How often is unemployment paid in California? EDD payment schedule explained
Just got approved for unemployment last week and I'm completely lost on the payment schedule. My claim was approved but I have no idea how often California EDD actually sends payments. I certified for my first week and now I'm just sitting here watching my bank account wondering when money is supposed to show up. My landlord isn't exactly known for his patience so I really need to figure this out. Did they send me something explaining this? I checked the approval letter but it just talks about my weekly benefit amount and not really when I'll actually receive the money. Do they pay every week, every two weeks, or what? And does direct deposit come faster than a debit card?

California EDD pays on a bi-weekly basis, meaning you certify for two weeks at a time and then receive payment after each certification period is processed. So when you log into UI Online and complete your bi-weekly certification, EDD typically processes the payment within a few business days. If you have direct deposit set up, funds usually hit your bank account within 2-3 business days after you certify. The EDD debit card takes a bit longer, sometimes 5-7 business days for the physical card to arrive if it's your first payment, but after that reloads happen faster. The key thing to understand is that unemployment is NOT paid weekly even though your benefit amount is expressed as a weekly benefit amount (WBA). You certify every two weeks and get paid for both weeks at once.

AuthorOh okay so I certify every two weeks and get paid for both weeks together? That actually makes more sense. So my first payment should cover weeks 1 and 2 combined?

Callum Savage
Exactly right. Your first certification will cover the first two weeks of your benefit year. After that it just rolls forward every two weeks. Just make sure you certify on time because if you miss your certification window you can still backdate but it gets complicated.

this is correct, just wanted to add that your certification week runs Sunday through Saturday so keep that in mind when you're counting your two week windows

Wait I'm confused, I thought you certified every week? I've been doing weekly certs this whole time lol. Did I do something wrong??

No you're fine! EDD actually does have some claimants on weekly certification schedules depending on certain circumstances. Most claimants are on bi-weekly (every 2 weeks) but don't panic - if UI Online is letting you certify and you're getting paid you're doing it right for your specific claim setup.

okay phew i was freaking out thinking I messed everything up. thanks for clarifying

Same happened to me, different people seem to have different schedules and EDD isn't super clear about explaining which one you're on

To add some more detail here since payment timing is such a stressful thing when you're depending on this money - after you submit your bi-weekly certification, EDD typically sends a confirmation that payment is being processed. You can actually track the payment status in UI Online under the 'Payment Activity' section. It'll show you whether it's processing, issued, or if there's any issue holding it up. Direct deposit is definitely the faster option. I switched from the debit card to direct deposit about 3 months into my claim and the difference was noticeable - went from sometimes waiting 6+ days to consistently seeing money in 2-3 days after certifying. One important thing: EDD pays for the week in arrears, meaning when you certify, you're certifying for weeks that already passed, not the upcoming week. So there's always going to be that built-in delay.

AuthorThe payment activity section is really helpful, I found it after reading your comment. It shows my payment as 'processing' right now which is reassuring at least

the in arrears thing tripped me up so bad when I first filed. I kept thinking I was going to get paid for the current week and kept being confused why the timing felt off

Yeah it's genuinely confusing the way EDD structures it. The week ending date on your payment confirmation is key - that tells you exactly which week the payment covers.

Honestly I wish someone had told me all this when I first filed. I spent like the first three weeks of my claim calling EDD trying to find out when I'd get paid and couldn't get through to ANYONE. A coworker eventually told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) which is a service that basically navigates the phone system and connects you to an actual EDD rep. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see how it works before trying it. Got through to an agent who walked me through the whole payment timeline and explained my specific setup. Wish I'd found it sooner instead of spending days redialing.

AuthorOmg yes the calling situation is absolutely brutal. I tried for two days straight and either got the busy signal recording or got disconnected after holding for an hour. Will definitely check out that Claimyr link

I've heard of this, does it actually work? Sounds almost too good to be true when EDD phones are so notoriously impossible

Madison Tipne
Totally understand the skepticism, I thought the same thing. But yes it actually connected me to a live agent within a couple hours versus me trying to call for literally days. The video demo shows the whole process if you want proof of concept before committing

seconding this, used it when my payment got stuck and needed to talk to someone. worked for me

THE PAYMENT SCHEDULE IS THE LEAST OF YOUR WORRIES WAIT UNTIL YOUR CLAIM GETS STUCK IN ADJUDICATION FOR 6 WEEKS WITH NO EXPLANATION AND EVERY TIME YOU CALL YOU GET DISCONNECTED. Sorry for yelling but I'm currently living this nightmare and seeing people stressed about normal processing times when some of us are waiting MONTHS makes me want to scream into the void. How often is unemployment paid? HOW ABOUT NEVER APPARENTLY lol kill me

Finley Garrett
Oh no I'm so sorry, adjudication holds are absolutely brutal. Are you able to get through to anyone to get a status update?

