EDD payment received same day as eligibility interview - what does this mean?

So confused right now! I had my eligibility phone interview with EDD last Friday (Feb 16th) and the interviewer told me it would take approximately 7 days for them to make a decision on my claim. But then something weird happened - that SAME NIGHT I got a notification that I received a payment to my account! I'm not complaining about getting money faster, but I'm really confused about what this means. Does receiving payment automatically mean my claim was approved? I checked my UI Online inbox expecting to see some kind of official approval message, but there's nothing there. Is this normal? Should I be concerned that something is wrong with my claim? Has anyone else had their payment processed immediately after their eligibility interview?

This is actually a good sign! In my experience, when EDD releases payment before sending an official determination notice, it almost always means your claim was approved. The system sometimes processes the payment before updating the status messages in your inbox. Standard procedure is that you wouldn't receive payment if you were denied, so I'd take this as unofficial confirmation. You'll probably get the official determination letter in your inbox within a few days, but it's mostly a formality at this point. Congrats!

Oh thank goodness! That's such a relief to hear. I was worried that maybe it was some kind of automatic payment that would get reversed later. Do you know if I should wait for the official determination before I certify for my next weeks?

I wouldn't celebrate just yet. EDD systems are NOTORIOUSLY glitchy. I had something similar happen where I got paid after an interview but then 3 weeks later got a disqualification notice and had to REPAY EVERYTHING!!! Make sure you keep checking your inbox for the official determination and DON'T SPEND THE MONEY until you're 100% sure. The EDD giveth and the EDD taketh away...

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did you appeal the disqualification? What happened with your case?

Yeah I appealed and eventually won after 2 months of stress and paperwork. Just saying be careful - EDD's left hand doesn't know what the right is doing half the time. Keep checking your inbox daily.

Payment after an eligibility interview typically indicates approval. The EDD representative who conducted your interview likely made a determination immediately after your call and approved your claim on the spot, which triggered the payment system. The official determination letter is often sent later through a separate automated process. This timing gap between payment and notification is common in the current EDD system. You should continue certifying for benefits on your regular schedule. If you see "No Weeks Available" on your certification page, that's normal after receiving payments - it just means you're caught up on certifications until your next available week. If you want to confirm your claim status, I recommend using Claimyr to connect with an EDD representative quickly. Their service helps you get through the phone lines to speak with an actual person. You can check them out at claimyr.com or see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Much better than waiting and wondering.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll keep certifying as normal then. It's reassuring to know this is a common timing issue. I've been stressing out for nothing!

I tried Claimyr last month when my claim was stuck in pending for weeks. Actually did get through to someone at EDD in like 20 minutes instead of calling for days. The rep fixed my issue on the spot. Just another option if ur worried.

What tipe of claim are you on??? This matters becase UI and SDI have different procceses for aproval. I had a SDI claim last year and everything worked different than when I had regular unemployment before that. My daugter got pai after her interview for regular UI but for SDI they send a letter first usually.

I'm on regular UI, not SDI. I lost my marketing job when the company downsized. Thanks for pointing that out - it sounds like different types of claims have different processes.

So I went through this EXACT situation in January! Had my interview on a Tuesday, payment hit my card that night, then got the determination letter in my inbox 5 days later. The interview person must have approved you right after the call. They tell everyone the "7 day" line but when they know right away, they process it right away. You're good!

That's exactly my situation! Thanks for sharing - it really helps knowing someone else experienced the same thing and it turned out fine.

This is a good point. New claimants are automatically issued a Money Network debit card unless they specifically set up direct deposit. The card comes in a very plain envelope that looks like junk mail, so many people miss it.

It went to direct deposit - I set that up when I first filed my claim. But thanks for the heads-up, I could totally see myself missing something that looks like junk mail!
