How do I know if my unemployment claim was approved with California EDD?
I filed my initial unemployment claim about two weeks ago and I genuinely have no idea what's happening with it. I check UI Online every single day and the status page just shows some vague wording that doesn't tell me anything concrete. I'm a former warehouse logistics coordinator - got laid off when my company restructured their distribution network - and this is actually my first time ever dealing with California EDD so I have no clue what to look for. Like, what does an approved claim actually look like on the portal? Does it say 'approved' somewhere obvious or is it buried in some submenu I haven't found yet? And what about the benefit year begin date vs the claim start date - are those the same thing? I did get a confirmation number when I first submitted but nothing since then. I've been too scared to file my weekly certifications because I don't want to mess something up before the claim is officially processed. Someone please help me understand what I should be seeing right now.

oh you definitely should be filing your weekly certifications already!! don't wait for an approval notice before doing that. the weeks you don't certify are weeks you won't get paid even if your claim does get approved later

Authorwait seriously?? nobody told me that. so I've potentially missed two weeks of payments just sitting here waiting?

Yes this is correct. Weekly certifications are independent from the approval process. You can and should certify every week while your claim is under review. If it gets approved those weeks will be paid retroactively.

To actually answer your question about how to know if your unemployment claim was approved - here's what to look for in UI Online. When you log into your myEDD account and navigate to UI Online, you want to check a few specific things. First look at your Claim Status page - if it says 'Claim filed' that means it's still being processed. If your claim gets approved you'll typically see your payment status change and you'll be able to see a benefit award amount listed. You should also be getting a Notice of Determination letter either in the mail or through your myEDD inbox. That letter is the official confirmation. It will explicitly state whether you've been approved or denied, what your weekly benefit amount is, and your benefit year dates. The portal itself can be confusing because it doesn't always use the word 'approved' in big letters somewhere obvious.

AuthorThank you! I just checked my myEDD inbox and there's nothing there. Does it take longer than two weeks usually to get that notice?

two weeks is actually pretty normal processing time. some people wait 3-4 weeks especially right now. but definitely keep certifying weekly in the meantime

The benefit year begin date and claim start date ARE different btw. Benefit year is the 12 month period your claim covers. Your actual payment eligibility start date depends on when they process the claim and your base period wages.

I was in almost the exact same situation four months ago - first time filing, had no idea what was happening, checking the portal obsessively. The thing that finally gave me clarity was actually getting someone from California EDD on the phone. The portal status descriptions are genuinely unhelpful, especially when you're new to this. A real agent can tell you exactly where your claim stands and whether there's anything flagged that needs your attention. Problem is getting through to an actual person is a nightmare. I tried calling for almost two weeks straight, never got past the hold music. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr - it's a service that basically navigates the phone system and holds your place in line, then calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of redialing. You can check it out at claimyr.com or watch how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. The agent I finally reached confirmed my claim was approved and told me exactly when my first payment would hit.

seconded on claimyr, used it last year when my claim got stuck and it was the only way I could actually get answers

does that actually work though? I feel like California EDD phone lines are just permanently broken lol

It really does work - the key is it keeps you connected through the hold queue instead of you having to manually redial over and over. When I used it I got a callback from an EDD agent within a couple hours

THE PORTAL IS USELESS don't even get me started. I filed in January and spent three weeks staring at the same 'claim filed' status thinking something was wrong with my application. Turns out my claim was approved but the portal just... never updated clearly? I only found out because a letter showed up in my physical mailbox. Make sure your mailing address on file with EDD is current because that Notice of Determination is what you actually need

Ethan Anderson
AuthorOh no I moved recently - do you think that could be causing a delay?

YES call them immediately or update your address in myEDD settings. If notices are going to an old address that can seriously mess up your timeline and appeal windows

This is a really important point. Log into myEDD right now and verify your address before anything else. There's a profile/settings section where you can update contact info.

