How to draw unemployment in California EDD – step by step filing guide
I just got laid off last Friday and I'm trying to figure out how to draw unemployment benefits through California EDD. I've been working at the same warehouse job for almost four years and this is literally the first time I've ever had to deal with any of this. My coworker told me I just go online and fill something out but when I actually got to the EDD website I got completely overwhelmed. There are so many different options and I'm not sure which one applies to me. Do I file a new claim, a reopened claim, or something else? And once I file the initial claim do I have to do something every week to keep getting paid? I've heard terms like adjudication, weekly certifications, job search requirements... honestly I have no idea what any of it means. Can someone walk me through the basic steps of how to draw unemployment in California so I don't mess this up from the start?

Welcome and don't stress too much – the process is more straightforward than the website makes it look. Here's basically how to draw unemployment in California EDD from the beginning: 1. Go to UI Online at portal.edd.ca.gov and select 'File a UI Claim' 2. You'll answer questions about your last employer, your reason for separation, and your work history 3. After submitting, EDD mails you a confirmation and a debit card within 1-2 weeks 4. Starting the Sunday AFTER your filing week, you submit a weekly certification every week to actually get paid The weekly certification is where you confirm you were able and available to work, that you searched for work (usually 3 contacts per week), and report any earnings. Missing a weekly cert means no payment for that week. Good luck!

AuthorThank you! So the weekly certifications are separate from the initial application? I have to actively do something every single week?

Exactly right. Filing the claim just opens your case. The weekly certifications are what trigger actual payments. Think of it like clocking in for your benefits each week.

this is accurate. don't skip certifying even while waiting for adjudication to resolve or you'll lose those weeks

One thing nobody tells you upfront: file your initial claim as fast as humanly possible. California EDD has a waiting week (the first week you're eligible doesn't get paid) and your claim effective date is set to the Sunday of the week you file. So every day you delay potentially costs you money. I waited almost two weeks after being laid off thinking I should 'get organized first' and I lost out on real money because of that.

AuthorOh wow I did not know about the waiting week thing. I've already been sitting on this for 5 days. Going to file tonight.

same happened to me, filed late and lost my first week plus the waiting week. just file asap people

The waiting week has actually been reinstated after being waived during COVID years. So yes, you will have one unpaid week regardless but filing immediately minimizes further delays.

After you file, you'll probably end up needing to contact EDD at some point – whether it's because your claim goes into adjudication or something doesn't look right on your account. I want to flag this early because the phone lines are absolutely brutal. I spent three weeks trying to reach someone. Eventually a friend told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) – it basically navigates the EDD phone system on your behalf and gets you connected to a live agent. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see before trying. Saved me so much frustration.

AuthorGood to know in advance. My coworker tried calling EDD for weeks and never got through. I'll keep this in mind if I hit a wall.

Claimyr worked for me too when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Got connected to an agent within the same day which I definitely couldn't do on my own calling.

is it legit though? seems sketchy to use a third party for government stuff

Amara Nwosu
Totally legit – it just handles the phone queue part, no different than using a callback service. You still talk directly to EDD when connected.

To answer your specific question about which type of claim to file: since this is your first time and you just got laid off, you want to file a NEW claim, not a reopen. A reopen is only for people who previously had a claim and it expired or they went back to work and are now unemployed again. Since you've never filed before, new claim is correct. Also make sure you have your employer's full legal name, address, and your last date of work ready before you start the application. The system times out if you take too long gathering info mid-application and you may have to start over.

Carmen Flores
AuthorReally appreciate the heads up about the timeout! I'll get all that info ready first. My employer is a large company so I should be able to find their legal name online.

Also have your total gross wages handy if you can pull your pay stubs. EDD asks about your highest quarter earnings and having that ready speeds things up a lot.

wait does everyone have to do 3 job searches per week?? i thought it was more like once a week
0 coins
Mei Liu
Current requirement is 3 employer contacts per week for most claimants. It's been 3 since they updated the rules post-pandemic. You need to keep a record of each contact in case EDD audits your job search activity.

Giovanni Moretti
oh dang ok. what counts as a contact tho

Andre Dubois
Submitting a resume online, applying through a company website, attending a job fair, reaching out to a recruiter – all of these count. You just need to record the employer name, contact method, and date in your job search log.

I went through this exact thing 8 months ago and the part that tripped me up the most was adjudication. After I filed my new claim it went into 'pending adjudication' for almost 3 weeks because my employer apparently disputed the reason for my separation. During adjudication you might not receive any payments and there's nothing you can do except keep certifying every week. Those certifications will be backdated once the issue resolves so don't stop filing them. I made the mistake of thinking 'why bother if I'm not getting paid' and I lost two weeks because of that.

