Is California EDD unemployment paid weekly or biweekly?

Just got approved for unemployment and I'm completely lost on how the payment schedule actually works. I thought benefits were paid out weekly but my neighbor said California EDD sends payments every two weeks? I filed my first weekly certification three days ago and nothing has hit my Bank of America debit card or the EDD debit card yet. Does anyone know if unemployment is paid weekly or is it some other schedule? I also don't know if I need to file every week or every two weeks. The approval letter wasn't very clear about any of this and I can't get anyone on the phone at EDD to explain it.

So here's how it actually works - California EDD requires you to certify for benefits every two weeks, but the system is set up so you're certifying for two individual weeks at once. Each week within that certification covers its own weekly benefit amount. So technically the payments are calculated weekly but you request them on a biweekly cycle. When EDD processes your certification, they usually issue the payment within a few business days and it covers both weeks you certified for. So you'll see a larger deposit that represents two weeks worth of benefits hitting your EDD debit card at one time.

0 coins

Okay so I file once every two weeks but get paid for both weeks together? That makes way more sense. So my first payment should cover two weeks worth of benefits in one deposit?

0 coins

this is correct, been on unemployment twice and it works exactly like this both times

0 coins

Just want to add that your payment hitting the EDD debit card vs a direct deposit can also affect timing. The EDD prepaid debit card sometimes shows funds a day before a bank transfer would, just something to keep in mind while you're waiting.

California EDD pays based on your biweekly certification cycle but each individual week has its own benefit calculation. Your weekly benefit amount (WBA) is set when your claim is approved and that's the amount you receive for each week you certify for. If your WBA is say $450, and you certify covering two weeks, you'd receive $900 in that payment assuming no earnings to report and no issues with your certification. The payment typically processes within 3 to 5 business days after you submit your certification through UI Online.

0 coins

Got it. My WBA is $387 so I should see $774 when the first payment comes through. Is there any reason it might be less than that?

0 coins

yes if you worked any hours during those two weeks you have to report the earnings and they deduct from your payment. also the very first week of your claim is usually a waiting week with no payment

0 coins

The waiting week comment above is important - California EDD typically has a one-week unpaid waiting period at the start of your claim. So your very first certification period covers two weeks but you'll only be paid for one of them. After that first cycle you get paid for both weeks each time.

0 coins

WAIT so the first week is free money for edd and we just lose it??? I never knew this and I've filed twice smh

0 coins

I was super confused about this same thing when I first got approved. What helped me was thinking of it like this - you certify biweekly but the underlying structure is weekly. The reason EDD does it this way is so they can verify each individual week separately (job search activities, any earnings, availability to work) even though you submit everything together every two weeks. One thing that tripped me up was I kept trying to call EDD to confirm my payment timeline and couldn't get through to anyone. Spent like 4 days redialing. Someone in another thread mentioned Claimyr - it's a service at claimyr.com that helps you actually get a live EDD agent on the phone instead of the endless busy signals. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. I used it to confirm my payment status and get a question answered about my certification and it saved me so much frustration.

0 coins

Four days of redialing sounds like a nightmare. I've already given up after like 2 hours of busy signals. I'll check out that Claimyr link, thanks

0 coins

does claimyr actually work? seems too good to be true that you can just get through to edd

0 coins

It worked for me, I was skeptical too. You basically let it handle the hold queue situation and it connects you when an agent is available. Took a lot less effort than my previous attempts to call EDD directly.

0 coins

ive heard of this too, my cousin used it when her claim got stuck

0 coins

To directly answer your question - unemployment is NOT paid weekly in California. It's paid on a biweekly basis following your certification submissions. Here's the basic timeline: 1. You certify every two weeks through UI Online or by phone 2. EDD processes your certification (usually 3-5 business days) 3. Payment is issued covering both weeks in that certification period 4. Funds appear on your EDD debit card or bank account The certification window opens every two weeks and you have a specific window to submit. Missing your certification window can delay or interrupt your payments so mark your certification dates on your calendar.

