EDD phone interview scheduled but phone service being disconnected - any options?
So I'm in a really tough spot and not sure what to do. My fiancé has an eligibility interview scheduled with EDD for next Thursday, but our cell phone service is getting shut off tomorrow because we're behind on payments (ironically because we've been waiting on his unemployment benefits). Anyone know if there's a way to reschedule the interview or let EDD know about the phone situation? Can he call them before our service gets cut off to explain? Or will he automatically get disqualified if he misses the call? Really worried about this because we NEED this unemployment money to get back on our feet.

•Thanks for the reply. Yeah we're definitely worried about disqualification. We might be able to borrow my mom's phone, but would EDD even call a different number than what's in their system?

You have a few options here: 1. Call EDD right away (ideally today) and explain the situation. They may be able to reschedule the interview or note your account with an alternate phone number. The key is to be proactive before missing the interview. 2. Update your contact information in your UI Online account. You can change the phone number to a working number (friend/family) temporarily. Be sure to check if you can receive texts at the alternate number in case they send reminder messages. 3. If you can't get through to EDD by phone (which is unfortunately common), send a secure message through your UI Online account explaining the situation and requesting an alternate contact method or reschedule. 4. As a last resort, you could try going to an America's Job Center in person to see if they can help contact EDD on your behalf or provide resources. Missing the interview without notice could result in benefits being delayed or denied, so definitely try all options to communicate the issue beforehand.

•This is super helpful info, thank you! I didn't realize we could update the phone number in UI Online. I'll have him do that right now and put my mom's number in there temporarily. We'll also try calling today before our service gets cut off.

my interview got scheduled during my surgery last year and i totally missed it! i thought i was screwed but i was able to call them and explain the situation and they rescheduled me. just make sure you have a good reason and they might be understanding!

•This is only partially correct. Missing an eligibility interview without prior notice usually results in a temporary disqualification. While you can request a new interview, your benefits will be on hold until it's completed. The EDD sees scheduled interviews as mandatory appointments - it's much better to contact them BEFORE missing one rather than after. They're more accommodating about rescheduling than they are about reinstating after a missed appointment.

Been there!!! The whole system is RIGGED against people who are already struggling financially. How are you supposed to get through the unemployment process when you can't even keep basic services on??? It's a cruel joke. I had a similar issue last year and spent DAYS trying to reach someone at EDD to explain. Either busy signals or being put on hold for hours only to get disconnected. The system is BROKEN and they don't care about our real situations.

•I know right?? The irony of needing a working phone to get your unemployment but needing the unemployment to pay for your phone... 🤦♀️

I'm dealing with interviews right now too and I've learned that getting through to EDD is definitely the hardest part of this whole process. I finally had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's a service that basically waits on hold for you and calls you back when an EDD rep is available. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km I'd use it ASAP before your phone gets shut off to explain the situation and either update your number or reschedule the interview. Way better than risking disqualification.

•Thank you for this suggestion! I've never heard of Claimyr before but we're desperate at this point. Going to check out that video right now. If it can actually get us through to a real person that would be amazing.

To give you the most accurate information: EDD allows you to reschedule a phone interview ONE time for good cause. Financial hardship affecting your phone service would typically qualify as good cause. You need to contact them before the scheduled interview to request the change. Specifically in your case: 1. Call the EDD Interview Line at 1-800-300-5616 as soon as possible (before your service is cut) 2. When prompted, select the option for rescheduling an interview 3. Explain your situation clearly - that you'll have no phone service on the interview date 4. Request either an earlier interview date or provide an alternate contact number Alternatively, check your original interview notice letter - it may include instructions for rescheduling or an email/fax option for submitting the information they need. If you absolutely cannot reach them before your service is cut off, have your fiancé go to an EDD office in person as a last resort. The main thing is to be proactive rather than reactive in this situation.

•Thank you for the detailed information! I didn't know there was a specific Interview Line. We'll try calling that number today. Really appreciate the help.

Have you tried going to the library? They usually have phones you can use for free and also computers if you need to update your UI Online account. That's what I had to do when my phone broke right before my interview last year. The librarians were really nice about it too.

•That's actually a really good idea I hadn't thought of. There's a library about 20 minutes walk from us. Might be our backup plan if we can't get this resolved today. Thanks for the suggestion!

Just wondering, have you tried contacting your phone company to explain the situation? Sometimes they'll give you a grace period if you explain you're waiting on unemployment benefits. Worth a shot?

•We did try that actually. They would only give us a 3-day extension which doesn't get us to the interview date. But good suggestion though, might help someone else in a similar situation.

Quick update check - were you able to contact EDD or update the phone number in UI Online? The sooner you address this, the better your chances of avoiding benefit interruption.

•We updated the phone number in UI Online to my mom's cell number, and we're trying to call them now but keep getting the dreaded "we're experiencing higher than normal call volume" message. Going to try that Claimyr service someone mentioned above as our last resort before our phones get shut off. I'll update when/if we get through!

UPDATE: We got through using Claimyr! The EDD rep was actually really understanding about our situation. They noted our account with my mom's phone number and confirmed they'll call that number for the interview. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions.

•Great to hear! Make sure your fiancé has all his employment documents and information ready for the interview - previous employer contact info, last day worked, reason for separation, etc. Being prepared will help the interview go smoothly.