Carmen Flores
AuthorThat's terrifying honestly. How do you know if you're in adjudication? Does the website tell you?
0 coins
CyberSamurai
Yes, on UI Online your claim status will show something like 'pending' or 'eligibility issue' and there may be a notice explaining what's being reviewed. Check your inbox on UI Online and your physical mail.

Mine showed 'adjudication in progress' for 5 weeks and then suddenly got approved with all back payments. The wait is brutal but it does resolve if you were legitimately laid off.

honestly the whole thing is confusing af, I remember when I first tried to draw unemployment I filled out the wrong sections like three times and kept getting error messages. just go slow and read every single question carefully. some of the wording is really weird and if you answer wrong it can cause issues you have to fix later

Carmen Flores
AuthorGood advice. What kind of questions tripped you up?

the one about 'are you still attached to your employer' – I thought it meant like was I still emotionally connected to the job lol. it actually means do you have a return to work date. I said yes when I should have said no and it caused a whole issue

The EDD website is an absolute DISASTER. I don't understand how in 2025 a state agency still has a system that freezes, errors out, and logs you out randomly. Filed my initial claim three times before it actually went through. And then got zero communication for two weeks. Zero. Not even a confirmation email. I had to assume it worked and just start certifying on faith. The system is broken and everyone who works there knows it and nobody cares.

Harsh but not wrong. Pro tip: screenshot or save your confirmation number the moment you get it. That's your proof the claim was submitted if anything goes sideways.

AuthorThis is stressing me out lol. I'm going to do it from a desktop computer, not my phone, and just move really slowly through each screen.

Desktop browser is definitely the way to go. Chrome seemed most stable for me. Avoid doing it from a phone.

Something important about how to draw unemployment that nobody mentions in the official guides: your payment method. EDD automatically issues a Bank of America debit card called the EDD Debit Card. You'll get it in the mail before your first payment but you need to activate it when it arrives. If you want direct deposit instead you have to manually set that up through UI Online after your claim is established. A lot of people wait for a check that's never coming because they don't realize payments go to a card.
0 coins
Carmen Flores
AuthorOh wow I totally would have waited for a check. Thank you for saying that!
0 coins
Andre Dubois
Yes, the debit card setup has confused so many people. Definitely activate it immediately when it arrives and consider setting up direct deposit if you'd rather have funds in your own bank account.
0 coins
AstroExplorer
how long does the card take to arrive after you file?
0 coins
Amara Nwosu
Usually 7-10 business days after your claim is approved. But you won't get any money on it until your first certified week is processed, which takes a few more days after you submit the certification.

For the job search requirements specifically – California EDD requires you to be actively looking for work that's comparable to what you were doing before. You can't just apply to anything random and if EDD ever audits your log they can disqualify you if your search looks like you're not genuinely trying. Keep your job search activities in a spreadsheet or notebook with dates, company names, positions, and how you applied. I've heard of people getting hit with disqualification notices and even overpayment demands because they got lazy with documentation.

Carmen Flores
AuthorDoes EDD actually audit this regularly or is it more like a random check thing?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Farsi
From what I understand it's somewhat random but can also be triggered if something in your claim looks unusual. Better to just be thorough from the start than scramble to reconstruct records later.

Mei Liu
Correct. CalJOBS is the state job search platform and registering there can satisfy some of your job search activity requirements. EDD may also refer you to use it if you're on a longer claim.

can someone tell me what standby status means? I keep seeing it mentioned and I thought drawing unemployment meant you had to look for jobs but standby seems different
0 coins
Mei Liu
Standby is a special status for people who have a definite return-to-work date within 60 days – like if you were temporarily laid off and your employer told you you'd be called back. On standby you don't have to do the regular job search requirements because you're expected to return to your job. It's not the default though, you have to specifically request standby status and EDD has to approve it.

Sofia Perez
ohh ok that makes sense. I have no return date so regular UI is what I need. thanks

CyberSamurai
Right, standby is basically for temporary layoffs. Regular UI with job search requirements is what most people drawing unemployment will be doing.

Circling back on the phone issue because it comes up for almost everyone eventually: after I finally got through to EDD using Claimyr, the agent actually walked me through my pending issues in about 15 minutes. Stuff that had been sitting for weeks got resolved in one call. The service at claimyr.com connects you to a real EDD agent – there's no magic, it just handles the hold queue torture. For anyone about to start drawing unemployment for the first time, bookmark it before you need it.

It really is the difference between waiting on hold for 3 hours and actually speaking to someone. The EDD phone system is basically designed to make you give up.

Don't forget about the SDI vs UI thing. I made this mistake – I was out of work because of a health issue and I filed for regular unemployment when I actually should have filed for State Disability Insurance. They're completely separate programs and if you file the wrong one you have to start over. If you were laid off like OP said then UI is correct but just wanted to flag it since some people in similar situations get confused.
0 coins
Carmen Flores
AuthorThat's a really good distinction to know. I was definitely laid off, no health issues involved, so regular UI should be right for me.
0 coins
Mei Liu
Good flag. To be clear: UI (unemployment insurance) is for when you lose your job through no fault of your own. SDI is when you can't work due to your own illness, injury, or pregnancy. PFL (Paid Family Leave) is when you need to care for a family member. Three very different programs through EDD but people mix them up constantly.