0 coins

This is really helpful laid out like this. How do I know when my certification window opens? Does EDD send a reminder?

0 coins

You can set up text or email reminders through your UI Online account. Go to your profile settings and look for notification preferences. EDD also shows your next certification date on the main dashboard when you log in. I'd recommend setting a calendar reminder for yourself as backup though because the EDD notifications don't always come through reliably.

0 coins

the text reminders work pretty good in my experience, I've been getting them on time for the past few months

0 coins

wait so do you have to do job search activities every week even though you certify every two weeks? i'm confused about how that part works with the weekly vs biweekly thing

0 coins

Yes - job search requirements are tracked weekly even though you certify biweekly. When you submit your biweekly certification you answer questions separately for each week including job search contacts. California currently requires 3 job search activities per week so over a biweekly certification you'd be reporting 6 total job search activities (3 per week).

0 coins

oh no i only did like 2 total for both weeks... is that going to mess up my payment??

0 coins

that could be a problem. you're supposed to do 3 per week minimum. might want to call edd to clarify before your next certification. the job search requirement is taken pretty seriously

0 coins

great now I'm panicking. I didn't realize it was 3 PER WEEK not 3 total for the two weeks

0 coins

I went through this exact confusion when I first filed. The biweekly certification thing threw me off too. One thing nobody mentioned yet - if your certification has any issues or discrepancies it can get flagged and sent to adjudication which means your payment gets held while EDD investigates. That can add weeks to your wait time. In my case I reported some freelance income incorrectly on one certification and it triggered a review that held up three weeks of payments. The adjudication process is not fast.

0 coins

That sounds stressful. If something does go wrong with my certification is there anything I can do to speed up the adjudication?

0 coins

Not really from what I experienced. The main thing you can do is make sure to respond quickly to any mail or messages from EDD asking for more info. Check your UI Online inbox regularly. The adjudication just takes as long as it takes unfortunately. Calling to check in is also helpful but getting through is another story.

0 coins

adjudication is basically just EDD ignoring your claim for weeks while your bills pile up, been there

0 coins

the biweekly thing makes sense once you get used to it but EDD really should explain this better when you first get approved. the approval letter is so vague about payment schedule and timing. took me a while to figure out my actual payment dates

0 coins

Agreed the approval letter is basically useless for understanding how any of this actually works

0 coins

right?? it took me asking in forums like this to actually understand what was happening with my claim. EDD's own website isn't much better

0 coins

Something worth knowing about the payment timing - EDD processes payments Monday through Friday excluding holidays. So if your certification processes on a Thursday it might not hit your card until Tuesday of the following week if there's a weekend in between. This confused me early on because I expected payment on a specific day and it came a couple days later than I anticipated. The EDD debit card through Bank of America tends to update a little faster than direct deposit in my observation.

0 coins

Good to know, so weekends don't count for processing time. That explains why some people in other threads say they wait longer than others.

0 coins

Exactly. Also federal holidays add extra days. If you certify right before a three day weekend you might wait nearly a week for the payment to process.

0 coins

this happened to me over memorial day weekend, certified right before the holiday and waited almost 8 days for payment. was freaking out thinking something was wrong

0 coins

okay real question though - if I already worked a few hours this week do I have to report it even if the money won't come until after my certification period? Like what's the timing on reporting wages

0 coins

You report wages during the week you EARN them, not when you get paid. So if you worked Tuesday and Wednesday this week, those wages get reported in the certification that covers this week, even if your paycheck doesn't arrive until next week. This is a really common mistake that can trigger overpayment notices if done wrong.

0 coins

oh wow i definitely would have reported it wrong. I was going to put it on whichever certification period my paycheck came in. thanks for clarifying

0 coins

This trips up so many people and leads to overpayment situations that are a nightmare to resolve. Wages when earned not when received is the rule - EDD is pretty strict about this.