Here's a breakdown of what the different status indicators in UI Online generally mean so you know what you're looking at. 'Claim filed' - submitted but not yet processed. 'Payment issued' - this is what you want to see, means a payment has been sent. 'Pending' next to a specific week - that certification week is still being reviewed. 'Disqualified' - there's a problem and you may need to appeal. If your claim was approved you should also be able to see your weekly benefit amount (WBA) listed somewhere in the claim details section. The absence of a WBA showing up is sometimes a sign your claim hasn't been fully processed yet.
0 coins
Ethan Anderson
AuthorI can see my claim details but there's no WBA listed anywhere. Does that mean I'm in trouble?
0 coins
Lucas Notre-Dame
Not necessarily trouble, could just mean it's still processing. The two week mark isn't unusual. Give it until the end of week three and if still nothing, you really need to call EDD or take other steps to check status

Layla Mendes
same thing happened to me, no WBA for like 18 days then suddenly everything appeared at once and I had multiple weeks queued for payment

just to add to what others said - check your spam folder and your actual physical mail. I get so many people asking this and like 40% of the time the approval notice already arrived and they missed it. EDD sends everything by mail unless you opted into electronic notices AND even then sometimes physical copies still get sent

Authorchecked spam, nothing. But I did just realize I haven't checked physical mail in like 5 days lol going now

I remember being so confused about this exact thing. One thing nobody mentions - after your claim gets approved you'll receive an EDD Debit Card in the mail from Bank of America if you don't have direct deposit set up. That card arriving is another sign your claim went through. Takes about a week after approval to arrive typically
0 coins
Alexander Zeus
good point, I forgot about the debit card thing. That was actually my first signal that my claim was approved before any letter came
0 coins
Chloe Boulanger
Technically the card gets triggered when a payment is actually issued not just when the claim is approved. But yeah it's a good practical indicator that things are moving in the right direction
0 coins
Drake
wait so if the claim is approved do they pay back all the weeks you waited or only from when you started certifying
0 coins
Aria Park
They pay from whenever you started certifying, which is why it's so critical to start certifying immediately after filing and not wait. Each certification covers a specific two-week period and if you don't certify for a week, that week is generally gone.
0 coins
Lucas Notre-Dame
There are some limited exceptions where you can request to backfill missed certifications but it requires contacting EDD directly and explaining the situation. Not guaranteed to work.

oh that's rough. so OP might have actually lost those first two weeks?

AuthorYeah I might have unfortunately. I'm going to call and ask about getting those weeks added but not holding my breath

honestly the california EDD approval process is so opaque it should be illegal. like you're filing for money you need to survive and the best they can do is make you check a confusing portal and wait for snail mail? every other state I've heard of has better notifications. my buddy in oregon gets text updates automatically
0 coins
Alicia Stern
I mean you're not wrong but also comparing to other states is kind of pointless, we're stuck with what we've got here

James Martinez
This is exactly why being proactive about calling and checking in matters. The system won't come to you with answers.

Something worth knowing: when you call California EDD to check your claim status, the automated phone system can actually give you some basic info without needing to talk to an agent. If you call the main UI number and navigate through the prompts you can sometimes hear your claim status and last payment info. It won't give you everything but it might tell you enough to know if your claim got approved without needing to wait on hold for an agent.
0 coins
Ethan Anderson
AuthorI tried the automated system and it said something about my claim being in process but didn't give specifics. Still helpful to know it's at least moving
0 coins
Chloe Boulanger
yeah the automated system is limited but at least it's something. If it ever says 'no active claim found' that's when you'd really need to escalate

Going through this right now with my partner's claim. They got laid off from a restaurant job and filed three weeks ago. The UI Online portal shows nothing useful and they're panicking. I've been trying to call EDD for them but can't get through at all. Might try that Claimyr service someone mentioned above - at this point we just need to know if there's a problem with the claim or if it's just slow. Has anyone used it recently, like in 2025? Want to make sure it still works
0 coins
James Martinez
I used it in February this year and it still worked fine. Got connected to an agent who was able to look up the claim status directly. Worth trying if you're stuck in the phone loop.

