EDD Notice of Compilation Letter - does this mean my claim is approved? When will I get my debit card?

I finally got a 'letter of compilation' from EDD yesterday after waiting FOREVER (5 weeks) since filing my claim. I've never been on unemployment before so I'm confused - does this letter mean my claim is approved? The letter has all my wage information from the last 18 months and says something about my maximum benefit amount being $12,670 but doesn't clearly state if I'm approved or not?? Also, if this does mean I'm approved, when should I expect to get the Money Network debit card? Do they mail it automatically or do I need to request it somewhere on UI Online? I've been checking my UI Online account daily but nothing has changed there. I'm really getting desperate as I was laid off from my healthcare admin job and rent is due next week. Any help appreciated!

You mean a Notice of COMPUTATION (not compilation). That letter just shows how your benefit amount was calculated based on previous wages. It doesn't mean you're approved yet. You still need to wait for an Award Letter which specifically states you're eligible. Sometimes they come close together though! As for the debit card, they'll mail it automatically once your first payment is processed, usually within 7-10 business days after your first certification is approved. Are you certifying for benefits yet? If not, that's your next step. I recommend checking your UI Online homepage daily to see if you have any new certifications available or messages in your inbox. Sometimes the online status updates before you get anything in the mail.

Omg you're right, it says COMPUTATION. I feel so dumb now. 🤦‍♀️ I've never seen that word before and misread it completely. I haven't been able to certify yet. There's no option for that in my account. Does that mean I'm still not approved? The letter arrived 3 days ago.

The Notice of Computation letter is standard and automatically generated - it shows your potential benefit amount IF your claim is approved. It's not the same as approval. Here's what to look for: 1. An Award Letter - this specifically states you're eligible 2. Certification weeks appearing in your UI Online account 3. A message that says "You have a new certification to complete" If you don't see certification weeks available within 10 days of getting the Notice of Computation, you might have an issue with your claim that needs addressing. At that point, you should try to contact EDD directly.

Thanks for explaining! So far I don't have any certification weeks showing up. This is so stressful - I wish they'd make the process clearer for first-timers.

ive been through this before so dont panic!! the computation letter is just step 1, its almost like a receipt that says "we got your application and here's what u might get" but ur not approved yet. you'll know ur approved when u can certify btw the debit card comes from a company called Money Network not directly from EDD (confused the heck outta me first time!) so watch for that in ur mail. they send it automatically once u get ur first payment processed

Thanks! That's good to know about the Money Network card - I probably would have been suspicious of mail from a company I didn't recognize.

Don't mean to hijack but has anyone else noticed they're taking FOREVER to process new claims in 2025?? My cousin filed in January and didn't get approved until March! The system is totally broken right now.

YES!! The EDD system is absolute garbage right now! I filed my claim 7 weeks ago and I'm still pending with no explanation. I called 47 times yesterday and couldn't get through to anyone. My rent is late and my landlord is threatening eviction. I'm about to lose my mind!!!

Now I'm getting worried! I can't wait 2+ months for approval. 😰

To directly answer your question: No, the Notice of Computation is not an approval. It's an informational document calculating your potential benefit amount based on your reported wages. Typical EDD claim progression in 2025: 1. File claim 2. Receive Notice of Computation (usually 1-2 weeks after filing) 3. Complete ID.me verification if requested (check your UI Online inbox) 4. Receive Award Letter indicating approval (2-4 weeks after filing if no issues) 5. Certification weeks appear in UI Online 6. Complete certifications 7. Payment issued after successful certification 8. Money Network debit card mailed automatically after first payment (7-10 business days) If you've had the Computation letter for more than 10 days with no ability to certify, there might be a pending eligibility issue. You should contact EDD directly.

Thank you for this detailed timeline! This is exactly what I needed to understand where I am in the process. I did complete ID.me verification right when I applied, but I still don't have certification weeks showing up. I guess I need to try calling them.

Also, just to clarify because I see some confusion in other posts - you DON'T need to request the Money Network debit card. It's sent automatically once your first payment is processed. But if you want direct deposit instead (which is faster), you need to set that up in your UI Online account under "Payment Methods." Many people don't realize you can choose direct deposit and just wait for the card by default.