AstroExplorer
how long does it actually take to get your first payment after you file? I'm asking for a friend who just got laid off last week and is freaking out about rent
0 coins
Andre Dubois
Realistically, from the date you file to first payment is usually 3-4 weeks if everything goes smoothly. That includes the waiting week, processing time, and the first certification period. If there's any adjudication it takes longer. EDD isn't fast unfortunately.
0 coins
AstroExplorer
ugh 3-4 weeks is rough. is there any way to speed it up
0 coins
Zoe Alexopoulos
File immediately if they haven't yet, certify on the exact day the certification window opens (Sunday morning), and make sure ID verification is done right away if EDD flags it through ID.me. Those are the main things you can control.
0 coins
CyberSamurai
Also make sure the employer info is exactly right when filing. Discrepancies between what you report and what your employer reports is one of the biggest causes of adjudication delays.

I've been drawing unemployment before and the thing I wish someone had told me was about the earnings reporting during certifications. Even if you do any small amount of part time work while on UI you HAVE to report those earnings. Like even $50 of babysitting money. If EDD finds out you worked and didn't report it they can issue an overpayment notice and make you pay everything back plus penalties. Not worth the risk.
0 coins
Carmen Flores
AuthorNoted – I wasn't planning to work during this time but good to know the rule either way.

ElectricDreamer
Also just to clarify – earning money doesn't necessarily disqualify you. EDD has a partial benefits formula where you can earn up to 25% of your weekly benefit amount before your payment starts getting reduced dollar for dollar. So sometimes it's actually worth working part time.
0 coins
Mei Liu
That's accurate. The formula is your weekly benefit amount minus any earnings above 25% of your WBA. So you can do some work without losing all benefits. Just always report everything.

This thread is making me feel so much better about starting my claim tomorrow honestly. I've been putting it off for like 10 days because I was scared I'd do something wrong and get in trouble. But it sounds like as long as you report everything honestly and keep certifying you'll be okay?
0 coins
Andre Dubois
Yes exactly. The system rewards honesty and consistency. File everything accurately, certify every week without skipping, report any earnings, document your job search, and respond promptly to any EDD notices. That's basically the whole thing.

random but does anyone know if you can draw unemployment if you quit? My neighbor says she's going to quit her job because her boss is horrible and then file. I told her that's not how it works but she doesn't believe me
0 coins
Mei Liu
You generally cannot draw unemployment if you voluntarily quit without good cause. 'Good cause' in California EDD terms means things like constructive discharge (employer made conditions so intolerable that a reasonable person would quit), medical necessity, domestic violence, or relocation for a spouse's job. Hating your boss typically doesn't qualify unless there's documented harassment or illegal conduct. Your neighbor should be careful.
0 coins
Miguel Diaz
Yeah that's what I thought. She's going to be real surprised when she gets denied.
0 coins
Dylan Cooper
EDD will contact the employer as part of the claims process and they'll absolutely say she quit voluntarily. Her claim would go into adjudication and almost certainly get denied unless she has documented proof of hostile work conditions.

OP I just want to add something nobody mentioned yet – after you file your new claim, watch your physical mail AND your UI Online inbox very carefully for the first few weeks. EDD sometimes sends notices with short response deadlines (like 10 days) asking you to respond to eligibility questions. If you miss the deadline your claim can be denied and you have to appeal. I missed one notice because I wasn't checking and it caused a 6 week delay in my payments.
0 coins
Carmen Flores
AuthorThis is really important, thank you. I'll set up text alerts on my UI Online account if that's an option and check both the site inbox and my actual mailbox every few days.
0 coins
Zainab Ahmed
Yes, you can set up email notifications in UI Online settings which helps. But physical mail is still used for a lot of official notices so don't rely only on email.
0 coins
Liam O'Donnell
And if you do miss a deadline and need to explain your situation or request a hearing, that's another scenario where getting through to an EDD agent quickly matters. Claimyr helped me get that conversation resolved fast when I had a similar deadline issue.
0 coins
Andre Dubois
Appeals are absolutely possible if you miss a deadline for good reason. The appeal window is 30 days from the decision date. But ideally catch the notices before it gets to that point.

Just wanted to share a quick success story for encouragement: filed my new California EDD claim about 6 weeks ago after being laid off from a restaurant job. Was honestly terrified reading all the horror stories. But mine actually went pretty smoothly – approved within 8 days, no adjudication, debit card came in the mail, first payment hit within 3 days of my first certification. Not everyone has a nightmare experience. Good luck to everyone here learning how to draw unemployment for the first time.
