EDD payment timeline after certifying - already have Money Network card but waiting for funds

I just certified for my first weeks of unemployment benefits on Sunday (April 23, 2025). My situation is a bit weird - I actually applied for benefits last year but never certified because my hours increased right after getting approved. Now I'm laid off completely and EDD told me over the phone they're putting my new claim 'on the back' of my old claim (whatever that means?). The good news is I already received and activated my Money Network card last week (they must have kept my old info on file). But I'm wondering how long it typically takes for funds to actually appear on the card after certification? Is it a standard 48-hour wait or should I be expecting some delay since my claim situation is unusual? Really need to budget for upcoming bills.

For regular UI claims with Money Network cards that are already activated, payments usually post within 24-48 hours after certification shows as 'paid' in your UI Online account. However, if your claim is being processed as a reopened claim or has special circumstances, it could take a bit longer - maybe 3-5 days. I'd recommend checking your UI Online homepage to see if your certification status has changed from 'pending' to 'paid' yet. That's the first indicator that money will be coming to your card soon.

Thanks for the info. Just checked UI Online and it still shows 'pending' so I guess that's why nothing has hit my card yet. Does anyone know how long pending status typically lasts for reopened claims?

mine took 72 hrs once the status changed to PAID. check ur account in the morning, status usually updates overnight!

This isn't entirely accurate. EDD batch processing happens at different times, not just overnight. I've seen status changes happen mid-day plenty of times. But the 72-hour timeframe is generally correct once it shows PAID status.

When I had to reopen my claim last fall, it took about 5 days for my certification to change from pending to paid. Something about them having to manually review it since it was a reopened claim. The Money Network card got the funds about 24 hours after the status changed to PAID. Be patient but keep checking your UI Online account!

I HAD THE SAME ISSUE!! My reopened claim took FOREVER to process. They put a stop payment on it for 'eligibility review' and I had to call them like 20 times before I finally got through. EDD is such a nightmare to deal with sometimes!

The timeline depends on a few factors with reopened claims: 1. If there are no eligibility issues, payment typically processes within 48-72 hours after certification 2. If your claim requires manual review (common with reopened claims), it can take 5-7 days 3. If there's an eligibility interview required, it could be 1-3 weeks Since you mentioned they're attaching it to your previous claim, there's a good chance they'll need to manually review it first. I recommend watching your UI Online account for status changes and checking your claim history page daily.

It's been 5 days now and still showing pending. I've tried calling but can't get through to an agent. Is there some secret to reaching someone at EDD? This is getting stressful since I need to pay rent soon.

If you need to reach EDD, I had amazing luck with Claimyr.com after spending days trying to get through the regular way. They basically connect you directly to an EDD agent without you having to call hundreds of times. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km In my case, I had a pending payment for over a week, called using their service, and the agent was able to push my payment through while I was on the phone. Status changed from pending to paid within minutes.

Thank you! I'll check this out right now. At this point I'll try anything to get this resolved before rent is due.

Let me clarify a few things about reopened claims and payments: When EDD says they're putting your new claim "on the back" of an existing claim, they mean they're reopening your previous claim period rather than starting a completely new benefit year. This usually happens when your previous claim still has an unexpired benefit year. For reopened claims, the system often flags them for a quick eligibility review, which can add 3-7 days to processing time. This isn't the same as a formal eligibility interview - just an internal review to ensure your circumstances still qualify. Regarding Money Network card payments: Once your certification shows as PAID in the system, funds are typically available within 24-48 hours. The card itself is processed through a separate system than the EDD claim processing system. If you're still showing PENDING after 7 days, I strongly recommend speaking with an agent as there may be a simple issue they can resolve immediately.

This is really helpful, thank you. I finally got through to EDD (used that Claimyr service someone mentioned) and they told me there was an identity verification flag that needed clearing. The agent removed it while I was on the phone, and my status changed to paid about an hour after the call ended. Money showed up on my card the next morning!

Dealing with the EDD is SO frustrating. Last time I certified it took 12 days to get paid! They said something about 'quarterly wage review' whatever that means. The system is designed to make us suffer I swear.

Quarterly wage reviews happen when your certification period crosses into a new quarter of the year. The system automatically checks if you earned wages in the new quarter that might affect your benefit amount. It's not designed to make you suffer - it's just an automated process that sometimes creates delays.

UPDATE: Funds hit my Money Network card this morning! For anyone dealing with a similar situation, here's my timeline: - Sunday: Certified for benefits - Days 1-5: Status remained pending - Day 6: Called EDD using Claimyr (actually got through!) - Day 6 (1 hour after call): Status changed to PAID - Day 7: Money available on card The agent said the delay was due to my claim being reopened after a long period of inactivity. They had to verify my identity again even though I'd already done it previously. Once that was cleared, everything processed quickly. Thanks everyone for your help!

Congrats! This gives me hope cause I'm on day 4 of pending myself. Did the money show up as one lump sum for all the weeks?