0 coins

EDD is an absolute NIGHTMARE to deal with when your payment doesn't show up. I had a situation where I certified on time, everything looked correct, and my payment just... didn't come. Spent two weeks trying to call and couldn't get through. Finally found out about Claimyr through someone here and used it to reach an actual EDD agent. The agent spotted the issue in about 5 minutes - something with my direct deposit info that got flagged. Would have taken me forever to figure that out without talking to a real person. claimyr.com is legit if you're having any issues like this.

0 coins

Two weeks without payment must have been so stressful. Glad you got it resolved. Good to hear that Claimyr works for actually getting issues fixed not just for basic questions.

0 coins

It was genuinely awful. Had to borrow money from family. But yeah once I got a person on the phone it was handled fast. The hard part is just getting to that point.

0 coins

same thing happened to my roommate, her payment just disappeared for like 3 weeks. turned out to be a direct deposit verification issue too. these little flags that EDD sets are so annoying

0 coins

to answer the original question more simply lol - you'll get paid every two weeks, each payment covers two weeks of benefits, and you certify every two weeks. just think of it as a biweekly thing all around. the 'weekly' language in the EDD paperwork is confusing because they still calculate everything per week but you don't actually see money arrive every week

0 coins

This is actually the simplest explanation I've seen in this whole thread haha. Thank you

0 coins

haha yeah sometimes simpler is better. good luck with your claim!

0 coins

one more thing to add - if you have a part time job and are working some hours while on unemployment, the calculation gets more complicated. EDD uses something called partial benefits where they look at your weekly earnings against your WBA and calculate how much you still receive. The formula isn't just a straight subtraction which confuses a lot of people. basically EDD disregards the first 25% of your WBA in earnings before reducing your payment dollar for dollar. so if your WBA is $387 you could earn up to about $96 before your benefit starts getting reduced.

0 coins

I didn't know about the 25% disregard. That's actually really helpful since I'm doing some occasional gig work. So I'm not penalized on a dollar for dollar basis right from the first dollar earned?

0 coins

Correct. The partial benefit calculation is designed to encourage people to work some hours without completely losing their benefits. Just make sure you report everything accurately though. EDD cross-references wage data with employer records.

0 coins

I learned about this the hard way when I DIDN'T report some part time work thinking it would cancel my benefits. Got an overpayment notice 6 months later for way more than the job even paid me. Always report everything

0 coins

The overpayment notices EDD sends are genuinely scary. Report everything even if it seems small. The penalty for not reporting is way worse than just having a reduced benefit amount.

0 coins

does anyone know if theres a way to see exactly when your payment was sent vs when it will hit your account? like is there a tracking system in UI Online

0 coins

Yes - in UI Online there's a payment history section that shows when each payment was issued, the amount, and the payment method. It won't give you an exact bank delivery time but you can see the issue date which helps you know how many business days to expect before it arrives.

0 coins

oh I've never noticed that section! I'll look for it. I just check my bank app obsessively which isn't great for my anxiety lol

0 coins

The payment history page is super useful. Also if you have the EDD debit card you can check the prepaid card balance separately through the Bank of America site which sometimes updates before your UI Online shows the payment.

0 coins

how long does edd usually take to process the first payment? I've been waiting 9 days since I submitted my first certification and nothing yet. starting to worry something is wrong

0 coins

First payments can sometimes take longer than subsequent ones because EDD does additional verification on new claims. 9 days is getting to the point where it might be worth looking into. Log into UI Online and check if there are any pending issues, messages in your inbox, or if your claim shows anything other than 'paid' status.

0 coins

my status shows 'pending' which I think is normal? or is it not?

0 coins

Pending can mean it's just being processed but it can also mean there's a hold. If it's been 9 days with pending status you might want to try to contact EDD to confirm there's nothing flagged. If you've been trying to call and can't get through, Claimyr (claimyr.com) is a good option - there's a demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. A 9 day pending status on a first payment is worth getting a human to look at.

