EDD appeal hearing delay - 5 months without court date?

I filed an appeal with EDD back in November 2024 after being disqualified for benefits (they claimed I quit voluntarily when I was actually laid off from my warehouse job). It's now April 2025 and I STILL haven't received any notice about a court date. I've tried calling EDD multiple times but can never get through to a real person. The appeal confirmation letter said I'd be notified within 6-8 weeks. Is a 5+ month wait normal? Has anyone else experienced this kind of delay for an appeal hearing? I'm seriously struggling financially and don't know what else to do at this point.

I remember when I had to wait for my disability hearing (not unemployment but similar system) and I was going crazy checking the mail every day!! Just hang in there you'll get through this!!!

I wanted to follow up with one more important point - while you're waiting for your appeal hearing, make sure you're meeting the ongoing work search requirements. Document all your job search activities thoroughly, because if you win your appeal, you'll need to show you were actively looking for work during all those weeks. This is especially important since your disqualification was related to job separation. The judge will want to see that you've been making consistent efforts to find new employment while your appeal was pending.

I've been keeping track of all my applications in a spreadsheet, so I should be covered there. I've applied to about 15-20 jobs each month. I hope that's enough to satisfy the work search requirement. This whole situation is just so stressful.

Will quitting a 4-hour part-time job disqualify my EDD claim after seasonal work ended?

Hi everyone, I'm in a bit of a panic about my friend's unemployment eligibility. She worked a seasonal full-time landscaping job for 9 months that ended in January (not her fault, just seasonal). After that ended, she picked up this tiny part-time job at a specialty bakery that was only 4 hours per week paying about $80. The bakery was a 45-minute drive each way, and with gas prices being what they are, she was basically breaking even or losing money. After 3 weeks, she quit because it just wasn't financially viable. Now she's filing for unemployment based on her previous seasonal job, but I'm worried EDD might disqualify her for voluntarily quitting the part-time bakery job. Does anyone know if quitting a super minimal part-time job (that came AFTER her main job ended) will mess up her entire claim? She really needs the unemployment benefits while she looks for something full-time again. Any advice appreciated!

my sister went thru exactly this!!! she had a main retail job that cut all her hours and then quit a 8hr/week second job because the schedule kept changing and she couldnt plan anything. she got approved because she had GOOD CAUSE for quitting. tell your friend to use those exact words - "good cause" - in her application and interview!!!! that's the magic phrase EDD looks for!!

One more thing to note: the EDD will be most interested in the job that constitutes the majority of your friend's base period earnings (the seasonal job). If that job ended through no fault of her own (layoff, contract end, etc.), and the part-time job represented only a small fraction of her total earnings, the part-time job is less likely to affect her overall eligibility - especially with a solid good cause explanation for quitting. During the eligibility interview, she should emphasize that she's actively seeking suitable full-time work similar to her previous seasonal position, which demonstrates she's not trying to avoid working - she just couldn't continue with an arrangement that was costing her money.

That makes perfect sense! Her seasonal landscaping job paid around $3,800/month, while the bakery was only $320/month at most. So the part-time job was really minimal compared to her main job earnings. I'll make sure she emphasizes that she's actively looking for full-time work similar to the landscaping position.

EDD payment delay after certification - Money Network card not showing deposit

I certified for my UI benefits on Sunday morning at 7am like I always do, but it's now Tuesday evening and my payment still shows as 'pending' in UI Online. Normally the money hits my Money Network card by Monday afternoon at the latest. Has anyone else noticed delays this week? My rent is due Friday and I'm starting to get nervous. I checked my claim history and everything looks normal - no flags or messages about additional verification needed. Just says 'pending payment'. Is the system backed up or should I be worried?

This happened to me last month too, but it was because I answered one of the certification questions wrong. I said I was "too sick to work" on one day (had a terrible cold) and that triggered some kind of review flag. Maybe double check your certification answers if this keeps happening?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I double-checked my certification and everything looked normal. I said I was able and available to work all days, looked for work, and didn't refuse any work. Seems like it was just a system delay this time. But that's good to know about the sick day thing - I'll be careful about that in the future!