Malia Ponder
I've been trying for weeks. Getting through to a live agent at EDD feels literally impossible. Someone above mentioned Claimyr and I'm about to try it because at this point I'll try anything
0 coins
Callum Savage
Adjudication is a completely separate situation from regular payment processing - OP your claim being approved means you're not in adjudication so you should be fine. But for the person dealing with an adjudication hold, definitely try to reach an agent because sometimes there's a simple issue that needs resolution and they can't notify you about it without you calling in

quick question related to this - does the payment amount change every time or is it always the same? like my weekly benefit amount is the same number every week right
0 coins
Cass Green
Your WBA (weekly benefit amount) stays the same throughout your benefit year unless you have earnings to report. If you work any hours during a certification week and report those wages, EDD will reduce your payment for that week proportionally. So if you earned money doing gig work or part time hours, expect a reduced payment for those weeks. But if you had zero income during a week, you should receive your full WBA for that week.
0 coins
Aliyah Debovski
oh that's good to know, I did a few hours of freelance last week and was wondering if I needed to report that
0 coins
Cass Green
Yes absolutely report it. EDD cross-references with employer wage records and if they catch unreported earnings you could end up with an overpayment notice and potentially a false statement disqualification which is way worse than just getting a reduced payment. Always report earnings even if it seems minor.

Miranda Singer
reporting is SO important, I know someone who didn't report a few hundred bucks from freelance and ended up with a huge overpayment to pay back

For anyone wondering about the actual days - when I was on EDD the money would typically show up in my bank account on Wednesdays or Thursdays if I certified on Sunday night right when the new certification period opened. I think certifying early in the window (Sunday/Monday) gets you paid faster than waiting until the end of the window. Not sure if that's officially documented anywhere but it was consistent for me across several months.

Landon Flounder
AuthorThis is really practical advice thank you. I certified on a Sunday evening so hopefully that means I'm in the earlier processing batch

Finley Garrett
That's been my experience! Keep an eye on your bank account Wed/Thu and you'll probably see it

Holly Lascelles
I've heard the same thing about certifying early in the window, seems to be a common experience even if EDD doesn't officially confirm it

Also worth knowing - there's a one week waiting period at the very beginning of your claim. The first week you're eligible for benefits is an unpaid waiting week, meaning you certify for it but don't get paid for it. EDD reinstated this waiting week after waiving it during COVID. So your first actual payment won't come until your third week of unemployment (you certify for weeks 1-2 together but week 1 is the waiting week so you only get paid for week 2 in that first certification). Just so you know what to expect with your first check being smaller than you might anticipate.
0 coins
Landon Flounder
AuthorWait really?? Nobody told me this. So my first payment is only going to be for one week not two?
0 coins
Kyle Wallace
Correct unfortunately. The waiting week policy came back. EDD does credit it to your claim so it counts toward your benefit year but you don't receive money for it. Your second certification and every one after should be the full two-week amount.

Malia Ponder
the waiting week is such BS when people are already financially stressed from losing their job. like they need the money NOW not in three weeks

Finley Garrett
agreed it's brutal but at least knowing about it in advance helps you plan better than getting blindsided by a half-payment

Something nobody mentioned yet - make sure you have direct deposit set up properly in UI Online before your first payment processes. If EDD tries to send direct deposit and there's any error with your banking info, it can cause significant delays. I'd log in and double check your routing and account numbers are entered correctly. Also make sure the account is actually active and in your name.

Landon Flounder
AuthorGood call, just went and checked mine and everything looks right. The account is confirmed and the routing number matches

Great, you should be set then. If anything does go wrong with a payment you can see it in the Payment Activity section - it'll show 'returned' if there was a banking issue

Another EDD payment timing thing that caught me off guard - if your certification falls on or right around a holiday weekend, processing takes longer. Like if you certify on the Sunday before a Monday holiday, expect maybe an extra day or two before payment shows up. EDD observes state holidays so their processing staff isn't working those days.
0 coins
Miranda Singer
Oh this is really good to know, I never thought about holiday delays

Madison Tipne
Yeah learned it the hard way when a holiday Monday pushed my expected Wednesday deposit to Friday. Panicked for nothing but still stressful when you're counting on that money

I want to go back to the phone access issue for a second because I know a lot of people on this thread are also struggling to get through to EDD agents. I found Claimyr (claimyr.com) through a different forum post and used it specifically to ask an EDD rep about my payment status when my first certification seemed to disappear into a black hole. The agent confirmed everything was fine and just processing, which honestly was worth it just for the peace of mind. There's a walkthrough video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see it before trying. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

sorry if this is a dumb question but does EDD pay on weekends? like if processing finishes on a Friday does the deposit happen Saturday or do you have to wait until Monday
0 coins
Callum Savage
Bank processing is generally Monday through Friday so even if EDD marks a payment as issued over the weekend, your actual bank deposit won't post until the next business day (Monday). This is a bank thing not an EDD thing. Direct deposit ACH transfers don't process on weekends or federal holidays.
0 coins
Ryder Ross
ugh okay so if they issue it Friday night I'm waiting until Monday. good to know I guess
0 coins
Finley Garrett
Exactly this. I've seen my payment activity in UI Online show 'issued' on a Saturday but the money didn't hit my account until Tuesday (Monday was a holiday that time). The UI Online timestamp doesn't mean it's in your bank yet.

