EDD eligibility interview for unreported wages ended with payment - what's happening?

Had my EDD eligibility interview today about unreported wages from my part-time job in 2023. The interviewer was super stern and barely talked while I explained that I genuinely didn't realize I needed to report those small gig jobs (was only about $2,700 total). I was sweating bullets the whole time! When we finished, he just said 'you'll receive appeal paperwork in the mail' and hung up - which I took to mean I was disqualified. But now I'm REALLY confused because I just checked my UI Online account and all my pending weeks from the last month suddenly switched to PAID status about 3 hours after the interview. Did anyone else have this happen? Does this mean they actually approved my claim even though they mentioned appeal paperwork? I'm afraid to get my hopes up that the money will actually hit my card if they're still planning to disqualify me.

This is actually pretty common with EDD. The interviewer was likely just following protocol by mentioning the appeal paperwork, which they send to everyone regardless of the decision. The fact that your payments went from pending to paid is a very good sign! It typically means the interviewer ruled in your favor and determined that your unreported wages weren't a deliberate attempt to defraud EDD, especially since it was a relatively small amount. You'll still get a written determination in the mail, but the payment status changing is basically the system implementing their decision. The money should hit your card within 24-48 hours.

Wow really?? That's a huge relief! The guy was so cold on the phone I was convinced I was getting disqualified. Do you think they might still hit me with any penalties later or ask for some of the money back?

I went through this exact scenario in January. The appeal form they're referring to is actually the Notice of Determination, which EDD sends regardless of whether they found in your favor or against you. When your weeks switch from pending to paid, that's the EDD system implementing the interviewer's decision - which in your case was clearly favorable. The interviewer might have sounded stern, but they're trained to maintain a neutral demeanor during these interviews. They're mostly looking for willful misrepresentation vs. honest mistakes. Since you were forthcoming and the amount was relatively small, they likely determined it was an honest oversight. You'll receive an official notice in 7-10 days explaining the decision, but you can relax - your money should post to your EDD debit card or direct deposit within 48 hours of the status changing to paid.

Wait, so if i have an interview soon, i shouldnt assume im getting disqualified if they mention appeal paperwork?! My EDD interview is Monday and I've been freaking out assuming the worst...

Oh no, seriously?? That's exactly what I'm afraid of. Why did they disqualify you after already paying? Was it also for unreported wages?

I've been having the most frustrating time trying to get through to EDD for my eligibility interview - they rescheduled mine TWICE and now I can't even get anyone on the phone to find out when the new one is! I found this service called Claimyr that actually helped me get through to a live EDD rep after weeks of trying. Their system basically holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Worked way better than spending all day hitting redial. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km or check out their website at claimyr.com. Back to your situation though - the fact your payments went to paid is definitely a good sign! The paperwork they mentioned is probably just the formal determination letter that explains their decision.

Thanks! I was lucky they actually called right on time for my interview. Hoping this means everything is resolved, but I'll definitely keep that service in mind if I need to reach them again.

EDD IS A JOKE!!!!! They did the same thing to me but then FROZE my card two days later for "verification" and I couldnt get the money for another 2 WEEKS!!!!! The left hand has NO IDEA what the right hand is doing there. Just because it says paid doesnt mean youll get it right away trust me.

Oh great, one more thing to worry about! Was there something specific that triggered the card freeze or does it happen randomly?

They said it was "routine security" but of COURSE it happens right when a large payment posts. Convenient for them to hold OUR MONEY!!!!

To clarify on some of the responses here - when unreported wages are found to be an honest mistake rather than willful fraud, EDD typically won't issue an overpayment or disqualification, especially for smaller amounts like you mentioned. The interviewer was required to tell you about appeal rights because that's standard procedure for ALL determinations, even favorable ones. The Notice of Determination you'll receive will include language about appeal rights regardless of whether they ruled in your favor or not. This is because all EDD determinations, positive or negative, can be appealed (though obviously you wouldn't appeal a favorable decision). The payment status changing to PAID is the system implementation of their decision, which is clearly in your favor. While there are occasional system glitches, this sequence of events strongly indicates a positive outcome for your claim.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! The money actually hit my card this morning. I feel like I can finally breathe again. Will definitely report any tiny bit of income going forward - lesson learned!

That's awesome news that your money came through! @Kennedy Morrison I m'going through something similar - had my interview last week about some freelance work I forgot to report and I ve'been a nervous wreck waiting for the decision. Your post gives me hope that maybe the stern interviewer tone doesn t'automatically mean bad news. Did you end up getting that determination letter in the mail yet?

@Fatima Al-Farsi Yes, I got the determination letter about a week later and it confirmed they found in my favor! The letter basically said they determined it was an unintentional error rather than willful misrepresentation. Try not to stress too much - if your situation is similar small (amount, honest mistake, you were upfront about it ,)you ll'probably be fine. The interviewers really do have to maintain that serious tone regardless of how they re'leaning. Good luck with your decision!

Congratulations on getting your payments! I went through a similar situation last year with unreported DoorDash earnings from 2022 that I completely forgot about (only like $1,800). The interviewer was ice cold and made me feel like a criminal, but my payments also switched to PAID right after the call. Got my money within 2 days and the determination letter a week later confirming they ruled it was an honest oversight. The key thing EDD looks for is whether you were trying to hide income deliberately vs. just making a mistake. Since you were honest about it during the interview and the amount was relatively small, they likely saw it as the latter. Definitely keep reporting everything going forward - even if it's just $50 from a random gig. Better safe than sorry with EDD!

This is so reassuring to hear! I'm actually dealing with a similar situation right now - I have my eligibility interview scheduled for next week about some Uber driving income I forgot to report from early 2023 (around $1,200 total). I've been losing sleep over it because I keep reading horror stories online about people getting huge overpayment bills. Your experience and @Kennedy Morrison s'really help calm my nerves. Did you have to provide any documentation during your interview, or did they just ask you questions about the unreported income? I m'trying to prepare as much as possible so I don t'fumble through it like I m'hiding something when I m'really not.