I've been on unemployment three times in the past five years and I've learned you should ALWAYS keep at least one month of expenses saved if possible, even while on UI. The payment system is just too unpredictable, especially around holidays, end of quarters, and system updates. Last December they had a two-week delay for thousands of people right before Christmas! If you can't get through on the phone, try the Contact EDD function in UI Online or visit an in-person office if there's one near you.

Must be nice to have "one month of expenses saved"... some of us are living paycheck to paycheck BECAUSE we lost our jobs. That's not helpful advice when you're already struggling.

EDD payment timeline after certifying - already have Money Network card but waiting for funds

I just certified for my first weeks of unemployment benefits on Sunday (April 23, 2025). My situation is a bit weird - I actually applied for benefits last year but never certified because my hours increased right after getting approved. Now I'm laid off completely and EDD told me over the phone they're putting my new claim 'on the back' of my old claim (whatever that means?). The good news is I already received and activated my Money Network card last week (they must have kept my old info on file). But I'm wondering how long it typically takes for funds to actually appear on the card after certification? Is it a standard 48-hour wait or should I be expecting some delay since my claim situation is unusual? Really need to budget for upcoming bills.

Dealing with the EDD is SO frustrating. Last time I certified it took 12 days to get paid! They said something about 'quarterly wage review' whatever that means. The system is designed to make us suffer I swear.

Quarterly wage reviews happen when your certification period crosses into a new quarter of the year. The system automatically checks if you earned wages in the new quarter that might affect your benefit amount. It's not designed to make you suffer - it's just an automated process that sometimes creates delays.

UPDATE: Funds hit my Money Network card this morning! For anyone dealing with a similar situation, here's my timeline: - Sunday: Certified for benefits - Days 1-5: Status remained pending - Day 6: Called EDD using Claimyr (actually got through!) - Day 6 (1 hour after call): Status changed to PAID - Day 7: Money available on card The agent said the delay was due to my claim being reopened after a long period of inactivity. They had to verify my identity again even though I'd already done it previously. Once that was cleared, everything processed quickly. Thanks everyone for your help!

Congrats! This gives me hope cause I'm on day 4 of pending myself. Did the money show up as one lump sum for all the weeks?

EDD partial benefits for drastic hour reduction - employer seems to be pushing me to quit?

I'm in a really stressful situation with my current employer and wondering if I can qualify for partial unemployment. I was hired to work 30 hours weekly (3 weekdays in office plus weekend events) but over the last 2 months my supervisor has been dramatically cutting my hours. When I text to ask about my schedule, I keep getting responses like "we don't need you this week" with no explanation. This week I have ZERO hours scheduled! I've been with this company for 15 months and feel like they're trying to force me to quit rather than lay me off. I do have another part-time job where I work 8-16 hours weekly, but that's not nearly enough to cover my bills. Can I apply for partial UI benefits due to reduced hours while still working my smaller part-time job? Has anyone successfully done this? I'm seriously panicking about making rent next month.

Just want to add - if your employer contests your claim (which often happens with these hour reduction situations), don't panic! You'll get a notice for a phone interview. Be prepared with all your documentation showing the pattern of reduction. Speak clearly about how many hours you originally worked vs. now. Don't say anything negative about the employer - stick strictly to the facts about hours. The determination usually favors the employee if you can show a clear pattern of reduction without misconduct on your part.

This is helpful to prepare for. I'm worried my employer might claim they offered me hours and I declined (which isn't true). Should I try to get them to put in writing why my hours are being cut before I apply?

hey just checking in - did u apply yet? hoping things work out for u!

Yes! I submitted my application yesterday. The online system wasn't too complicated but I got confused about how to list my current employment status. I selected "still employed with reduced hours" and provided all my work history. Now just waiting for the next steps. Thanks for checking in!
