EDD Phone Interview No-Show But Status Changed to Paid - Money Network Card Questions
So confused right now! I had my eligibility interview scheduled for today at 2:30 PM. Took the day off from job searching, made sure my phone was charged, and waited by it for over an hour. No call came through. I was starting to panic thinking I somehow missed it, but then I checked my UI Online account and noticed my status changed from 'pending' to 'paid' for the last 3 weeks! I've never received unemployment before - do they automatically mail you that Money Network debit card thing? Or do I need to call EDD to request it? Not sure if the interview was canceled because they decided I'm eligible or if there was a glitch. Anyone else experience this? How long does the card usually take to arrive? I'm really tight on cash after being laid off from my hospital admin job last month.

This actually happens more often than you'd think! When they determine you're eligible before the interview time, they sometimes just approve your claim without calling. The Money Network card is automatically sent out once your first payment is processed. You don't need to call to request it. Should arrive within 7-10 business days. If you haven't received it after 2 weeks, then you should contact them. Also, you can set up direct deposit through UI Online if you prefer that over the card.

•Oh thank goodness! I was sitting here stressing thinking I did something wrong. That makes so much sense - they must've reviewed my case beforehand and decided they didn't need to interview me. Such a relief! I'll wait for the card then. Is setting up direct deposit difficult? I'd honestly prefer that.

•That's reassuring! Thanks for sharing your experience. Guess I'll just keep checking my mailbox. Did they send you any kind of notification when they shipped the card?

They're SUPPOSED to call for these interviews but EDD is buried in claims right now. I've seen this happen to like 5 people in my Facebook unemployment group this month alone. Sometimes they approve you if your employer doesn't contest the claim or if your documentation is super clear-cut. The Money Network card ships automatically but FYI they don't tell you when it's coming. It just shows up in a plain envelope that kinda looks like junk mail so CHECK YOUR MAIL CAREFULLY! I almost threw mine away thinking it was a credit card offer lol.

•Omg thank you for the warning about the envelope! I definitely would have thought it was junk mail too. I'll check every piece of mail carefully from now on.

•While it's always good to be cautious, what you're describing is pretty rare. Once a payment shows as 'paid,' it's almost always final. The system might switch temporarily during processing, but a fully processed 'paid' status usually means the money has been released. No need to create extra anxiety about something that rarely happens.

If you need to reach EDD to confirm anything or check on your card status, I highly recommend using Claimyr. I spent WEEKS trying to get through on my own with no luck. Claimyr got me connected to an EDD agent in about 20 minutes after trying for days on my own. Totally worth it when you need to talk to someone. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km or just go to claimyr.com - seriously saved me so much frustration when I had a similar situation with a missed interview.

I had the EXACT same situation in January! Here's what happened: I was scheduled for a phone interview because I had indicated that I was fired (which was technically true, but it was part of a mass layoff). The EDD officer reviewed my case file before the scheduled interview, determined I was clearly eligible based on the employer's report, and simply approved my claim without needing the interview. The Money Network card came about 8 days later for me. One tip: When you get the card, immediately create an account on the Money Network website and download their app. It makes tracking your funds WAY easier, and you can transfer money to your bank account for free instead of paying ATM fees. You can also set up alerts so you know when new payments hit the card.

•That's EXACTLY what happened to me - mass layoff but technically fired. Good to know they process these types of cases quickly. Thank you for the tip about the Money Network website and app! Will definitely set that up as soon as I get the card. Didn't know about the free transfers to bank accounts - that's super helpful.

Wait so they just marked you paid without even interviewing you??? I had my interview and they still put me on pending for like 3 more weeks! WTH is wrong with EDD??!! This system is completely random and unfair. Some people get instant approval and others like me get stuck in pending hell forever even after doing everything right and having a valid claim. I'm on week 6 of pending after my interview. This is beyond frustrating.

•Your situation sounds frustrating, but there's actually a method to how claims are processed. Claims that are straightforward (like mass layoffs with no disputes from employers) often get automatic approval. Claims that have more complex eligibility questions or where the employer contests the claim require more thorough review. It's not random - it's just that everyone's situation is different. Have you tried calling to ask specifically what's holding up your claim? There might be a simple issue you could resolve.

UPDATE: My Money Network card arrived today! That was only 6 days after my status changed to paid. The envelope really did look like junk mail - plain white with very little indication of what was inside. I've set up the online account and app like someone suggested. Already transferred my funds to my regular bank account! Thanks everyone for your help and advice. Such a relief to have this sorted out!

•Awesome! Glad it worked out for you. Just remember to keep certifying for benefits every two weeks even if you're receiving payments. A lot of people forget and then their claims get messed up. The UI Online system will remind you when it's time to certify again.