Oh! I would definitely prefer direct deposit. I'll look for that setting in my account right now. Thank you!

I got that notice back in February and it took another 3 WEEKS before I could certify!!! Then another week before I actually got paid! The EDD is a complete nightmare right now. Keep checking your UI Online account daily - that's where you'll see when you can certify. The paper notifications are ALWAYS delayed.

to answer ur other question, my debit card came like 10 days after my first payment hit. but i think direct deposit is better if u already have a bank account setup

Quick update question - have you checked if you have any pending tasks or messages in your UI Online inbox? Sometimes there are additional verification steps they need before they can fully process your claim. If there's nothing there and it's been more than 10 days since your Notice of Computation letter, calling is your best option.

I checked my inbox and don't see anything pending. I tried calling today but couldn't get through - just the automated message saying they're experiencing high call volume and to try again later. I'll keep trying tomorrow morning.

Try calling right when they open at 8:00am. That's usually the best time to get through. Or consider using a service like Claimyr that can connect you. Best $20 I ever spent after wasting days trying to get through the regular way.

I want to emphasize something important: The Notice of Computation is automatically generated based on your wage information. It doesn't mean a human has reviewed your claim yet. Common reasons for delays between the Computation letter and certification availability: 1. Employer verification is pending (they have 10 days to respond) 2. Your separation reason requires additional review (especially if you didn't select "laid off") 3. Identity verification issues 4. Previous claim history that needs reconciliation 5. Quarterly wage review periods (end of March can cause delays) Unfortunately, the only way to get specific information about your claim status is to speak with an EDD representative directly. Keep trying the phone lines or consider using a connection service if you're unable to get through after several attempts.

I did select "laid off" as my reason, and I completed ID verification, so maybe it's the employer verification that's holding things up. I worked for a large healthcare system so maybe they're slow to respond? I'll definitely need to talk to a rep to find out.

Hey Diego! I went through this exact same situation last year when I was laid off from my job at Kaiser. Large healthcare systems can definitely be slow with their employer verification responses - they have up to 10 business days to respond to EDD's inquiry, and some take the full time. Since you mentioned rent is due next week, here are a few immediate suggestions: 1. Contact your landlord ASAP to explain the situation - many are understanding about EDD delays if you communicate proactively 2. Look into local emergency rental assistance programs in your area - many counties have funds specifically for people waiting on unemployment 3. Check if your former employer has any emergency hardship funds available for laid-off employees For the EDD situation, keep trying to call first thing in the morning (8 AM sharp). If you can't get through by early next week, consider using Claimyr or similar services - the $20-30 fee is worth it when you're facing eviction. The good news is that once your claim does get approved, you'll get backpay for all the weeks you've been eligible, so hang in there! The system is definitely overwhelmed right now but your claim will eventually process.

Thank you so much for the practical advice, Mei! I hadn't thought about contacting my landlord proactively - that's a really good point. I'll definitely reach out to them today to explain the situation. I'll also look into those emergency rental assistance programs you mentioned. Do you happen to know if there's a specific website or number I should start with for finding local programs in my area? And yes, I worked for a large health system too, so it sounds like the employer verification delay is probably what's happening. It's frustrating but at least now I have a better understanding of what might be causing the holdup. I'm going to try calling EDD at exactly 8 AM tomorrow and if I can't get through by Monday, I'll look into Claimyr. Thank you again for the encouragement - it really helps to hear from someone who went through the same thing!

Hey Diego! I see you're getting some great advice here. Just wanted to add that for emergency rental assistance programs, you can start with 211.org - just enter your zip code and it'll show local programs. Also try searching "[your county name] emergency rental assistance" - most counties have COVID relief funds that are still active. One more tip: if you do get through to EDD and they say your employer hasn't responded yet, ask them to send a "second request" to your employer. Sometimes that speeds things up. Also ask for the specific timeline - they should be able to tell you exactly when the 10-day employer response period expires. The waiting is absolutely brutal but you're doing everything right. Keep checking UI Online daily and definitely try that 8 AM call strategy!
