Stuck in 'pending' status after part-time job certification - Will EDD call me?
Hi everyone, I applied for unemployment benefits about 2 weeks ago since I'm currently just on-call and working part-time or less at my job. I was able to complete my first certification, but my payment status is still showing as 'pending' in the system. I haven't received my EDD debit card yet either. I'm not sure what happens next - will EDD call me for an interview? Should I call them to check on my claim status? Do I need to order the card myself or will it come automatically? This is my first time filing for partial unemployment while still working some hours, so I'm confused about the process. Any advice would be really appreciated!

The 'pending' status is normal for new claims, especially for part-time workers. EDD needs to verify your eligibility since you're still working some hours. They might schedule an eligibility interview to determine if your reduced hours qualify you for benefits. The Money Network debit card will be mailed automatically after your first payment is approved - but that won't happen until your claim moves from pending to paid status. You don't need to order the card separately. I recommend waiting one more week. If your status is still pending after 3 weeks total, then you should definitely call EDD to check what's happening with your claim. Sometimes partial employment claims take longer to process because they need to verify your work and earnings information.

•Thank you so much for the detailed information! That helps a lot. I'll wait another week then. Do you know if they'll notify me ahead of time if they schedule an eligibility interview? I'm worried about missing their call.

•4 weeks? Wow, that's a long time to wait. Did you ever try calling them or did you just wait it out? I'm trying to be patient but bills are coming due soon.

I went through this exact situation in January. The key issue with part-time/on-call claims is that EDD has to verify that your reduced hours weren't your choice (which would make you ineligible). In my experience, about 70% of these claims require an eligibility interview. They should send you a notice in UI Online and via mail with the interview date/time at least 5-7 days in advance. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in the system. One important tip: document your work schedule for each week showing the reduced hours. Have this ready for the interview. Also keep track of any communications from your employer about the reduction in available work. This will speed up your claim processing significantly.

•This is really helpful information, thank you! I'll start gathering those documents right away. My employer definitely reduced my hours - it wasn't my choice at all. I hope they don't take the full 4 weeks like someone else mentioned.

dont stress too much about it! EDD is ALWAYS slow. my first payment took 3 weeks to go from pending to paid and i never even got an interview. the card just showed up in my mailbox one day. just make sure u keep certifying even while pending!!

If you really need to check on your claim status, good luck getting through to EDD. I tried calling them for 2 weeks straight when my claim was stuck in pending - couldn't get through ONCE. Always "too many callers" or disconnected. EVENTUALLY I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD rep in like 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Might be worth it if you get desperate after waiting another week. The rep I spoke to was able to tell me exactly why my claim was pending and what I needed to do to fix it.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU GIVE UP!!! They put everything "pending" hoping you'll just go away and not collect benefits you DESERVE. I had a similar situation (part-time hours) and they made me wait SIX WEEKS with no explanation. You have to FIGHT for your rights with EDD. Call them EVERY DAY until someone helps you. Don't let them ignore your claim!!!!!

•Six weeks? That's terrible! I really hope mine doesn't take that long. I definitely need these benefits to cover my basic expenses while my hours are reduced.

My sister works in HR and she told me that part-time claims with ongoing employment are flagged for extra review because they're worried about fraud. The pending status is just part of that review process. As long as you reported your hours and earnings accurately when you certified, you should be fine. It just takes time. My claim was pending for about 3.5 weeks before it changed to paid.

One more thing I forgot to mention - make sure you're answering the certification questions correctly for part-time work. When it asks if you refused any work, make sure you select "No" (assuming that's true). And when it asks if you worked, select "Yes" and report all earnings for that week, even if they were small. Incorrect answers to these questions are a common reason for payment delays.

•Yes, I did report my work and earnings accurately. I worked 8 hours one week and 11 the next, and I reported the exact amounts I earned. I'll keep doing that for future certifications too. Thanks for the reminder!

Based on what you've shared, it sounds like your claim is following the normal timeline. Two weeks is actually not unusual for the initial pending status, especially for part-time claims. The Money Network card will be automatically sent after your first payment is approved, so you don't need to order it separately. If you don't see any movement by the end of next week (so 3 weeks total), then it would be appropriate to contact EDD. At that point, you'd be outside the normal processing window for even complex claims.