0 coins

okay I'll try that link. I've been calling and getting nothing but busy signals or disconnected. this is so stressful when I need that money

0 coins

the waiting period thing caught me off guard the first time too. essentially your first certification covers two weeks but week 1 is unpaid (the waiting week). so first payment = 1 week of benefits. every payment after that = 2 weeks. people freak out thinking their payment is wrong but it's just how the first cycle works

0 coins

This is really good to know upfront so I don't panic when that first payment is half what I expected

0 coins

yeah I definitely panicked and spent an hour on hold trying to find out why my payment was 'short' before someone explained the waiting week to me

0 coins

been on unemployment 3 different times in my life (yikes I know) and the payment timing gets way easier to predict after the first couple cycles. once you're in the rhythm of the biweekly certification the payments come pretty consistently. the main thing that disrupts the schedule is if you have any certification issues, job search verification questions, or work earnings that EDD needs to review. when those come up the clock basically restarts on that payment

0 coins

Good to know it gets more predictable. The uncertainty right now is the hardest part.

0 coins

totally. after your third or fourth certification you'll know almost exactly which day your payment hits. hang in there

0 coins

three times on unemployment, you've definitely earned your expertise here lol

0 coins

random question but can you switch from the edd debit card to direct deposit after your claim is already approved? I set up the debit card at first and now I want direct deposit to my bank account

0 coins

Yes you can switch payment methods after your claim is approved. Log into UI Online and go to your payment preferences or profile settings. You can add your bank account information for direct deposit. There can be a delay of one payment cycle before the switch takes effect so your next payment might still go to the debit card while the change processes.

0 coins

perfect thank you, I hate having to go to an ATM to access the card funds

0 coins

Direct deposit is definitely the easier option long term. One tip - when you add your bank account EDD may make small verification deposits to confirm the account, so watch for those.

0 coins

just want to share my experience since it's relevant - I was confused about the weekly vs biweekly thing and accidentally certified for the wrong weeks when I first started. Thought I needed to certify every week so I submitted a certification after one week and it caused a big mess with my claim. EDD had to sort it out and it delayed my payments by almost three weeks. The lesson is: wait for EDD to prompt you to certify, don't try to certify before your two-week period is up

0 coins

Oh wow I probably would have made this same mistake. So you have to wait until EDD opens the certification window, you can't just submit whenever you want?

0 coins

Exactly. UI Online will show you when your certification is available. You can certify any time within that window (you have a certain number of days) but you can't certify before the two-week period is complete. I learned this the hard way.

0 coins

This is a really important point. The UI Online system will literally show a certification as 'not yet available' until your two-week period ends. If you try to certify too early it won't let you through the full process. Always let EDD open the window.

0 coins

yeah the system does prevent you from submitting too early but I found a way to partially submit and it still created issues somehow. Just better to wait until UI Online shows it's ready.

0 coins

To wrap up the core question for anyone finding this thread later: California EDD unemployment is paid on a biweekly schedule. You certify every two weeks through UI Online, by phone, or through the EDD mobile options. Each certification covers two individual weeks. Payment processes within 3-5 business days of certification approval and covers both weeks at your weekly benefit amount. Your very first payment will only cover one week due to the mandatory waiting week. After that, expect biweekly payments covering two weeks each. If payments are delayed or missing, log into UI Online and check your claim status and inbox for any required actions.

0 coins

This is an incredibly helpful thread. Thank you everyone. I feel like I finally understand how EDD payments work. Going to mark my certification dates, set up reminders, and actually track my job search activities properly each week.

0 coins

Good luck! The system is confusing at first but once you get through the first couple cycles it becomes routine. One last tip - never miss your certification window. Missing it doesn't just delay that payment, it can actually interrupt your entire benefit year claim and require you to reopen.

0 coins

Solid advice to close out the thread. And if anyone ever gets stuck and can't reach EDD by phone, claimyr.com really does work for getting through to an agent. Saved me so much time versus the endless redialing.