Just want to validate OP that this confusion is SO common. When I first got on EDD I literally thought I was getting scammed because I expected a weekly paycheck like my old job and instead I got this two-week certification thing with deposits on weird days. Took me a full month to understand the rhythm of it. Once you've been through two or three certification cycles it becomes second nature.

Landon Flounder
AuthorThis is weirdly reassuring thank you lol. Just the confirmation that it's confusing and I'm not missing something obvious

Miranda Singer
Completely normal confusion! EDD doesn't do a great job explaining the payment mechanics when you first sign up. You basically have to figure it out from forums like this.

One more practical tip - set yourself a calendar reminder for every two weeks on the Sunday when your certification window opens. Missing your certification window doesn't automatically cancel your benefits but it does create extra steps. You can request backdated certifications but EDD can ask you to verify why you missed the window and it slows everything down. Much easier to just certify on time.
0 coins
Landon Flounder
AuthorGreat idea, I just set a recurring calendar reminder. What time does the certification window open on Sundays?
0 coins
Kyle Wallace
UI Online opens for certification at 12:01am Sunday technically but practically speaking anytime Sunday works fine. I usually just do it Sunday morning with coffee.

Ally Tailer
Sunday morning certification is the way. Make it a habit and you'll never miss a window

Does anyone know if the payment schedule is different if you're on standby status vs regular job search UI? I'm about to be laid off temporarily and my employer said I should file for standby but I'm not sure if that affects when or how often you get paid
0 coins
Cass Green
The payment schedule itself is the same for standby status - you still certify bi-weekly and still get paid after each certification. The main difference with standby status is that you're waived from the normal active job search requirements because you have a definite return-to-work date with your employer. You still need to certify and confirm you're available to work, you just don't need to log job search activities in CalJOBS. The amount and timing of payments is identical to regular UI.
0 coins
Gianni Serpent
Oh that's a relief, I was worried standby was some different system entirely. Good to know the payment timing is the same
0 coins
Callum Savage
One thing to add - standby status needs to be renewed periodically (every few weeks I believe) or EDD may put you back on regular job search requirements. Check your award notice for specifics on your standby approval period.

lol I've been on EDD three separate times over the past few years and honestly every time I go back the portal looks different and I have to relearn everything. At least the payment schedule hasn't changed much - still the bi-weekly thing. The one thing that keeps tripping me up is that my benefit year resets and my WBA can be different each time depending on what I made at my last job
0 coins
Finley Garrett
The WBA calculation is based on the highest earning quarter of your base period, right? So if your last job paid more than previous ones your WBA should go up
0 coins
Henry Delgado
Yeah exactly. My second claim I got a higher WBA because I'd gotten a raise before the layoff. Silver lining I guess

Aliyah Debovski
wait so each time you file a new claim it's based on your most recent wages? I didn't know EDD recalculates each time

UPDATE: I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above and actually got through to a live EDD agent today. Turns out my adjudication hold was because they needed to verify my separation reason and there was a flag on my claim that needed a phone interview to resolve. The agent scheduled the phone interview for next week. If I hadn't called I genuinely don't know how long I would have just been waiting with no idea what was happening. So for anyone else stuck in adjudication limbo - call EDD and if you can't get through try Claimyr because apparently there was an actual fixable issue on my claim nobody told me about.

Holly Lascelles
This is such a good update!! I'm really glad you got some answers. The fact that there was an actual issue that could be resolved and they just... didn't tell you... is so frustrating but at least now you know
0 coins
Malia Ponder
EXACTLY. They had a flag on my claim that was sitting there waiting and I had zero notification. If I hadn't pushed to get through to someone it could have just sat there indefinitely. The system is broken but at least now I have a path forward

Landon Flounder
AuthorRooting for you, hope the phone interview goes well and your payments start coming soon

This is a really good example of why it's worth fighting to get through to an actual agent, sometimes there's something specific holding up your claim that just needs a human to resolve

To fully answer OP's original question since this thread went in a bunch of directions - here's the complete payment timeline summary: 1) File claim and get approved, 2) Complete your first bi-weekly certification (Sunday when your window opens), 3) EDD processes within 2-4 business days, 4) Direct deposit arrives 2-3 business days after processing, 5) Note that your first payment covers only week 2 of your claim (week 1 is the unpaid waiting week), 6) Every subsequent certification is for 2 full weeks. Repeat every 2 weeks. That's the whole rhythm.
