EDD Money Network debit card taking forever to arrive - approved for 3 weeks already

I finally got approved for unemployment benefits after the most stressful month of my life (layoff from tech company with zero warning). My UI Online account shows I've been approved and I've already certified for 3 weeks successfully - it shows the payments as "paid" in the portal. But I still haven't received the stupid Money Network debit card in the mail! How long is this supposed to take? I got a letter about a week ago saying I didn't need to do anything to get the card, and that if I wanted paper checks instead I should send the form back. I didn't send it back since I want the card, but now I'm getting anxious. My rent is due next week and I NEED this money. I don't see any option in UI Online to switch to direct deposit either. Is that even possible? Anyone know the typical timeline for when the card should arrive after being approved?

I didn't know I could call Money Network directly! Do you have their number? I've only been trying EDD and getting nowhere.

The Money Network debit card typically takes 7-10 business days to arrive after your first payment is processed. Since you've already certified for three weeks and they show as "paid," your card should be on the way. If you need to check the status, call the Money Network customer service at 1-866-692-9374. They can tell you if the card has been mailed and when. They can also expedite a replacement if needed (though there might be a fee). Regarding direct deposit - yes, it's possible, but only AFTER you receive your card. You'll need to set up a transfer from your Money Network account to your personal bank account. The option to set up transfers becomes available once you activate the card and create your Money Network online account. Don't worry too much yet if it's only been about a week since your approval letter. The system works, just slowly!

Thank you SO MUCH for this clear explanation! That's a relief to hear. I'll give it a few more days before I start panicking. I had no idea I needed the physical card first before setting up direct deposit - that makes sense why I couldn't find the option anywhere.

they sent mine to the wrong adress lol had to wait a whole extra month to get my $$$. make sure ur address is correct in the system!!!

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! I double checked my address in UI Online and it looks correct. Hopefully they didn't mess it up on their end.

After you get the card, you can set up automatic transfers to your bank account. That's what I did. Every time EDD deposits money on the card, it automatically transfers to my checking account within 1-2 days. Much better than having to manually transfer funds each time. But yes, unfortunately there's a bit of a waiting period for that first card. If it's been more than 10 business days since your first payment was processed (not just approved, but showing as paid), I'd definitely call Money Network to check on the status.

That automatic transfer option sounds perfect. I'll definitely set that up once I get the card. It's been about 8 business days since my first payment showed as paid, so I guess I need to be a bit more patient.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!!! I had to wait FOUR WEEKS for my card back in January and by then I was already behind on bills and got hit with late fees. Then when the card FINALLY arrived, my account was locked for "verification" purposes and took ANOTHER WEEK to get fixed. Meanwhile the rent is due and EDD doesn't care AT ALL!!!!! The funniest part is they expect us to certify every two weeks EXACTLY on time but they can take their sweet time sending OUR MONEY. Absolute garbage system.

I feel your frustration! The whole system definitely needs a redesign. But in all fairness, the Money Network cards are actually handled by a separate company that partners with EDD, not by EDD themselves. That's why there's often a disconnect between payment approval and card delivery. Still a pain though!

Have you tried checking your mail delivery status through USPS informed delivery? You can sign up free and see images of mail that's coming to you each day. Might give you peace of mind to see if the card envelope is on its way.

That's a great idea! I've heard of informed delivery but never signed up. Going to do that right now, thanks!

If you're really in a bind with rent coming due, you might want to try reaching EDD directly to see if there are any options to expedite the card or process. I was in a similar situation last year and was able to get help once I actually spoke with a representative. I had ZERO luck getting through on the regular lines, but I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD rep within about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep I spoke with was able to verify my card had been mailed and gave me better info than the generic "7-10 business days" everyone quotes. In some cases they can even help expedite if there's a genuine hardship.

I've been trying to call for days with no luck! I'll check out that service - at this point I'm desperate enough to try anything that might help me talk to an actual human at EDD. Thanks for the tip!

does that thing actually work? i spent like 3 hours yesterday hitting redial and never got thru

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me! The system basically keeps dialing for you until it gets through, then calls you back when it has an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration.

Just a heads-up: when the card does arrive, activate it immediately and set up your online account with Money Network right away. The card will arrive in a very plain envelope that could easily be mistaken for junk mail - it won't say "EDD" or anything obvious on the outside (for security reasons). Also, once you have the card, you can call Money Network and request that future replacements be expedited to you in 3-5 business days instead of the standard delivery time. This is really helpful if your card ever gets lost or damaged.

Thank you! I'll keep an eye out for plain-looking envelopes. That's really good to know about being able to request expedited replacement for the future too.

wait i think ur confused bout something. theres no such thing as "UI debit card" - its called the Money Network debit card or EDD debit card. UI just means unemployment insurance, its not the name of the card. just makin sure ur looking for the right thing lol

0 coins

Oh you're right! I was mixing up the terms. I meant the Money Network debit card for my UI benefits. Thanks for catching that!

To be fair, everybody calls it something different. EDD card, UI card, Money Network card, prepaid debit card... The official name is the "EDD Debit Card issued by Money Network" which is quite a mouthful lol

Update from the original poster? Did your card arrive yet? The suggested 10 business days should be about up by now.

IT FINALLY CAME TODAY! Plain white envelope just like someone mentioned. So relieved! I'm activating it right now and setting up that automatic transfer to my checking account. Thanks everyone for your help and keeping me sane during the wait!

That's awesome news! So glad it worked out for you. The waiting is always the worst part, but sounds like it came right within that typical timeframe everyone mentioned. Hope the automatic transfer setup goes smoothly too - that'll make future payments so much easier to manage!

Congrats Faith! That's such great news that it finally arrived. For anyone else still waiting - this is a perfect example of how the timeline really is about 10 business days like others mentioned. I know the waiting is stressful when you need the money, but the system does work. One tip for the automatic transfer setup: make sure to test it with a small amount first before setting up the full auto-transfer. I learned that the hard way when my first transfer got delayed due to a bank holiday and I was scrambling to figure out where my money went!

That's a really smart tip about testing with a small amount first! I never would have thought of that. I'm going to transfer like $20 first to make sure everything works before I set up the automatic transfers for the full amounts. Better safe than sorry, especially after all this waiting!

Wow, what a relief that your card finally arrived Faith! This thread is such a great resource for anyone going through the same stress. I went through this exact situation about 6 months ago and I remember checking my mailbox obsessively every single day. The plain envelope thing is so true - I almost threw mine away thinking it was junk mail! For future reference for anyone reading this, I also want to mention that if you ever need to dispute a charge on the Money Network card or have issues with ATM fees, their customer service is actually pretty responsive compared to EDD. They have 24/7 support and I've never had trouble getting through to them. Just keep that number handy: 1-866-692-9374. The automatic transfer feature has been a lifesaver for me. Once you set it up, you basically forget about the whole EDD card system and just get your money deposited like a normal paycheck. Makes the whole unemployment process feel a little less degrading, if that makes sense.

Thanks for sharing your experience Darren! That's so reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing. I can totally relate to the obsessive mailbox checking - I was doing that multiple times a day! And you're absolutely right about it feeling less degrading once you get the automatic transfers set up. It's like getting back some sense of normalcy. I'm definitely saving that Money Network customer service number too, just in case. This whole thread has been incredibly helpful for navigating this confusing system.
