EDD keeps scheduling eligibility interviews during my work hours - can't reschedule, will missing it affect my overpayment?

I'm in a really tough spot with EDD right now. They've scheduled my FOURTH eligibility interview since January 2025, and it's happening this Friday when I'm scheduled to work. I've tried calling multiple times to reschedule but can't get through to anyone. Even left a voicemail yesterday but no response. The problem is I HAVE to work this shift because I'm already dealing with an EDD overpayment determination of $4,700 from last quarter and need every penny I can earn. Does anyone know what happens if I miss this call? Will it automatically disqualify me or make my overpayment situation worse? I'm terrified of making a bad situation even worse, but I literally can't afford to miss work!

Missing an eligibility interview without rescheduling could definitely complicate things. EDD might disqualify your claim or delay any resolution on your overpayment situation. Keep trying to call them at exactly 8:00 AM when they open - that's when you have the best chance of getting through. You could also try sending a secure message through UI Online explaining your situation and requesting a reschedule. Document everything including your attempts to contact them.

Thanks for the advice. I've tried calling at 8:00 AM three times this week but always get the 'too many callers' message. I did send a UI Online message yesterday too but haven't heard back. Do you think I should try calling during my lunch break tomorrow? I only get 30 minutes though.

This same thing hapend to me last month!! They scheduled me during my shift and I couldn't answer. They just rescheduled me for the next week no big deal. But i didn't have an overpayment thing going on so maybe different for you???

That's somewhat reassuring! Did they send you a notice about the rescheduled interview automatically or did you have to request it?

I've been through this exact situation. Missing the interview won't automatically make your overpayment worse, but it will delay resolving any issues with your claim. The key is documentation. Here's what you should do: 1. Send another UI Online secure message TODAY explaining you can't make the interview due to work obligations and requesting a reschedule. Print this for your records. 2. If possible, have your employer write a brief note confirming your work schedule conflicts with the interview time. 3. During your lunch break tomorrow, try calling one more time. If you can't get through, at minimum leave another detailed voicemail explaining the situation. 4. If you end up missing the interview, immediately (same day) send another secure message acknowledging you missed it due to work and requesting a new appointment. This creates a paper trail showing you made good faith efforts to address the situation.

This is incredibly helpful - thank you! I'll definitely do all of that. My supervisor is pretty understanding so I think I can get a note from him. Do you think I should upload that note to my UI Online account as well?

you NEED to take that call!!! my friend missed her interview and her claim got disqualified for MONTHS and she had to appeal and everything. not worth it!!!

Have you tried using Claimyr? After weeks of not being able to reach EDD on my own, I finally used their service and got through to a rep in about 30 minutes. They basically call EDD for you and when they get through, they connect you with the agent. Saved me so much time and stress! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. It was worth it to finally talk to someone who could actually help with my interview scheduling issues.

I've never heard of this service before. Does it actually work? I'm desperate at this point so I might try it tomorrow if I still can't get through on my own.

i used it once and it worked but took like an hour not 30min. still better than calling all day tho

EDD is RIDICULOUS with these interview times!!! They KNOW most people are working during the day! Why not offer evening appointments?? I had this EXACT problem last month and ended up having to take unpaid time off work just to answer their call that lasted all of 10 minutes. The system is BROKEN and designed to make us fail. They're probably HOPING you miss it so they can deny your claim and keep their precious money. It's all a game to them while we struggle to pay bills.

Totally agree the system seems designed to trip people up. But just to clarify one thing - EDD does actually offer some late afternoon appointments now (up to 5:30pm I believe). Might be worth asking specifically for a late day slot when rescheduling.

Update on my earlier advice: I just remembered that if your interview is specifically about the overpayment determination, missing it could potentially result in EDD making a determination without your input. That could mean they go forward with the full overpayment amount without hearing your side. If you absolutely cannot miss work, at minimum, prepare a detailed written statement explaining your situation and submit it through UI Online before the interview time. Include any evidence you have that might support your case regarding the overpayment. This way, even if you miss the call, there's something on record from you.

Oh no, that's what I was afraid of. This interview is definitely related to the overpayment - the letter mentioned reviewing my "continued eligibility" after they determined I had been overpaid. I'll definitely prepare and submit a written statement with documentation tonight just in case. Thank you so much for this critical information!

If you decide to try Claimyr that the other person mentioned, I'd recommend doing it first thing tomorrow morning. That gives you the best chance of reaching someone who can help reschedule before Friday. When you get through, specifically ask for a Tier 2 specialist as they're the ones who can actually access the interview scheduling system.

That's great advice - thank you! I'll try using it tomorrow morning. If I can't get it rescheduled, do you think I should try to step away from work for the interview anyway? My boss might let me take 15-20 minutes if I explain how important it is.

If you absolutely can't get it rescheduled, yes - try to take those 15-20 minutes if possible. EDD eligibility interviews are usually quite brief if there are no complications. Just have all your information ready so you can answer questions quickly. The potential consequences of missing it could be much worse than stepping away briefly from work.

idk if anyone said this but you can also ask your boss if you can take a break during the interview time maybe? my boss let me sit in my car for my edd call last year

Just wanted to add my experience to help ease your mind. I missed an eligibility interview back in February because I was in the hospital (didn't even know about it until after). I called EDD as soon as I found out, explained the situation, and they rescheduled me without any penalties. The key was contacting them right away and having a legitimate reason. Working to pay back an overpayment is definitely a legitimate reason! Document all your call attempts and keep trying to reach them before the interview date. Best of luck!

Thank you for sharing your experience - it's really reassuring to hear that they were understanding in your situation. I'll definitely keep documenting everything and will call them immediately if I end up missing it.

I've been in a similar situation and here's what worked for me: Try calling EDD at exactly 8:01 AM (not 8:00) - sometimes there's a tiny window where the system isn't completely overloaded yet. Also, if you have a smartphone, try using the "redial" feature repeatedly while doing other things. I got through after about 200 redials one morning. Another tip - if you can't reschedule and absolutely have to take the call during work, prepare a one-page summary of your overpayment situation beforehand. Having all your dates, amounts, and explanations ready can cut the interview time down to under 10 minutes. I know it's stressful, but don't panic - EDD deals with scheduling conflicts all the time and most reps are understanding if you're proactive about communicating.

This is all really solid advice! I'm definitely going to try the 8:01 AM trick tomorrow - that makes total sense about the tiny window. And preparing that one-page summary is brilliant - I'll work on that tonight so I have all my dates and documentation organized. It's reassuring to hear that most reps are understanding about scheduling conflicts. I'm feeling a bit more hopeful that this can get resolved. Thank you for taking the time to share what worked for you!