For anyone finding this thread later - here's a complete checklist for how to know if your California EDD unemployment claim was approved. 1) Check your myEDD inbox for a Notice of Determination letter. 2) Check your physical mailbox - EDD sends paper notices too. 3) Log into UI Online and look for your Weekly Benefit Amount to appear in your claim details. 4) Check if you can see payment history or pending payments. 5) If you set up direct deposit or will receive an EDD debit card, watch for activity there. 6) Call EDD directly or use a service like Claimyr (claimyr.com) to reach an agent who can give you a direct answer. Most importantly - do NOT wait to start filing weekly certifications while you wait for approval confirmation.

slightly different situation but related - I got approved and then my payments stopped after week 4 with no explanation. is that a normal thing that happens or should I be worried. don't want to hijack this thread but seemed related

Aria Park
That's actually a pretty common issue and worth its own post. It could be a few things - sometimes claims get flagged for a mid-claim eligibility review, or there could be an issue with one of your weekly certifications that triggered a hold. Check your UI Online for any notices or flags on specific weeks.
0 coins
Sebastian Scott
there IS a flag on one of my weeks that says pending - figured that was normal but now I'm thinking maybe not
0 coins
Lucas Notre-Dame
A pending flag on a specific week usually means that week is under review, which is different from your overall claim status. You likely need to call EDD to find out why that week is held. Might be worth using a phone service to get through since these things can drag on if not resolved.
0 coins
Gabriel Graham
Also make sure you understand your base period wages because that determines your weekly benefit amount once approved. EDD calculates your WBA based on the highest quarter of earnings in your base period. If your approved WBA seems lower than expected that's the math they used and you can request a recomputation if you think it's wrong
0 coins
Ethan Anderson
AuthorI didn't even know you could dispute the WBA amount. Good to know in case mine comes back weird
0 coins
Gabriel Graham
Yes you have to request it within a certain window though - I think it's pretty soon after you get the approval notice so don't sit on it if you think the amount is off

so confused reading this thread lol. is adjudication the same thing as the claim just being reviewed or is adjudication only when theres a problem
0 coins
Aria Park
Good question. Adjudication specifically refers to when there's an issue or question about your eligibility that EDD needs to investigate before making a determination. It's a more formal review process triggered by things like your former employer contesting your claim, unclear separation circumstances, or other eligibility questions. A claim that goes into adjudication takes longer than a standard review. Regular processing is just EDD verifying your wages and eligibility criteria, which is what most claims go through.
0 coins
Emily Sanjay
ohh okay so adjudication is actually worse than just regular processing. that makes more sense now
0 coins
Chloe Boulanger
Right, adjudication = there's a specific eligibility question that needs to be resolved before they can approve or deny. If your claim goes into adjudication you'll usually get a notice asking for information or an interview.

OP I'm really glad you posted this because I was literally about to post the same exact question. Filed my claim 10 days ago after being let go from my tech job and have been staring at the portal daily wondering if the vague status message means approved or not. One thing I haven't seen mentioned - if you're in a situation where you really need status clarity fast, you can also try visiting an EDD office in person. They've reduced walk-in hours post-COVID but some offices still handle certain situations in person. It's not always faster than calling but sometimes having a physical presence helps move things along. You'd need to check the EDD website for your local office hours.

Alicia Stern
I tried this and honestly the in-person experience was hit or miss. The one near me basically just told me to call the phone number. But I've heard some offices are more helpful than others.
0 coins
Natalie Adams
Yeah it's definitely location dependent. Some offices will actually pull up your claim and walk you through it, others are basically just referral desks at this point.

Another tip for anyone trying to figure out their claim status: the EDD also has an online chat option in myEDD called 'Ask EDD' - it's not a live chat with a real person, it's more of a knowledge base search, but sometimes it can point you to the right forms or tell you what a specific status message means. Won't tell you your personal claim status but can help decode confusing portal language

Ethan Anderson
AuthorI actually tried Ask EDD and it was pretty useless for my specific situation but I can see how it might help for general questions

I got through to California EDD after weeks of trying and the agent confirmed my claim was approved AND fixed an issue I didn't even know I had - apparently one of my weekly certifications had a flag because I answered one of the questions slightly wrong and it triggered a hold. The agent cleared it right there on the call. That's why talking to an actual human makes such a difference. For anyone who's been trying to get through, I used Claimyr after exhausting all other options and it finally worked. Site is claimyr.com, and there's a demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 showing exactly how it works before you decide if you want to use it.
