talk to an EDD rep directly rather than guess. One wrong answer on your certification can trigger adjudication that takes weeks to clear up.

been collecting for about 4 months now and the system works fine once you get used to it. certify every two weeks on schedule, do your job search contacts, keep your log. the only time i had a hiccup was when I reported some freelance income and it held my payment for a bit but got cleared up. for OP just stay on top of your certification dates and read every notice EDD sends carefully
0 coins
Olivia Martinez
AuthorHow did you handle reporting the freelance income? Did it reduce your payment or stop it completely?
0 coins
Natalie Chen
When you earn wages during a certification period you report the gross amount and EDD adjusts your benefit payment for that week. Usually they deduct 25% of your WBA for the first portion of earnings before reducing dollar for dollar. So earning a little won't necessarily cut you off, but you have to report it accurately or face an overpayment later.
0 coins
Grace Patel
This is the partial wages rule and it's actually pretty generous if you're doing gig work on the side. Better to report and get a reduced payment than to not report and get hit with an overpayment demand later.

I have a question kind of related - what if EDD deposits money on the debit card but you already switched to direct deposit? Does it just go to the old card or does it automatically go to your bank?
0 coins
Emily Thompson
Once you switch to direct deposit in UI Online, all future payments will go to your bank account. Any payments that were already processed before the switch might still go to the card but new ones after you set it up go to your bank. Give it one certification cycle to fully switch over.

Santiago Martinez
Ok good because I just switched yesterday and was worried my next payment might go to the wrong place

Honestly the whole EDD payment system would be fine if the PHONE SUPPORT wasn't a complete disaster. Everything about the actual payment structure is understandable once someone explains it, but if anything goes even slightly wrong you are completely on your own because reaching a live person is basically impossible. I spent two weeks calling before finding a workaround.

For OP's original question about how unemployment pays you - one more thing nobody mentioned is the tax situation. Unemployment benefits ARE taxable income at the federal level. California does not tax UI benefits at the state level which is nice. You can elect to have 10% federal withholding taken out of each payment automatically, or you can just set money aside yourself and deal with it at tax time. You'll receive a 1099-G form from EDD in January showing your total benefits for the year.
0 coins
Olivia Martinez
AuthorOh wow I did not think about taxes at all. Should I do the withholding or just track it myself?
0 coins
Zoe Walker
Depends on your situation. If you think you'll be back to work soon and have other income, withholding might prevent a bill at tax time. If this is your main income for a long stretch it might be fine without. When in doubt do the withholding and get a refund rather than owe.

Isabella Russo
I always do the withholding just to be safe. Last thing you need is a surprise tax bill after going through unemployment

Something I learned the hard way - if you move or change your address make sure to update it in UI Online IMMEDIATELY. I had my approval letter and some important EDD notices going to my old address for like two weeks and missed some deadlines. The address on file for your EDD account controls where they send physical mail even if you're doing everything online.

Olivia Martinez
AuthorGood call, I actually moved like a month before I got laid off. I should probably make sure my address is current. Where do I update it in UI Online?

Log into UI Online, go to profile settings or contact information - it should be in there. Also make sure your phone number and email are current because EDD will sometimes contact you through those too.

Quick note for anyone reading this thread later - the biweekly certification window opens Sunday and closes Saturday. Most people certify on Sundays when it opens because payments process faster. If you wait until Thursday or Friday you might have to wait an extra business day or two for payment. Not a huge deal but worth knowing if timing matters for bills.
